M.D.: Had to Be Drugs that Killed Murphy

Authorities said Monday it appeared actress Brittany Murphy died of natural causes after becoming ill with flulike symptoms in the days before she collapsed in the bathroom of her Hollywood Hills home.

Celebrity Web site TMZ is reporting there were "large amounts of prescription medications" on the nightstand when paramedics arrived at her Hollywood home, and that Murphy was "complaining of shortness of breath and severe abdominal pain" in the week before she died.

"She always denied any relationship to drugs," US Weekly Entertainment Director Dena Sansing told CBS News. "She said she had never tried it. She said the strongest thing was Sudafed -- it wasn't her thing."

But at least one leading pathologist tells "The Early Show" he'd bet a lethal combination of prescription drugs was involved.

"It's possible, certainly" (that Murphy died of natural causes), Dr. Cyril Wecht told "Early Show" co-anchor Maggie Rodriguez Tuesday, "and usually, it will be some kind of a congenital heart condition. But in most of those cases, the patient will be aware that there is some heart problem.

"When you have a 32-year-old person dying suddenly, and especially a celebrity in Los Angeles, you can place your bet down that it's going prove to be a case of acute combined drug toxicity. And I bet you that this young lady tragically died in the same way that Michael Jackson did, and Anna Nicole Smith, and her son, Daniel Smith, and Heath Ledger -- a combination of drugs that had been prescribed for her, prescribed for her husband, for her mother, in some fictitious names, probably by doctors who are very, very quick to make available anything that celebrities want, sometimes using knowingly fictitious names.

"So, even though these drugs are, quote, legal, unquote, they are, many times, illegally obtained. And it's a tragedy. And it's being played out everywhere in America every day, and we only come to know about it when it involves celebrities."

What leads Wecht to conclude drugs were involved here?

"I am aware of some of the drugs that were found. One of them was a drug that was involved with Michael Jackson, Adivan. One of them was a drug that was involved with Anna Nicole Smith, Klonopin. Two of the drugs are pain relievers, Hydrocodone, which we frequently see in these cases, and Vicoprofen, a form of Vicodin. So, I guarantee you that, if the pathologists at the Los Angeles coroner's office had found something dramatic, like a heart attack, like a stroke, or like something of a definitive nature, would you have heard about it. The fact that they say that they're going wait for toxicology tests and it will take a couple of months, you can be sure that this is going to prove to be a case of acute combined drug toxicity. A tragedy."

Officially, Assistant Chief Los Angles County Coroner Ed Winter said to reporters that an autopsy had been conducted and officials were awaiting the results of toxicology and tissue testing before determining an official cause of death. It could take up to six weeks before a determination is made public.

Officials also interviewed Murphy's personal physician and examined prescription drugs taken from her home. None of the medications was illegal, reports said.

Paramedics tried to revive Murphy early Sunday, but she was pronounced dead at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. The hospital said she died of cardiac arrest.

The autopsy found no signs of trauma to the body of the 32-year-old star of "Clueless" and "8 Mile." Police say they don't suspect foul play.

Winter said Murphy's family reported she had been ill and that could have contributed to her death. He said he had no further details about the medication taken from the home Murphy shared with her screenwriter husband Simon Monjack.

i also believe that it had to be drugs that killed brittany. those medications she had are worse than a lot of illegal drugs out there. ativan and kolonapin are a lot of times used after coming down from coke or amphetamines to help sleep. also a dangerous combo with speeders. vicodin and vicoprofin are both narcotics, and both basically a weak version of morphine. of coarse they are not going to find any illegal drugs if there even were any. im sure the husband hid them. look at how bad anna nicole denied using drugs, but what did they find in the end. i have a feeling that this case will be similar. what a waste, use drugs(that includes alcohol) responsibly or dont use them at all.

You don't have to be rich or famous to be able to get your hands on drugs that can kill you and to have a "drug problem" if, indeed, that's what happened. The story is that a very good young actress and beautiful woman died before she should have. Tragic for her and her family, and a loss to those of us who'd have enjoyed her future work. No need to crucify her about it.

IF she had all those drugs, she is an addict. No one has all those narcotics (painkillers) unless they are addicted. Period. No one with a heart condition would be prescribed all those narcotics. Period.
But I say IF because I don't know if she had all those narcotics.
I am not going call her a drug addict but I am not going to say she was NOT a drug addict because I don't know.
People making excuses for her are no better than those accusing her.

"No one has all those narcotics (painkillers) unless they are addicted. Period." -- bubbadubba

You are wrong. The medications that were found in Brittany Murphy?s apartment were in her name and under the name of her husband and mother. You don't even know WHO was taking them, nor do you know how much or how often they were taken. Period.

Does that make us both menopausal?

oops-- sorry-- I am a Board Certified Psychaitrist and PhD Neurochemist-- and also in recovery from opiate dependence. Many of the meds listed by TMZ are dangerous in combination; I wrote a post on my blog about each of the ten meds, what they do, what they are likely prescribed for, and how they can interact, beyond the risk of respiratory depression in addiction for example. Some of them, e.g. fluoxetine, block metabolism of others at the liver, leading to high levels of other meds (like the biaxin) that can cause fatal arrhythmias. Anyone interested on a primer on each of the meds and how they dangerously interact, please check out my post at my blog about addiction--- there are three or four things that may have killed Brittany beyond the eating disorder or opiate addiction, although opiate addiction is such a common cause of death these days that it is always at the top of the list. Steve Tyler went into rehab for opiates today, by the way...

you are aware that a cardiac arrest is not the same thing as a heart attack, correct?
===========================================

That is correct. I was starting to confuse the two.

WebMD notes: "Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is a sudden, unexpected death caused by loss of heart function (sudden cardiac arrest). It is the largest cause of natural death in the U.S., causing about 325,000 adult deaths in the United States each year. SCD is responsible for half of all heart disease deaths.

SCD occurs most frequently in ADULTS IN THEIR MID-30s TO MID-40s [emphasis added], and affects men twice as often as it does women. SCD is rare in children, affecting only 1 to 2 per 100,000 children each year."

Sudden cardiac arrest is not a heart attack (myocardial infarction) but can occur during a heart attack. Heart attacks occur when there is a blockage in one or more of the arteries to the heart, preventing the heart from receiving enough oxygen-rich blood. If the oxygen in the blood cannot reach the heart muscle, the heart becomes damaged.

In contrast, sudden cardiac arrest occurs when the electrical system to the heart malfunctions and suddenly becomes very irregular. The heart beats dangerously fast. The ventricles may flutter or quiver (ventricular fibrillation), and blood is not delivered to the body. In the first few minutes, the greatest concern is that blood flow to the brain will be reduced so drastically that a person will lose consciousness. Death follows unless emergency treatment is begun immediately."

It seems, to the rag media anyway, that in this country a celebrity can't die from natural ciases. There just HAS to be a scandal.

look, a healthy 32 year old with no prior heart complications does not just suddenly die from cardiac arrest. it has nothing to do with the media, it has to do with people wanting to know about why she died.

Just for the record, Dr. Cyril Wecht never actually examined Brittany Murphy. His televised "tabloid diagnosis" is something highly unethical for a physician to be doing. Maybe he should check into the Betty Ford Clinic to be treated for his addiction to the celebrity news spotlight.

In in most of those cases, the patients won't get on the phone and tell Dr. Cyril Wecht all about their private business.

I totally agree with you! Any upstanding doctor would do this. Just another loser trying to bank on a tragedy.

I couldn't agree more. This comment from this "Dr" is completely absurd. He hasn't examined the patient, he has no informaition as to her past medical history and he claims she must have been a "case of acute combined drug toxicity."

Dr. Cyril Wecht of all people should know how harmful it is to bring accusations against people.

He barely escaped the slammer.
