Lessons We Can Learn From Dogs

By
Bob Schieffer
(CBS)  I have no idea where this came from or who wrote it - if I did I'd give them credit - but a friend who knows I love dogs e-mailed the following, which I pass along today only because it seems a nice thing to share at the beginning of a new year.

It's a list of what we would learn if dogs were our teachers. Such as:

Always run to greet loved ones when they come home.

Never pass the opportunity to go for a joy ride.

Recognize the ecstasy of fresh air and wind in your face.

Take naps. (I do that!)

Stretch before rising.

Run, romp and play daily.

Thrive on attention (I do that) and let people touch you.

Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.

On warm days, lie on your back in the grass. On hot days, drink lots of water and find the shade.

When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body.

Enjoy long walks.

Be loyal.

Never pretend to be something you're not.

If what you want is buried, dig deep until you find it.

And, when someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by and nuzzle them gently.

We'd be better off, better people . . . if we acted more like dogs.

Good story. They can say a lot without words, can't they?

It's a sad day when humans have to look to dogs for life coaching.

May I add to the list
Dogs are not greedy
They just are the souls they are
They are like angels
They help others
They may want a treat or a pat
I have never had a dog
Yet some dogs just know I am different.
They want to be sure I am safe.
We had a gewst over and he failed to bring his dog.
I made his go get her.
It was her last Thanksgivens as she passed on the next Jan.
I loved Zoey and we did dog sit.
She was always welcome to come to our place.
We kept food for her.
She did not like fans yet the computer was fine with her
She perfered to sleep where ever but mostly in my room
She knew our rules
She loved us and we loved her
I am glad she went to where dogs gowhen she passed on
We could learn alot from our dog friends.
They ask for so little.
She was a good dog.

He forgot to mention "care for offspring". Dogs do a better job of that than some people do.......

"Bob Schieffer Says Humans Would Be Better Off If We Let Dogs Be Our Teachers"

Michael Vick learned that lesson the hard way.

In Plato's Republic, Socrates and his friend Adeimantus have a discussion on the subject of dogs as "natural philosophers":

Socrates: "Would not he who is fitted to be a guardian, besides the spirited nature, need to have the qualities of a philosopher?"

Adeimantus: "I do not apprehend your meaning."

Socrates: "The trait of which I am speaking, I replied, may be also seen in the dog, and is remarkable in the animal."

Adeimantus: "What trait?"

Socrates: "Why, a dog, whenever he sees a stranger, is angry; when an acquaintance, he welcomes him, although the one has never done him any harm, nor the other any good. Did this never strike you as curious?"

[I guess all ancient Greek dogs were watchdogs.]

Adeimantus: "The matter never struck me before; but I quite recognize the truth of your remark."

Socrates: "And surely this instinct of the dog is very charming; your dog is a true philosopher."

Adeimantus: "Why?"

Socrates: "Why, because he distinguishes the face of a friend and of an enemy only by the criterion of knowing and not knowing. And must not an animal be a lover of learning who determines what he likes and dislikes by the test of knowledge and ignorance?"

Adeimantus: "Most assuredly."

I had a Beloved Cat named Joey who Died a year & 3 months ago. I was going through some difficult times & once in awhile when i would get angry with him i would sometimes smack him or yell at him. 30 seconds later i would grab him & Hug him & tell him i was sorry. To this day i am so ashamed of myself! I hope he can forgive me, because i'm having a hard time forgiving myself.
