"Victoria," "Parnassus" Win Costume Awards

(CBS)  Monarchs and mystics were celebrated last night as the Costume Designer Guild bestowed its film and television awards.

Veteran designer Sandy Powell received the prize for excellence in period film for her work in "The Young Victoria," in which Emily Blunt portrayed the English queen.

Other films up in the category included "Coco Before Chanel," "Julie & Julia," "Nine" and "Sherlock Holmes."

Powell, a two-time Academy Award-winner (for "Shakespeare in Love" and "The Aviator") was also presented with the guild's Lacoste Career Achievement in Film Award.

In the fantasy category, Monique Prudhomme beat out "Avatar' and "Star Trek," winning for her costumes for Terry Gilliam's "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus," starring Christopher Plummer as an immortal mystic.

Prudhomme and Powell are both nominated for Academy Awards as well this year.

Doug Hall received the Guild's award in the contemporary film category for the musical drama "Crazy Heart." It topped "(500) Days of Summer," "Bruno," "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire" and "Up in the Air."

In the television categories, the designers smiled on "Glee," whose Lou Eyrich won for Outstanding Contemporary Series. "Mad Men"'s Janie Bryant took honors for Outstanding Period/Fantasy Series.

Catherine Marie Thomas received the award for outstanding made-for-TV movie for "Grey Gardens."

Casey Storm was awarded the prize in commercial costume design for the milk commercial "Milkquarious."

Also receiving honorary awards were the director of "Nine," Rob Marshall (the Distinguished Collaborator Award), and designer Michael Travis (Career Achievement in Television Award).

The late designer Robert Turturice was inducted into the guild's Hall of Fame.

The 12th annual Costume Designers Guild Awards were presented Thursday night at the Beverly Hilton.
