Revelations from the Campaign

By
CBSNews
(CBS)  Barack Obama is just ten days away from completing the first year of his presidency, but surprising revelations about the historic campaign that got him there are still coming to light.

It turns out Hillary Clinton was so confident she would become president, that a full year before the election she had already started planning for her transition into the White House.

That's in a new book by reporters Mark Halperin and John Heilemann, who have also brought details to light about the Republican campaign; some of them directly contradict what Sarah Palin wrote in her book.

Palin said she had been misunderstood and mishandled by top McCain staffers. The new book quotes McCain staffers saying Palin created most of the problems.

John McCain's chief campaign strategist Steve Schmidt had a major role in choosing Sarah Palin. Just days before the Republican National Convention, John McCain thought he'd be running with Joe Lieberman.

Schmidt told CNN's Anderson Cooper why McCain pivoted from Lieberman to Palin.

"Roughly up to a week before the convention, we were still talking very seriously about Senator Lieberman. But once word leaked out that he was under serious consideration, the blowback was ferocious," Schmidt remembered.

"Ferocious," because many conservatives thought Lieberman was far too liberal. Schmidt says they feared the Republican National Convention might reject him.

McCain couldn't risk that, so they needed a last-minute replacement.

"So, suddenly you're in a jam," Cooper remarked.

"We were," Schmidt acknowledged.

"That's the state of desperation they're in as they sit down with McCain that Sunday night over a dinner of deep fried burritos and say to him, 'What about Sarah Palin?'" author John Heilemann told Cooper.

Heilemann, of New York Magazine, and Mark Halperin, of Time, covered the campaign and spent the last two years interviewing 200 political insiders for their book, "Game Change."

Among their revelations is how McCain's campaign manager, Rick Davis, spotted Sarah Palin while searching the Internet for possible female vice presidential candidates.

"Rick Davis saw one interview she did with Charlie Rose where she was very much the Sarah Palin that people find appealing. She was lively, she was engaging, she popped off the screen. And he said, 'Wow, she jumps out,'" Halperin said.

"McCain boxed himself in. He needed a game-changing pick for vice president. And that left them with a last minute pick of someone who was, to McCain, a virtual stranger, and was, to his senior staffers, an absolute stranger," he added.

Just two days before McCain publicly announced his choice, Palin arrived in Arizona to meet with the senator and his top staffers, including chief campaign strategist Steve Schmidt.

"I said, 'If this project goes forward you'll be one of the most famous people in the world by Friday. Will you be able to live with that?' She said she would be able to," Schmidt remembered.

Asked how Palin responded after McCain asked her to be his vice president, Schmidt said, "She was very calm. Nonplussed. I said, 'You don't seem nervous at all about this.' And she said, 'No, it's God's plan.'"

"In terms of vetting, was there enough time to do the kind of vetting you would have liked?" Cooper asked.

"I'm not going to second guess the process," Schmidt replied.

The process, according to the authors, was so rushed the background check was little more than one lawyer searching the Internet; no one went to Alaska.

"I wasn't the vetter on the campaign," Schmidt pointed out.

"Early on, though, you apparently said, 'She doesn't know anything,'" Cooper remarked.

"In the immediate aftermath of her selection, it was clear to us that we had a lot of work to do," Schmidt said.

Asked what kind of information Palin didn't know, Schmidt said, "A broad scale of national security issues. But we expected that that would be the case with any of the potential nominees."

I used to think that 60 minutes was a legitimate show. Now I know it isn't. Won't be watching anymore. Another lame-stream media show. I hope you and Barry live happily ever after.

It is truely frightening that anyone would consider Sarah Palin for a position in government and appalling that she was picked to run for vice president. Hey, I know the folksy appeal and the pretty appeal---it works every day on Madison Avenue, but COME ON. This lady is a bubblehead. There's nothing upstairs!!! The only saving grace for this woman is that her own confidence in herself has put off any behind the scenes bigwig that might want to use her as a puppet president. She says and does what she wants and is not reliable to be an extension of anyone else. Thank God for that.

Having just finished "Going Rogue", I guess Sarah was just too honest about Steve Schmidt and CBS. They sure got even, didn't they? I hope she's running in 3 years...she has my support.

Sarah Palin will be our next President of the United States. Powerful, poised, pretty, patient, practical and positively plausible! PALIN POWER! Only Sarah Palin can rid Washington of crookedness and lies. No more pork barrel spending...no more earmarks and lobbyists. She is hated by many in Washington because she is not part of it, and she is a threat to it. PALIN 2012

That's right. Peace and prosperity will reign. Every man will have trillions to spend. Poo will no longer smell bad.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go run through a field of daisies in slow motion...

LOL!!! I get a kick out of all of you who always seem to pick and choose what they want to hear or pay attention to. First of all Anderson Cooper is the reporter, bringing us the story. Don?t be angry about THAT! Direct your anger to the real reason of your anxiety. The authors of the book ?Game Change? was the topic. Try to follow me here! The authors are from former John McCain?s campaign. It was they who stated that Joe Liebermann was McCain?s actual first choice (maybe I would have voted Republican had Joe ran for VP, humm, would that make me a liberal? lol) but it wasn?t until after they chose Sarah that they regretted it! Why, because she didn?t know anything! Didn?t know anything about our national security, foreign policy, etc. etc. etc.and why because they did a background check over the ?INTERNET?. Over the internet folks!!! They found her when they ?GOOGLED? her!!! They googled and they ?you-tubed? her! WHAT!!! Yes! That is how the Republican Party decided to pick the Vice President of the United States! Poor Sarah, she didn?t even know why her Son was being sent off to fight! Come on people! She knew NOTHING! Her Son was being sent off and she couldn?t explain who her son was going to fight! AND to think that she thought Hudan Hussain was part of 911 was the most insulting thing of all. I for one am so glad these guys wrote this book to get the truth out. You may not like the truth but I?m glad it?s out! AND to call Joe Biden, OBiden, lol was so funny, so ?Sarah?! Palin is a failure get over it! Find other women who are more intelligent, inclusive, peaceful, and community oriented to serve our country. I think that is why we are in war, because of government officials as stupid as Sarah Palin AND!, No wonder, reporters and or analysts always think they have to interpret the news or think they have to interpret speeches of Presidents or government officials, it?s folks like the examples I just read here who distort what is being brought out. PLEASE you don?t have to interpret the news or speeches for me! I get it! Thanks CBS and Thanks Cooper! Keep digging for the TRUTH!

I don't think Palin has any illusions (or delusions) that she will some day be President. I do think that she will have a successful career making the far left squeal like pigs in a slaughter house. She seems to have a knack for that!! Just look at the posts on any Palin stories! Lefties start wetting their pants at just the sight of her name---which find hilarious. She won't be Prez & I doubt she will ever hold any office again.

You are so sadly mistaken. Us lefties are simply marveling at the stupidity of the righties and how you continue to demonstrate your total polictical ineptness. Sarah Palin as president, laughable. Sarah Palin as Fox News anchor, predictable. Sarah Palin having an opinion, priceless!

Palin was obviously a "Hail Mary pass" by the McCain campaign. They had nothing to lose. Heck, the Republicans with any brains KNEW they didn't stand a chance in the last election after W. disastrous tenure.

Actually, I felt very sorry for McCain. He's served his country a long time. I would never have voted for him but it was nasty of the Republicans to push him up to the podium to run against Obama.

Palin? Sorry, I can't feel anything but incredulous disgust at her. She's a dimwitted narcissist.

She's a dimwitted narcissist.

And Barry's not??? He's the poster child for both idiot and narcissist!
by daffy64 January 11, 2010 2:44 PM EST
I wouldn't say that. He graduated top of his class as a Constitutional Lawyer. His thoughtful well written books would indicate he's anything but an "idiot". He just won a Nobel peace prize. They're not given out to idiots.

And what would make you think he's a narcissist? His expensive wardrobe?

PS: Point well taken. You don't like the guy. You don't have to yell.
