(CBS)  Republican Rep. Peter King said Sunday on CBS' "Face The Nation" that the attempted terrorist attack aboard a Delta/Northwest flight on Christmas Day shows "the system did not work," despite comments made by Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano.

"Earlier today, Secretary Napolitano said the system worked. The fact is the system did not work," the New York congressman told host John Dickerson. "We have to find a bipartisan way to fix it. He made it on the plane with explosives and he detonated the explosives."

In the interview, King also called for President Obama or members of his administration to use the failed attack as a "teaching moment" to remind Americans "how deadly this enemy is."

"I think it's important for the president or the secretary to be more out there and reminding the people just how real this threat was and how deadly it is," King said. "This is a teaching moment, to use the president's term. And I believe that he or the secretary or the vice president or the attorney general should be out there reminding the American people, saying this shows how deadly this enemy is. This shows how real this threat is and why we have to do whatever we possibly can to protect the American people."

Democratic Rep. James Clyburn of South Carolina, the House Majority Whip, said, however, that he agreed with the administration's visibility in the days since the incident.

"I think that the president, in his response, is doing exactly as he should do," he said, also on "Face the Nation." "I think that in so many instances these terrorists get more benefit from the reaction they cause than from the action they take. And so I believe that for the president to be very measured in reactions -- in his reactions, not elevating this thing to the point that it would be satisfactory to terrorists, is exactly the way to do it."

"Peter King is a good buddy. He is given to a little bit of hyperbole sometimes," added Clyburn.

King said that although there was "no need to rush to a microphone" and that he was confident Mr. Obama was doing "all that he possibly can in this instance to protect the American people," that it was still important for him to be more visible.

"This is a president who has been on television, made more television appearances, more news conferences than any president in history," he said.

"To me, it would be very important to, in a very calm reassuring way, tell the American people, this is what we're doing; we're on top of this; we're going to win, but this is a reminder of why we always have to be alert to the evils of Islamic terrorism," said King.

"Instead, there has been a virtual vacuum for the last day-and-a-half," King added. "And I'm not making this partisan. I mean, nobody was better than Bill Clinton at addressing the American people and explaining to them what we were facing. And that's really all I'm saying."

Both King and Clyburn said more screening procedures are likely to be needed at airports.

"I would say, right now, we do need the full-body scan, especially when you have countries like Nigeria, which have inadequate security to begin with; then you have passengers transiting in Amsterdam and coming here," King said. "I think we have to face up to this reality, that we live in a dangerous world where Islamic terrorists want to kill us. And, yes, there is some brief violation of privacy with a full body scan. But on the other hand, if we can save thousands of lives, to me, we have to make that decision and we have to come down on the side of saving thousands of lives."

Clyburn said that although this was a "very narrow incident," the similarities with the "shoe-bomber" incident in 2001 necessitated more screening at airports.

"The fact of the matter is we see something taking place here that disturbs me a little bit," he said. "I remember the incident of the shoe bomber… The same flammable material, explosive that he used seems to have been used in this instance. So it would seem to me that some kind of secondary screening may need to ... take place in certain instances, and hopefully in order to detect that kind of substance."

I am sadden because "you", the press, still give a stage to people like "peter king", who "shoot from the hip", spreading the most offensive crap, just to be heard. This person sadly appeals to the worst of our society, and "you" really should seek a higher, better, and productive thought. The if it bleeds it leads, if not, get a knife, technique that "you" continue to practice made our news media nothing more than Jerry Springer "reality" TV. Peter King represents the worst of America, and he knows that if he continues as he does, then most thinking people are turned off, and only those he can "confuse" with his crap will listen. Peter King chooses to mix a lie with the truth, which is worst than the truth. Why? Who cares... CBS, you can and must do better, and leave nuts like this for the "cesspool" of "reality new entertainment" such as FoxNews or other Limbaugh types. With Peter King on your program, I will go to another station, or turn the TV off. I call on all true Americans, who love the ideas of this great land, who are tired of being divided, and who choose to seek the better angles, to also ignore the Peter Kings, and programs that give guys like this a stage. There are serious times, and a news program should be about serious subjects, and serious, truthful people.

"Actually, have to agree with this one about visas. THAT is where this event went bad. Who issued the visa?"
--------------------

"Well...he COULD be talking about the fact that the US State Department gave this bozo a visa even though he is on the terrorist watch list..."

*************

The US State Department issued the visa in 2008.

The young man was not on a terrorist watch list in 2008.

The US did fail to coordinate with Great Britain concerning the bomber... they had denied him a visa.

This is a huge flaw in our security procedures -- we don't have effective, coordinated intelligence with other countries, it seems. Though the bomber was not "flagged" in 2008 and therefore got his US visa, when GB denied the same person a visa -- we should have had an immediate and serious "red flag" show up on ALL airline carrier ticketing systems.

Republicans like talking to the American People as if we were Two-Year-Olds. Thanks Congressman, Thanks for reminding Washington that we were attacked and thanks for reminding the American People that our enemy is dangerous. All those body bags from Iraq and Afghanistan just wasn't getting the message across.

I agree with King, this was a wake-up moment! I believe instead of more screening at all the airports. Anyone who is not an american citizen should only be allowed to enter the states at 2 or three major airports. visa's checked, there luggage checked then there bodies checked, if your name is on the watch list then your strip searched, if everything clears then your allowed to take a flight to your original destination. if this means profiling people to bad, i would rather have sombody mad about being searched, than aircraft with hundreds of souls going down because of and radical extremest

This guy King is nothing more than a partisan hack, using the favorite GOP scare tactics to go after Obama. Clearly something failed here. I think that screeners should emulate the Israeli strategies that have kept their air travel pretty safe, even if it involves more scrutiny of Muslim flyers. After all, the danger comes from radical Muslims who are willing to die to kill Westerners.

My favorite Israeli move is the use of bomb sniffing pigs to patrol for suicide bombers. The thought is Muslim extremists will be less likely to mix their body parts with those of a pig.

Would it be concidered non-PC if America promised to bury all killed Islamic terrorist with a half pound of Bacon?

Moron Gibbs, using as one of the administrations excuses, "there's over 580,000 people on the watch list"..are you kidding? I could set up a data list of names on an excel spreadsheet and plug in a search on one name and come up with that name in seconds. Either he's the dumbest press secretary ever, or thinks we're the dumbest constituency ever..Probably the latter, since we were dumb enough to elect his boss into office..lousy President but a great liar and teleprompter reader.

Well, Bush should be blamed for this. However, this time Rep. Peter King is also to be blamed. As one of the Republican rubber-stampers who supported every mistake Bush ever made, King needs to be replaced by the voters. We voters have a lot of "unfinished business" to take care of and we thank Rep. Peter King for reminding us. Millions of Americans are suffering from the consequences of Bush's assault on America. Rep. Peter King was part of that.

Blame Bush!!! Hey, my horse farted...Blame Bush!!!

When does it stop being blame Bush? You claim Bush was 100% responsible for not stopping 9/11, but 12/26 (over 3 months longer in office), Obama still isn't to blame...What freaking hypocrites.
by RespectMichael December 28, 2009 9:17 AM EST
When this administration fails...because they or their supporters can't take responsibility for anything..they come up with the same old drool.NO, who should be blamed for this? First and foremost the perpetrator..second the inept Napolitano..smiling while she's saying the system didn't fail(even she couldn't help herself as she attempted to do a snow job)..the warnings came just a couple of months ago..Bush had nothing to do with it..

Well, whenever there is any real issue or event of consequence on the table, you can count on Peter King to raise concerns--- with no back ground data, no constructive ideas for improvement, withself serving emphasis, with feigned indignation, and of little consequence.

Near, That's it, "there you go again, blame the messenger". Typical liberal, blame everyone else for their failed policies. If you're so much smarter than the "dumb Repug's and neocons", why would you ask us for our suggestions in the first place. We offered suggestions on the health bill, but they never saw the light of day. You wanted it, you got it, you own it.
by nearl451 December 27, 2009 11:44 PM EST
No. First, I am not a typical liberal - I am the epitome of liberalism -so bite me.

Second. I know Peter King. I have seen this idiot feign support for Hillary during the election with theonly motive of causing division.

Suggestions for Healtcare improvement -- - aside from tort reform, there were no constructive ideas from your side.

Typical neocon - got his rear handed to him - and doesn't even realize it aaaaand of noconsequence to anyone.

Anyone remember Richard Reid? The shoe bomber that tried to blow up a plane while Bush was President?

Sum total words given by Bush to assume the American people for that attempted attack - ZERO.

Only a simple minded dumb ass GOP whiner like Peter King would accuse one President of negligence while letting the prior President (and I use that term loosely for Bush) do the EXACT SAME THING.

Only difference is the Party. GOP - Got zero plans, the party of NO!!

The Obama bashing has taken over this thread. A nation this polarized does not deserve its freedom

We deserve our freedoms, but I have to agree we are extremely polarized. Just how polarized we are is displayed in your statement. You mention 'Obama bashing', but ignore the insults directed against former President Bush.
by ffoulkes-2009 December 28, 2009 3:48 AM EST
salmoc, Americans did come together after 9/11, however less than a WEEK afterward, the bashing began anew. I lived through it. Don't lie.
