Militant Video Shows Abducted American

(AP)  A Shiite militant group in Iraq has posted an Internet video showing an American it says it abducted and who appears to be a contractor reported missing by the U.S. military.

The U.S. Department of Defense said Friday that American contractor Issa T. Salomi, 60, went missing Jan. 23 in Baghdad and that search and recovery efforts were under way, but it released no other details. The U.S. military in Baghdad on Saturday confirmed Salomi is missing but would not provide additional information.

In the video, the man - who did not identify himself - says his abductors from the League of the Righteous are demanding the release of militants and the prosecution of Blackwater security contractors accused of killing 17 Iraqis in 2007 in Baghdad.

"The second demand is to bring the proper justice and the proper punishment to those members of Blackwater company that have committed unjustifiable crimes against innocent Iraqi civilians," the man said. "And to bring justice by proper compensation to the families that have been involved in great suffering because of this incident."

Blackwater security contractors were protecting U.S. diplomats when the guards opened fire in Nisoor Square, a crowded Baghdad intersection, on Sept. 16, 2007. Seventeen people were killed, including women and children, in a shooting that inflamed anti-American sentiment in Iraq.

There was no way to verify the authenticity of the video, but a high-ranking Iraqi defense official told The Associated Press that Salomi was abducted by the militant group in the central Baghdad district of Karradah after being lured to the area by his kidnappers.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to release the information.

The Department of Defense said the missing contractor is from El Cajon, California.

The man in the video is seated in a chair and wearing what looks like a U.S. military uniform. Behind him is the black banner of the militant group, also known by its Arabic name, Asaib Ahl al-Haq.

He says his captors were demanding the immediate withdrawal of the U.S. military from Iraq.

The militant group's Web site claimed the man in the video is an American officer.

The same group was believed to be behind the kidnapping of British computer consultant Peter Moore in May 2007 along with his four British bodyguards. Moore was handed over to Iraqi authorities in late December. Three of the bodyguards were killed and the fourth is believed dead.

The British government has said no deals were struck for Moore's release, though it coincided with the transfer of the head of the militant group from U.S. to Iraqi custody.

Qais al-Khazali, along with his brother, were accused of organizing an attack on a local government headquarters in the city of Karbala that killed five U.S. soldiers on Jan. 20, 2007.

hungry, do you not think iraq was a front on the war on terror?

It WAS NOT a front in the war on terror, until we invaded and removed Saddam Hussein - the ONE MAN that kept Iraq "terrorist free", and also kept Iran in check.

Kidnapping and hostage taking is an islamist tactic dating well before the Crusades. Rather than fight out in the open or organize politically the islamist tactic is to punish people who really aren't responsible for anything. A weak tactic for cowards who have no solutions of their own and represent no one except their own little
lunatic fringe.

You hit it on the money about the republipigs they are the dirtiest party I have ever come up against. They will play dirty till there last breath, and only care about power, and regaining it at any cost. The dems look bad, but they have been stopped at every turn because of Senate rules, It is unbelievable how the republicans do not care about our country or the people in it, only care about their party, they tried today to pass a bipartisan bill to get things accomplished but John Boehner said they wouldn't vote for it. The Hispanic people understand, why because they have been held back along with the middle class, and it is the republicans, the last eight years that have made this country where you will be rich or Poor the middle is no more. Obama really cares about us, again who is stopping him, the darn republicans, with all the insults they have to the President I think it is a disgrace. Without Obama being in there when the economy fell thank GOD HE WAS, OR THE REPUBLICANS WOULD BE RIGHT THERE WITH US IN A SOUP LINE. ThANK YOU FOR YOUR COMMENT THERE ANCESTORS AT ONE TIME CAME TO THIS COUNTRY HOW EASY THEY FORGET. What goes around comes around they say.

Incase you haven't notice Bush and Cheney have been replaced by a bowing, butt kissin, apologizing for America socialist for a president.
The problem has been and still is after we were ATTACKED multiple times
our soldiers were given 'rules of engagement' and sent to do their job with one hand tied behind their back. If they had been allowed to make the enemy REALLY pay, we wouldn't be having these headlines.

Unfortunately, the majority of our troops were sent to Iraq instead of to the ACTUAL war on terror, which basically left the ACTUAL enemy unchecked, and free to operate as they please.

League of Righteous? What are they Superheroes now? If they want to do something Righteous tell'em to stop killing their own people. They only believe in two things - Dead and Deader. If your not either. Then you might as well be next.

I don't worry about our military, they'll do there 100% best as they always do. I just wish the Pentagon would let-em go and kick some butt, like they're suppose too. Wipe out all the idiots and they can all enjoy a free-er life then what they have.

I have serious doubts that this news story and feel it is more false than true. I have seen CBS NEWS shift in the past few weeks to the right wing, and become PRAVDA.

It would not surprise me if the Iraqi government is in on this kidnapping, since they seem to know everything about it.
