Joseph and Mary in Bed Poster Causes Stir

(AP)  A billboard at a New Zealand church depicting a downcast Joseph lying beside Mary in bed and the heading "God is a hard act to follow" provoked more than the intended reconsideration of the meaning of Christmas.

The sign was defaced by a paint-wielding vandal just hours after it was erected Thursday outside the St. Matthew-in-the-City Anglican church in Auckland, and triggered passionate and sometimes angry debate on talk radio and the Internet.

Church vicar Archdeacon Glynn Cardy said the billboard was intended to challenge stereotypes about the way Jesus was conceived and get people talking about the Christmas story.

"This billboard is trying to lampoon and ridicule the very literal idea that God is a male and somehow this male God impregnated Mary," said Cardy, who described his church as having very liberal ideas about Christianity.

"We would question the Virgin Birth in any literal sense. We would question the maleness of God in any literal sense," he said.

On the billboard - painted to mimic the fresco style commonly used in church murals - Mary and Joseph are in bed side-by-side. Joseph is looking down. Mary, looking heavenward, appears sad. The caption reads: "Poor Joseph. God is a hard act to follow."

Auckland Catholic Diocese spokeswoman Lyndsay Freer said the billboard implied the Virgin Mary and Joseph had just had sex and was inappropriate, disrespectful and offensive to Christians.

"We would see a billboard like that being used by an anti-Christian group to actually poke fun at the divinity of Christ," Freer told National Radio.

Christ's conception was a profound theological question and the billboard would not "give rise to any intelligent discussion on the birth of Jesus," she said.

Many messages on the church Web site attacked the image, while others defended it.

"This billboard and your 'sermon' is a sacrilege," one visitor, identified as Karen, posted.

Another, identified as Andrew M, wrote: "I for one think this is an excellent billboard. Challenging and thought-provoking. Just what it was intended to be."

Cardy said he understood that some people were upset by the image but said he was disappointed the billboard had been defaced. He said he did not intend to take it down.

What is the remarkable aspect of this story: No riots. No crzed mobs killing radomly- as we saw with Muslim world reaction to modestly funny CARTOONS. He who says all religions are the same, are wrong. Am I wrong ?

My opinion about this, it is clever, but belongs in the NEW YORKER MAGAZINE, not in front of a church. But I am not going to mod crazy over it.

Jesus called God "The Father" many times so any notion that God was not "male" is a total joke and goes against the Words of Jesus.
God loves men and women equally and expects us all to treat each other with respect also so any so called church that says that a male God could not be fair and just towards women is not a church it is a man hating cult.
This billboard does not offend me because brainless and hate filled people have a mental problem and we can't hold crazy people responsible for their their actions and this billboard is simply pathetic.

Santa Claus, The Easter Bunny and God are also known to be male. The Tooth Fairy is usually thought of as female. We can debate their orientation though to distract people from the truth they are all fairy tales.

If Joe was killed by an axe murderer then a Christian would say it must of been time for Joe to go. God must have a better plan for him. But the Axe murderer is of the Devil. OK...who set this situation up? God must of made a plan with the Devil to make it all happen because God had a better plan for a good guy and the Devil needed a sinner.

You really should learn about Christianity and GOD "Before" you speak. Real Christians know that GOD leaves man to his own devices. Why do you think GOD allowed Satan to continue existing after he broke GODS laws!!!
Because he needed somebody to tempt man to go against his will. Satan exists for that reason alone. People keep saying "Why did GOD do this to us"? GOD didn't, Satan did.

This billboard was put up by a church, trying to get people to ponder the meaning of Christmas. But Christians, being so full of "love" and "tolerance", just couldn't stand it! How Dare anybody ask them to think about their religion, or to question any aspect of their dogma!

Christians, en masse, appear to be a group of ignorant and hysterical imbeciles.

As a Catholic I am deeply offended by this display. I want to respect all religions and I would like us all to respect each other.

Ok, if we evolved from Monkeys, then why do we still have Monkeys?

A species evolving into several other species doesn't automatically mean the eradication of the original species.

Clearly, evolution is real though. If it isn't, then someone should try to explain why "god" waited to "create" the Golden Retriever until the early 1900's.

If you want to believe we evolved from monkeys, go ahead.

So even if we DO believe in the "virgin birth" thing, would it be so far-fetched to think that Mary and Joseph might lie down next to each other?

"So even if we DO believe in the "virgin birth" thing, would it be so far-fetched to think that Mary and Joseph might lie down next to each other? " - Skruffy1

It never ceases to amaze me how utterly stupid and ignorant most "Christians" are! According to the Babble, Mary and Joseph had ANOTHER son, James, a brother to Jesus. In fact, the Babble describes 4 brothers of Jesus! So, obviously M + J were "getting it on". But these "Christians" are so ignorant of their own fairy tales that they take offense at the suggestion that M + J ever even slept near one another! The ignorance of these people never ceases to amaze!
