Google Not Only Target of China Hackers

By
CBSNews
(CBS)  In cyberspace this week, there's a heavyweight battle pitting China against Google, as well as American businesses. CBS News correspondent John Blackstone has more.

At first it seemed to be a cyber attack aimed at those who organized protests against China's control of Tibet. Still Tenzin Seldon, a student at Stanford, was surprised when Google told her someone in China was reading her e-mail.

"Actually there is a saying in our community that if you're not being watched by the Chinese government, you are probably not doing the best you can," Seldon said. "These hackers had to use some kind of high tech things which they could have access to my password."

But Google discovered this was much more than an attack on the e-mail of one Chinese human rights activist. Not only was Google itself a target of the cyber-spies, but so were at least 20 other major corporations.

"This is not a Google story," said Peter Navarro, author of "The Coming China Wars." "It is a story about industrial espionage, coming from China, attacking American business and our economy."

Navarro says the companies believed to have been attacked include Dow Chemical and Northrop Grumman.

"When they hack American business enterprises, it is a covert act of war on our economy at a time when their economy is growing at over 10 percent and we have a 10 percent unemployment rate," Navarro said.

At a place where they battle hackers every day, the computer security company McAfee, George Kurtz says the attacks were sophisticated and precisely targeted, "designed to get in, cover its tracks and steal corporate secrets and get out."

And for the companies involved, those secrets are valuable.

"Think about the amount of money they spend on [research and development] on a yearly basis -billions of dollars," Kurtz said. "Having trade secrets and potentially source code taken can be very damaging to them.

"One of the huge drivers of Chinese economic growth over the last several decades has been the forced technology transfer from America to China," Navarro said.

While there is no proof the Chinese government itself was involved in the attacks, Tenzin Seldon says American companies hoping to profit in China should beware.

"It is not them that has owned China; it is China that has owned them," Seldon said.

As others now look to protect themselves from Chinese hackers, China itself strictly censors the Internet behind what's been called "the Great Firewall."

Obama is just going to suck his thumb.

Why should we invest our money in new research and technology, be it green or otherwise, when China steals everything and sells it back to us at a lower price than we can produce it. Why should we wreck our economy trying to save the world when China and India doesn't care. Why are we sucking up to the world when most of the world's population hates our guts. Why is our ever enlarging government trying to gain more control over us. Anybody got the answers????

Buy from India instead. They're already cheaper than China and usually better quality.

Free Tibet
_______________

I agree with most of what you say, but "free tibet" ?

As you can, the size of "Tibet" is massive, and the Chinese are highly unlikely, and will never give up, such a large portion of their country.

Unfortunately, America's thirst for cheaper and cheaper goods fuels the market for low-priced products manufactured overseas...that's the bottom line.

Will Americans pay $100. for a dvd player "made in usa", when it should really cost, $30-40 if made elsewhere, in a foreign country ?

Empire-George-

Excellent Answer! I totally concur!

Amazing for you not blaming it on the Democratic Party and Liberals.

Yes, I know ROI (return on investment is the master). Consequently, nobody wants to invest in America. American High Productivity is totally meaningless. So, do not expect a future for America regardless of the Ideology in Government.

Capitalism loves China and India. Last year, China predicted a 8.6% GDP growth. The actual number was 11.7% growth in GDP. More cars were purchased in China than in America and Brazil combined for 2009.

I used to believe Communist China was only Economically More Powerful than USA but I am finding lately how incorrect I was. Communist China now also has a Modern Military equal or better than America:

The Financial Center of the world is moving from WallStreet to Shanghai China:

http://jutiagroup.com/2008/05/21/hong-kong-gaining-prominence-as-leading-global-financial-center/

We need to move to Communist China. Who cares about Freedom and Liberty when I have a good job (Prosperity) in Communist China.

What good is all the $Trillions and $Trillions of Investment into Innovation over the last 200 years when American Corporations OutSource everything they have 'Made in USA' to China and India?

All the Profit/Gains in WallStreet go to Emerging Market and International Investment Instruments.

Great Depression,
You are way off dude on chinese military. Western china those dudes are still on horseback. They have literally no sea power, not a single carrier in their fleet, not developed any unmanned surveillance flights, and their jet fighters need to be purchased from Russia. As for shanghai a financial center. No way. The RMB is not even convertible! You cannot get your money out of China. Don't belive the people mezmorized by China's phantom growth. It is just 60 years of pent up steam

The point here is very obvious. The only way Google can be accessible in China is if its behind the iron information curtain. On the free world side of the Aristocratic Communist China's firewall Google cannot be seen, much less reached. All this is being done with equipment made with American technology from huge companies like Cisco and IBM.

To pretend China is posing itself for an economic war and just as likely a physical war with the free world is a huge mistake. As soon as the military planner can assure victory is assured the war will start. For all we know, the opening shots have already been fired.

All this started with passage of CALEA that the US govt. mandated in 1995 so it could spy on its citizens. Little it knew that if NSA could spy so could other countries. What goes around come around.

I agree with you, because "we" need an enemy as usual, and China just happens to be the new guy around the block this time.

gitano, go read your history books? You will find that other than WWII (which was a war of convenience for the communists)Communist China has militarily and politically opposed the US in every way possible. It was only when they realized their communist country wasisolated did they open up to international trade. And then only in special trade sectors.

Who profits the most from this? Why the Communist Aristocracy of course. Compare how communist politicians live compared the majority of the Chinese people. They are living like kings while the majority of the Chinese are lucky to have a thatched roof over their heads and maybe 4 hours of electricity a week.

Free the wonderful people of China from the tyranny of the Communist Aristocray!

Free Tibet

Free these countries with information and the REAL TRUTH.

Now our dirty fighting Chinese friends are couter-striking through their propaganda agency aka Chinese Pres that the USA waged a pernicious web war in Iran resulting in the many riots and uprisings of late. Sure, all our fault and drag the Achmadinejad's into it.

Google's defiance of China's censorship mandate illustrates the power of corporate social responsibility initiatives to influence and reshape the repressive policies of authoritarian regimes. Secretary Clinton?s recent remarks about the? information curtain? dividing the world, reminded me of the apartheid era where much greater injustice and unspeakable acts against humanity were challenged and ultimately overcome through the use of corporate codes of conduct. Given the success of codes of conduct in ending apartheid, we should look at applying the same principles to lift the information curtain China and in other repressive countries. This was the subject of an article on the International Business Law Advisor---The Great Firewall of China: How Lessons from the Apartheid Era Can Lift the Information Curtain www.intlbusinesslaw.com
