Young Voters Cooling towards Democrats

(AP)  Whither the youth vote? A year after backing Barack Obama by an overwhelming 2-to-1 ratio, young adults are quickly cooling toward Democrats amid dissatisfaction over the lack of change in Washington and an escalating war in Afghanistan.

A study by the Pew Research Center, being released Wednesday, highlights the eroding support from 18-to-29 year olds whose strong turnout in November 2008 was touted by some demographers as the start of a new Democratic movement.

The findings are significant because they offer further proof that the diverse coalition of voters Obama cobbled together in 2008 - including high numbers of first-timers, minorities and youths - are not Democratic Party voters who can necessarily be counted on.

While young adults remain decidedly more liberal, the survey found the Democratic advantage among 18-to-29 year olds has substantially narrowed - from a record 62 percent identifying as Democrat vs. 30 percent for the GOP in 2008, down to 54 percent vs. 40 percent last December. It was the largest percentage point jump in those who identified or leaned Republican among all the voting age groups.

Young adults' voting enthusiasm also crumbled.

During the presidential election, turnout among 18-to-29 year olds was the highest in years, making up roughly 20 percent of the voters in many states including Virginia and New Jersey, due in part to high participation from young blacks and Hispanics.

That percentage, however, dropped by half for the gubernatorial races in those states last November where Republicans celebrated wins as black groups pushed Obama to do more to soften the economic blow from mortgage foreclosures and Latinos saw little progress on immigration reform. Young adults were also the least likely of any age group to identify themselves as regular voters.

"This is a generation of young adults who made a big splash politically in 2008," said Paul Taylor, executive vice president of the Pew Research Center and co-author of the report. "But a year and a half later, they show signs of disillusionment with the president - and, perhaps, with politics itself."

Democrats saw evidence of this last November, when Republicans toppled Democrats from power in governor's races in New Jersey and Virginia. Young, minority and new voters who Obama pulled into the fold in 2008 didn't turn out at the same levels for the two Democratic candidates. The same thing happened in the Massachusetts Senate race last month.

The lesson: Neither party has a hold on 18-to-29 year olds. They tend to vote far less than other age groups, yet they have proven to be a powerful constituency if they are persuaded to vote. And that means the race is on by both Republicans and Democrats to make inroads into the next generation of voters.

Analysts say the findings reflect the fast pace at which young voters live their lives, and both parties should take note of their fickleness.

"If you don't respond to their needs, hopes or dreams quickly, they're gone," said Matthew Dowd, an independent political analyst who was a strategist in former President George W. Bush's 2004 re-election campaign. "They'll leave the playing field or switch their allegiance."

"They haven't become Republicans and they aren't solid Democrats. They're just looking for leaders who are where they are and will deliver," Dowd said. "Both parties have to be cognizant of the volatility of that group."

According to the Pew survey, large numbers of young adults said they personally liked the president but were dissatisfied with his rate of progress in changing Washington, such as improving the economy and fixing health care. Just 46 percent of 18-to-29 year olds said they believed Obama had changed Washington, compared to 48 percent who said he had not. Only baby boomers were more cynical, with 52 percent saying Obama had not changed the way things work in Washington.

The young adults also were the only age group in which more disapproved than approved of Obama's handling of the war in Afghanistan. Only 34 percent supported his decision in December to send an additional 30,000 U.S. troops to the region, while 50 percent disapproved.

Still, when asked why Obama hadn't done more to bring change, young adults were somewhat forgiving, with about 56 percent blaming the president's opponents and special interests; only 30 percent said Obama was the one at fault for not trying hard enough.

The findings are part of Pew's broad portrait of the so-called millennial generation, the children of baby boomers who came of age in the new millennium. Demographers believe this generation can reshape U.S. culture and politics because of their demographic size and political outlook.

Making up nearly one-fourth of U.S. voters, 18-to-29 year olds are less religious, more racially diverse and liberal on social issues such as gay rights. They are steeped in digital technology and social media, and are strong believers in the view that the government should do more to solve problems.

For example:

Nearly two-thirds admit to texting while driving, and more than 8 in 10 sleep with their cell phones by their bed.

Nearly 4 in 10 have at least one tattoo; about half of those people have two to five tattoos. Roughly 1 in 4 have a body piercing in a place other than an earlobe - six times the share of older adults.

About 37 percent of young adults are unemployed or out of the workforce, the highest share among this age group in more than three decades. A record share - 39.6 percent - was enrolled in college, and one in 8 millennials ages 22 and older say they had "boomeranged" back into their parents' home because of the recession.

The Pew survey is based on interviews with 2,020 adults by cell phone or landline from Jan. 14 to 27. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points for all respondents, higher for subgroups.

nobody has dental or vision insurance anymore you idiot.....so why were you surprised ? secondly, were you an owner or board member of that corporation, so you knew what their debts and liabilities are ? it was really none of your business what profit margin they made, unless you were responsible for making that profit.....you are an example of someone who sticks their nose where it doesn't belong, without a clue what you are looking at, because you are ignorant.

The price of gas at the pump is determined by speculators, not Big Oil...and since we buy all/most of our oil from OPEC, as them to lower the price.

Maybe if you had a JOB - as I do - you would HAVE vision and dental benefits - as I do.

It's amazing that you take the view, "Well, they took away my benefits, but it's for THEIR pure profit and outrageous bonuses, so I'm okay with it."

As an employee of that company that EARNED that company money, AND as a SHAREHOLDER that bought stock in the company, it ABSOLUTELY was my F'ing business!!!!

And the price of a BARREL OF OIL is determined by speculators - the price at the pump is determined by the refiners and tanker delivery trucks, which are almost ALWAYS owned by the big oil companies. Exxon-Mobil, BP, Sunoco, Valero, etc, etc -- they ALL refine the gas and deliver it to the pumps themselves. And $30 BILLION in ONE QUARTER, for ONE COMPANY is outrageous and should be illegal, when they are responsible for choking our economy.

Well if you weren't acting so intentionally ignorant, you would realize that "non-profit corporations" aren't going to buy politicians or elections, since they wouldn't have the money to buy them with, NOR would they have any obnoxious profits to protect -- now would they?

Really man - don't count on Beck and Limbaugh to think for you ALL the time -- THINK at least one or twice a day for yourself.

If you are all so concerned about corruption in Congress, look at the leadership of the Dems under ethics investigation; Dodd (oh yes he was absolved and told not to do it anymore), Frank, Waters, Murtha (he escaped), Rangel. Maybe the millenial generation should wake up look at their pay checks and see how much money is going to taxes created by these corrupt Dems and see what is done with it. Who do they think can spend their money better, the corrupt Dems or them?

It is painfully obvious, that you have neither operated a business/corporation or worked for one, since you don't really have a clue about what they are interested in......but somehow, you know what all the thousands and thousands of corporations have as their interest....do non-profit corporations only care about money ? see, you don't think..(i mean can't)

I worked for three different companies, and I know EXACTLY what they are interested in: MONEY.

I saw my last place post an 18% profit - that's AFTER expenses. Their profits were in the TENS OF MILLIONS of dollars. (It was a multi-million dollar nationwide warehouse operation.) Two weeks later they eliminated our dental and vision benefits. Why? Greed.

Every year, 45,000 Americans DIE from a lack of health insurance. 60% of the population files for bankruptcy BECAUSE of unforeseen / catastrophic health care emergencies. Why? Greed.

The big oil companies were posting RECORD PROFITS under the Cheney / Bush regime - $30 BILLION IN ONE QUARTER - yet they still managed to charge $4 - $5 PER GALLON for gas. That helped to imperil our economy. Why did they not lower the price to "reasonable levels"? Greed.

Oh yeah - I know EXACTLY what corporations ONLY interest is: unbridled greed, no matter how much America or her citizens suffer.

Why waste time trying to teach the unteachable? Why try and teach the unthinking to think. Why try and teach emotion to the narcissistic? It is completely pointless. There are about 10 million fringers in America. They are unreachable. Taa taa unreachable fringers. You folks are an entire older and elderly "Lost" generation. No one will ever reach you,and nobody ever has.

Corporations ARE NOT PEOPLE, nor are they interested in America or America's national interests.
_________________

First of all, let us define the word "corporation." In the strict everyday definition of the word, a corporation is "a group of people combined into or acting as one body." This word is derived from the Latin word "corpus," which means "body."

"[A corporation is] an artificial person or legal entity created by or under the authority of the laws of a state. An association of persons created by statute as a legal entity.

So to you, the American people do not care about their own interests ?

A hush will fall over the young crowd. All attention will be transfixed on the elephant in a black suit with tassels like Mohammad Ali on it's legs and sequins festooned over it's gigantic, bloated, pestilent hide. The donkey will be led into the ring with no headgear, or leggings, and only the clear light of truth with which to wage the battle. The elephant will be paraded and bellow lies....and deceit and corruption will belch from it's guts. The donkey, small and humble, will follow trying to avoid the huge piles of dung continuously squeezed out from the elephant. The elephant will dance, and parade for the crowd and will side step, and do the two step, and the crowd will roar... The donkey will step into the lights and do a slow balanced, accurate dance routine building to a whirling, jumping, acrobatic back somersault over the body of the elephant, and the crowd will be hushed. The elephant will become enraged and charge the donkey with felonious intent of trampling the smaller and humble animal. The elephant will rise on it's hind legs and throw it's massively bloated girth with a strained and hate filled look of greed over the donkey ...and the donkey will slowly and with grace step to the side and thrust a pure dagger of truth below the corpulent heart of the elephant beast. The elephant beast will fall of it's own sheer weight straight onto the dagger of truth and it's corpulent, greedy, heart will be pierced to the core. all the accumulated pestilent, rancid gas of the elephants gut will fill the air and people will gasp and recoil at the overwhelming stench of pure gluttonous greed that will fill the air. The elephant will fall, it's rancid heart exposed for all the crowd to see...The rotting corpse of the pestilent pachyderm will be foisted on it's own petard and paraded from talk show to talk show for all the world to see. Tomorrow! Young folks will see the truth, tomorrow!
