Haiti Earthquake: Thousands Feared Dead

By
Katie Couric
(CBS)  CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric heads a team that is in Haiti covering the earthquake.

Dawn is supposed to bring hope. But today -- sunlight revealed hundreds of deadin the streets of Port-Au-Prince.

CBS News anchor Katie Couric reports parents have lost children, and children have lost their parents.

Survivors not overcome with grief used their bare hands to remove the rubble that trapped their families and neighbors. It's now a race to save the people buried under the destroyed hillside neighborhoods and shanty towns of the capital city.

"Information on the full extent of the damage is still scanty," said United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon.

A third of all Haitians - 3 million people - need emergency aid. One of the first priorities is setting up medical care for the thousands of injured. All three hospitals operated by Doctors Without Bordershave collapsed or had to be abandoned. Many of its doctors are missing.

What infrastructure Port-Au-Prince had -- is practically gone. The presidential palace, which weathered decades of political unrest, is in ruins. There's little water, spotty electricity, and no place to store the dead.

Adding to the chaos is that the biggest relief organization in Haiti -- the United Nations -- is in shambles. At least 14 UN workers are dead. More than 100 others may be buried under their collapsed headquarters.

A search and rescue team from Virginia is already here. They'll be joined by other teams as far away as Europe and China. A U.S. aircraft carrier is on its way. Two thousand Marines may follow.

"We're looking at all the options to make sure we have as much flexibility as possible," said General Douglas Fraser, U.S. Southern Command.

In the best of times, Haitians endure daily hardships. Four out of five people here already lived in poverty. Few could imagine the catastrophe unleashed by the 30 second earthquake that left Port-Au-Prince covered in a cloud of dust.

The coming days will be about survival: for the injured, the orphaned, and an entire nation that now faces the greatest crisis in its history.

Re: Regarding the recent Gay assaults and bashings here in New York City:
My fellow human beings of the world:
I am total disgusted and outraged at the recent gay bashings that occurred and was reported in today?s Saturday October 9th, 2010 newspapers in the Bronx area of New York City,
I am here today to speak out and denounce the recent gay bashings against several individuals for being gay in the Bronx Area of New York City by alleged gang members...
I employ each and everyone in the world to rally and protest these recent gay bashings against gay people for being gay.
We are all human beings and should be treated as so, no one has the right to discriminate against anyone whether they are gay, straight, lesbians, Bi-sexual, transgender, male, female, White, Black, Spanish, Asian, Indians, tall, short, ugly, good-looking, fat, skinning or have any disabilities.
We should all treat everyone the same as we would like to be treated.
I encourage each and everyone to stand up and speak out and denounce any form of discrimination against any fellow human beings.
No one deserves to be discriminated against whether it be by verbal, physical, mentally, emotionally or financially, if you hear or see someone being discriminated against for any reason, you should speak up and denounce it and by all means reported it the proper authorities right away, don?t stand by and be silent.
As a former New York Yankees clubhouse attendant, I know all to well what it?s like to be discriminated against and assaulted and gay bashed for being who I am and that?s why I have decided to speak out and denounce these recent gay bashings.
Over the course of one month, six young youths have committed suicide for being bullied for either being gay or presumed to have been gay, this needs to be addressed rights away and things need to be done, so that other young youths don?t follow the same faiths as these six young youths have.
Other recent news of gay bashings took place in New York City?s Chelsea area and at the Stonewall inn, the past few days.
We need to teach these pigheaded minded people that they don?t have the rights to discriminate, assault or gay bash anyone for being who they are or living the lifestyle they choose to live.
Education and tolerance are the keys to stamping out all forms of discriminations.
We are all the same human beings; we all put our pants on the same way.
Do we not bleed the same? Are our hands not the same?, Do we not breath the same?, everyone has some member of their families or know someone who is gay or different in their lives and we all learn to accept everyone as equals.
No one has the right to say how someone should live, just because some people don?t understand how a person is or lives.
Just because a person is different, it doesn?t give people the rights to go out and hurt someone or even worse kill someone for being different.
We all need to ban together and do everything in our powers to stop all forms of discrimination right away, enough is enough.
Education and teaching tolerance is the only way we all can achieve our goals.
We have all these laws on the books that are suppose to stop all forms of discriminations, but so much more needs to be done.
If you or someone is the victim of any form of discrimination, by all means report it right away to everyone and put a stop to it right now.
I hope I was able to bring these recents events to the forefront and help people to think with their brains and stop discrimination in its tracks.
These are my own personally beliefs and opinions.
Thank You.
Sincerely,
Paul Priore

To all Concern regarding the Mosque being built nears the World Trade Center:
I support it wholeheartedly 100%,
This reminds me of a person in California years ago who was the victim of Police Brutality, his name was Rodney King and he made a phrase saying and I quote ?Can?t we all just get along?
These words we all should live by.
Not all Muslin people are bad people despite what happen on September 11th, 2001, I want to share with all of you about a positive thing that happened to me as a result of a handful of Pakistani Muslin, people who stood up for me during the Gay Parade of 2003, if all of you remembered the Marriage Equity was trying to force Gay Marriage down all of our throats and since I was one of the lone opposition to Gay Marriage, Civil Unions and Gay Adoptions and was publicly vocal about my stance, Marriage Equity tried to have me thrown out of the Gay Parade because they didn?t like me exercising my first Amendment constitution rights to freedom of speak and freedom of expression and, it was only then a small group of Gay Pakistani Muslin who stood up for me and allowed me and my deceased Lover Guillermo and a friend name Alex to march with their contingent throughout the course of that Gay Parade, although none of us knew each other it was one of the nicest things that any person or group has done for me and I will always be grateful to all of them for their support, none of those Pakistani Muslins had to do anything for me but they chose to get involved and support me because of what Marriage Equity was trying to do to me.
I strong believe this will be a positive step forward for everyone to try and get along with each other.
This is a true story.
Thank You.
Sincerely,

Re: Chili's Earthquake:
To all concerned:
What is going on with all these tragedies lately?
Everytime you turn around something strange is going on.
Today, the country of Chile was hit with an earthquake and now it might end up having a tsunami and now we hear that even Hawaii and California is also in danger of a Tsunami.
I guess the gods are pretty angry and pissed off at the world.
There must be something that we can do to inform the people of these pending tragedies before they happen, so that many people lives can be saved.
It is a terrible lost of innocent lives and my hearts and prayers go out to the families of their lost love ones.
Sincerely,

Re: The U.S. Constitution protecting the terrorists:
Our founding fathers wrote and enacted certain protected rights known as the U.S. Constitution that was put in place to protect each and every U.S. born citizen.
Some of the rights that are supposed to be afforded to U.S. born citizens are due process of the law, a trial by jury, and every person to have the opportunity to confront their accusers and have any and/all evidence against them presented.
These same Constitutional laws are suppose to be enforced by our elected officials and justices but not all of them think or feel that they have to follow the letter of the law, they think they can re-write the laws anytime they want to suit their own purposes or agenda?s, all the while preaching to every law abiding citizen to follow these same laws that elected officials and justices break.
The elected officials and justices have lost all sight of what is right and wrong, case in point, a few years ago, I was discriminated against by the New York Yankees and some of their players, even though I complained to management on several occasions to no avail.
I even went as far as to file a lawsuit in hopes of getting justice but of course money and politics played a big role in the justice?s decision in my case and they dismissed my case because they were bigots, they never once looked at my evidence to support my allegations and took the Yankee?s word at face value, knowing that these people committed willful oral testimonial perjury, when I continued to press the issue and wanted to produce my evidence, no one cared or wanted to help deal with it, they just dismissed me and my complaint.
Another time just recently I received a bogus, unjustified parking ticket and again my rights to due process of the law were being violated.
The elected officials and justices have no qualms about giving the terrorists or illegal immigrants protected rights but have no problems violating American citizens civil and constitutional rights, what?s wrong with this picture., something needs to be done about this and people need to wake up and smell the coffee.
Sooner or later American people are going to get fed up and strike back against the United States because they are getting tired of all the B.S.
The United States government is so concerned about terrorist blowing plane up at airports but they failed to look at the real dangers, there is a park in New York City known as Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, the home of the U.S. Tennis association and the Mets Baseball team, the terrorists don?t need to board planes to blow them up all they need to do is get a hold of shoulder to shoulder heat sensor missiles sit on any bench in that park and while the planes are flying low on their way in to La Guardia airport, point the missile at them and blow them up, for a number of years I have raised the possibility of this happening and no one wants to listen, sooner or later the terrorists are going to figure this out and act upon it and it will be too late for anyone to stop them.
I counted many planes flying over that park in a couple of hours and said to myself, how easy it will be for terrorist to do harm, hopefully the terrorists will never figure that out but they are getting more and more created with their methods of attacks.
Hopefully, our government officials will finally listen and do something to prevent this from ever happening.
Thank You.
Sincerely,
Paul Priore

re: relief efforts in haiti"
the united states didn't learn from their mistakes with regards to september 11th,2001 and hurricane katrina.
the country of haiti is only 2 hours away from the united states and i can't fathom why they haven't gotten any cruise ships to move the injured out of haiti or even considered airlifting every survivor to another place such as the republic of dominica or neighboring other countries to help them get the nessary medical attention and food.
i would like to know why?
what does everyone else think?
thank you.
sincerely,

Re: The recent Earth Quake in Haiti:
The only reason the United States of America is getting involved with helping the Haitian victims of the recent Earth Quake is because they have an ulterial motive and will benefit greatly with charging the American taxpayers higher taxes to cover the re-building process and all the elected officials and big business will reap the financial gains from the higher taxes and re-building process, lets not be fooled for one minute here people, no one does anything or gives any money without some form of motive.
These same hypocrites were nowhere in sight when it came to helping the American victims who needed help from other various tragedies such as September 11, 2001, Hurricane Katrina, the victims of Ponzi Schemes, the recent job market loses, the recent foreclosure situation and other stuff of that nature.
This is nothing but a big sham in the eyes of the world to make the United States of America look good and to allow Elected Officials and big business to continue to steal our money and also give the news media outlets the much needed ratings and financial rewards they need, that's all it truly is.
Wake up and smell the coffee people and see the whole picture for what is really is and wait until each and every American taxpayer receives higher taxes to cover the cost of re-building Haiti despite the fact that everyone is donating monies to help Haiti.
The United States of America will also allow Haiti harden criminals to get amnesty and cause more crimes and troubles for the American people.
Just You wait and see, mark my words, I see this coming soon.
These are My personal Opinions and beliefs based on my own personal experiences.
Thank You.

To all concerned regarding the earth quake in Haiti:

I have no problem with ehlping people in need but I do have a problem the United States of America always being the savior to all the worlds problems by helping out all the non Americans but turning their backs onAmerican people.
Case in point, the people who suffered through hurricane Katrina, people who are homeless, people who are losing their homes to forecloseure, elderlt people who are on a fixed income and are forced to eat dog & cat foods, people without jobs and so on, what about all those people in need.
No one wants to deal with those situations, I strongly believe America needs to wake up and smell the coffee and help us first before we help the rest of the world.
This is my personal opinion and belief and I stand by my beliefs.
Thank You.
Sincerely,
Paul Priore
