Google's Nexus One an iPhone "Killer"?

By
CBSNews
(CBS)  Google has just released its sleek new smartphone, called the "Nexus One."

The touch-screen phone, which runs the Android operating system, isn't all that revolutionary in technology, but it's a step into new territory for the Web search giant.

But will it prove to be an "iPhone killer"? Will it dethrone the iPhone?

Nexus One's features are comparable to those of the iPhone, CBS News science and technology correspondent Daniel Sieberg observed on "The Early Show." However, features such as an enhanced voice search are what Google is trying to capitalize on, Sieberg said.

"Your mobile device is with you more and more," he said. "You use it for more than just a phone. It's a mini computer in your pocket all the time."
Seiberg compared the warring devices:

Google Nexus One
Price and Carrier(s) $179 with a T-Mobile contract
$529 without a contract (3G access on AT&T)
Hardware 5 MP camera, 7 hour 3G use time, 4 GB flash (up to 32 GB)
Pros: Maps, Searches, noise-cancelling, multiple carriers
Cons: Keyboard, no iTunes

Apple iPhone 3GS
Price and Carrier: $199 w/ AT&T contract
Hardware 3 MP camera, 5 hour 3G use time, 16 GB (or 32 GB)
Pros: iTunes, App Store, computer syncing
Cons: AT&T only carrier

Sieberg said in terms of price you will pay more with the Google Nexus One if you want to go with a carrier other than T-Mobile.

However, the option of an unlocked device, Sieberg said, is a benefit for some people who want to avoid being locked into one company, such as iPhone users who must use AT&T service.

As for the two phones' hardware, Sieberg said, the five megapixel camera with Nexus One is powerful.

"It has a flash," he said. "The iPhone has a three megapixel camera. People have complaints with it."

In addition, the Nexus One has a seven-hour battery, and a program that tells you what you're using with your battery power. Apple's iPhone has a five-hour battery.

As for drawbacks with the Nexus One, Sieberg said the keyboard is "finicky," and there isn't accessibility to iTunes -- just Amazon.com.

"Content can be king for these devices," he said. "You talk about the iPhone -- everyone loves getting music and movies from there. You can get music from Amazon, but not the same thing for a lot of people."

Sieberg predicted the two companies will ultimately be competing over consumers' attention.

"That's where this is going. They want to get mobile ad dollars between these two devices," he said. "They're going at it big time."

why can't one smart cell phone give what the majority of consumers want, how is that so difficult to do? for example, almost any automobile is equipped with what a driver wants or the auto can be equipped if the driver wants the options and pays for them. why don't all cell phones have the same battery life, the same camera pixels, and so on. the nexus is not a direct competitor with the iphone because the iphone still offers some good features but unfortunately one is hosed with having to use AT&T. Apple should open up the iphone for all carriers to be able to use it.

No problems! Just write to your U.S. Congressman and demand a Tax Credit if you buy anyone of these devices. Never mind the Forever High Monthly Carrier Service Fees and the Federal Budget Deficit. China will love you for it.

I'd love one of these phones but until the prices come WAY down...I'll stick to a simple flip-phone. I-phones are just too expensive for the average working guy!

People that love these devices are usually people that can't find their butts with both hands.

Americans do not have the money for a Special Tax to pay down our $13 Trillions Foreign Debt. Americans do not have the money to invest in the future of America.

However, Americans have the time and money for an iPhone or a Nexus and the required high Monthly Service Fees.

The iPhone and Nexus are made in Taiwan and China. Therefore, more Cash and therefore Political Power for these already Cash Rich nations.

God Bless America!

They see that they get something for their money. Even people that play the lottery at least get a chance to win something. With taxes they get $600+ billion for the Pentagon and more debt that has to be paid with interest.

20 years ago, Americans lived happy without an iPhone, Nexus or mobile phones.

Compared to 20 years ago, fewer Americans buy lotto tickets because the chance is almost zero - just ask California.

I want to pay down or eliminate our OutStanding Debt (deep toilet hole) or else do not cry baby.

That extra money you spend for it unlocked seems to pay for itself within a year and half, with the amount of money I'd save putting it on one of those boost mobile or metro pcs plans that give you unlmtd talk text and web for $50...when and when do i sign up???

Number of megapixels by itself does not mean a better camera. Two factors are more important, the lens and the sensors which digitize the incoming light. The higher the number of pixels also means two things:

1. Pictures take more memory. (Far more required than an image you'd post on the web... which is where most photos are placed for display nowadays.)

2. It increases the cycle-times between shots. That is: it takes longer for the camera to get ready for another photo.

Having a flash though, is a plus. But it matters little... iTunes and music, TV show, movie, and audiobook total management is the real differentiator. Everything else the Google phone has, Apple can more easily add to their phone over time.

If you're a Mac user, the iPhone interfaces with all your software: Address Book, iTunes, iPhoto, iWeb, iMovie, etc. That's hard to pass up.
