Feds Review Toyota Corolla Complaints

(CBS/AP)  Federal safety officials say they will look into complaints from Toyota Corolla drivers about difficulty with the steering on their vehicles.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has received about 80 complaints from drivers of 2009 and 2010 Corollas. Many say their cars can wander when they drive on the highway, making it hard to stay in lanes.

NHTSA says it will determine if a formal safety investigation is warranted. But agency officials also stress that it is standard procedure to review the tens of thousands of driver complaints they get every year on a wide range of vehicles.

Toyota's safety issues are under intense scrutiny due to recalls over gas pedal problems. The company also recalled some of its Prius hybrids last night.

CBS News correspondent Celia Hatton reports the entire episode has shaken the Japanese company's corporate culture to the core.

"I'm sure they thought they were a cut above every other automaker in the world," industry analyst Christopher Richter tells CBS News. "This kind of thing doesn't happen to Toyota."

2009 and 2010 Corolla drivers need to know that their steering is electric driven and does not handle like a normal steering. Turn it half an inch and you will be in the next lane. Toyota is at fault for not telling you how to drive an electric steering Corolla.

We've taken a car to the mechanic for a problem like this. It has to do with the crown of the road and how the car is aligned. For whatever reason, our car was aligned to be driven in the left lane. Personally, I didn't notice the problem because I usually drive in the left lane anyway.

"The company also recalled some of its Prius hybrids last night." The last I heard, they're all being re-called. This is a monumental foul up and will likely severely hur their sales for years to come.
