CIA Bomber in Video With Taliban Leader

(CBS/AP)  A Jordanian doctor-turned-suicide bomber and triple agent who killed 7 CIA agents and a Jordanian intelligence agent in Afghanistan on December 30, appeared in a video broadcast by a Pakistani TV station on Saturday, meeting with Pakistan's main Taliban leader, and provoking widespread reaction over his ties with militants on both sides of the Pak-Afghan border.

The video showed Humam Khalil Abu-Mulal al-Balawi, the 32-year-old Jordanian doctor - reportedly a spy recruited by the CIA Jordan's intelligence services and Taliban militants - sitting besides Hakimullah Mehsud, leader of Pakistan's Taliban militants, reports CBS News' Farhan Bokhari.

The privately-owned AAJ TV channel said of al-Balawi that "Jordanian and American intelligence had offered him millions of dollars in exchange for spying on the mujahideen (holy warriors). But he rejected wealth and joined the mujahideen."

The channel said he had "shared all his secrets of Jordan and American intelligence" with his fellow militants.

The video was also shown on al-Jazeera, the Arabic network.

In the recording al-Balawi noted that the Pakistani Taliban had given shelter to "emigrants" - Muslim fighters from abroad.

"We will never forget the blood of our emir Baitullah Mehsud," said al-Balawi, who wore Afghan dress on the 1 1/2 minute video. [Baitullah Mehsud, the group's longtime leader, was killed in August by a CIA missile strike.] "We will always demand revenge for him inside America and outside. It is an obligation of the emigrants who were welcomed by the emir."

The appearance of the video coincides with widespread concern over a major intelligence failure which led to the attack at the CIA's forward operating base known as Camp Chapman, in the Khost province of eastern Afghanistan. The attack was seen as a major coup for the Taliban in their ability to infiltrate some of the supposedly best-secured U.S. facilities in Afghanistan, ahead of the arrival of up to 30,000 additional troops ordered by President Obama.

Though linked, the Pakistani Taliban and the Afghan Taliban are separate movements.

The Afghan Taliban are focused on ridding Afghanistan of Western troops and toppling the U.S.-backed government in Kabul, while the Pakistani Taliban are primarily determined to overthrow the U.S.-allied government in Islamabad.

But both militant movements are largely driven by Pashtuns, an ethnic group that straddles both sides of the Afghan-Pakistan border and whose members easily slip back and forth between the countries.

However, after appearance of the video, western diplomats renewed warnings of the deep links between Taliban militants and al Qaeda with groups on both sides of the Afghanistan-Pakistan border.

"How can you have this guy (al-Balawi) coming easily in to the Pakistani side of the border and having himself filmed with the most notorious gentleman on Pakistan's territory, unless the links are very, very close?" said a western diplomat who spoke to CBS News on condition of anonymity.

The warning followed mounting concerns among western officials, notably from the U.S., who routinely urge Pakistan to further intensify its campaign beyond the attacks of the past year, targeting suspected sites belonging to Taliban militants.

A Pakistani intelligence official who also spoke to CBS News, however, rebutted claims of links between al-Balawi and Pakistan. "The video doesn't say where it was filmed, so let's not jump to conclusions just yet. As far as Hakimullah Mehsud is concerned, he is an enemy of Pakistan, so how can this Jordanian doctor be even remotely connected to anyone other than enemies of Pakistan?" said the Pakistani intelligence official.

Since President Obama announced his decision to send more troops to Afghanistan, speculation has grown in recent weeks that U.S. military pressure may grow on Pakistan as well. Last week, a Pakistani cabinet minister who spoke on the condition of anonymity to a small group of news organizations (including CBS News) said that any U.S. "incursion into Pakistani territory to hunt down terrorists will backfire because our government and our military will not be able to continue our support to the U.S." His comments echoed wider concerns among Pakistani rulers over the possibility of ground incursions inside Pakistan by Afghanistan-based U.S. troops, once the surge is completed.

The U.S. and other democratic nations need to form an alliance to thwart Muslim terrorists. These idiots tape their message, to scare innocent civilians. These terrorists are cowards, who are afraid to face an equally armed and prepared foe. They prefer setting off bombs to kill and maim innocent civilians including women and children, rather than launch an attack against a military unit.

Cruise missile technology works very well. The terrorists can run, but they should not be able to hide.

Any people suspected of harboring these evil terrorists should know they are susceptible to attack from a missile. Eventually other Muslims will grow very weary of such happenings, and they will take action against the Muslim terrorists.

Until then, I believe all Muslim terrorists should be constantly looking over their shoulder, and sleeping with one eye open.

This is a battle to the death with the West vs the Middle East and you silly westerners will all be dead before you figured that the only way to win this war is to be brutal and exact a swift & deliberate death to all those who pose a threat. The real problem is that we may have the watches yet they have the time. So if you are not prepared for a thousand year battle you better nuke them now before they will nuke you. Does anyone really believe that IRAN will not be giving out nukes to all their friends? Its either we live or die and just remember folks it was Ronnie Ray Gun and all his GOP gunslingers that thought it would be fun to slip some Stingers to these wacky Muslims and when they saw that they could actually kick butt of the #2 power in the world why not take over the world and kick everyone?s rear. Nice going your GOP reactionary fools now we are all dead.

To watch President Obama and our U.S. Congress almost makes me mad at times with all this political correctness. Our number one priority should be keeping this country and it's "citizens" safe and if it means hurting someone feelings by using a word that may offend them, so be it, they can get over it.
If you want to fly in and out of this country and have to be strip searched then so be it, if you don't like it then find another way to travel. When I hear "Muslims wants us (American citizens) dead" to me that means "all" Muslims so I don't trust any of them. I remember when Cassius Clay changed his name and his religion to Muslim to stay out of the military saying it was against his religion to kill anyone when the truth was he was a coward, afraid he may go to Vietnam if drafted while young Americans went while he stayed behind to make his millions. This is when I started thinking all Muslims were cowards who used their religion as an excuse, but now they use it wanting us dead and they are doing a good job of it. If it takes a real war on terror and hundreds of thousands of Muslims die in that process they are not worth one innocent Americans life. If the Commander and Chief has to plain "English" and tell the Muslim world that if you want us dead stop being cowards and put on a uniform and wage war against us that way, but I know you won't because like I said, your cowards and if I was at the podium at the White House I would call you cowards who hide and use tactics of cowards to kill innocent people, no better than a serial killer.

I personally do NOT care how many Muslims kill each other. When I see that at least ONE is killed in a suicide bombing, to me that's just one less to contend with. But when you have at least ONE (1) dead American, worse yet, SEVEN (7), the fact that the "trusted" Islamic bomber was "ALMOST" searched, ALMOST does NOT mean a thing to the surviors of the murdered CIA workers. When Muslims kill Americans, they are in their glory. Muslims are the most deceitful people I have EVER known, and have known a few. (but did not trust them). And each time a terrorist attack occurs, Islamic centers throughout the world will "disavow" knowledge of such events and that Islam is a "religion of peace". Can anyone name a terrorist attack made by Jews? Canadians? British? French? Spanish? None that I can recall; they are all attacks by Muslims. When they Muslims attack and kill, they want "tolerance". But in EVERY Muslim country, there are the buring of American flags and effigies of most leaders EXCEPT Obama.
