Clinton Jabs Iran over U.S. Hikers

(AP)  Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said Monday that Iranian charges against three detained Americans are "totally unfounded" and appealed anew to authorities in Iran to release them.

Clinton said the three were in no way involved in any questionable activity and were simply hiking near the Iraq-Iran border when they allegedly crossed an unmarked border. Her comments came after Iran's foreign minister said the three had "suspicious aims" and would stand trial. Iranian officials have said earlier the trio is suspected of espionage.

"We consider this a totally unfounded charge," Clinton told reporters. "There is no basis for it. The three young people who were detained by the Iranians have absolutely no connection with any kind of action against the Iranian state or government."

"In fact, they were out hiking and unfortunately, apparently, allegedly, walked across an umarked boundary," she said. "We appeal to the Iranian leadership to release these three young people and free them as soon as possible."

The Americans - Shane Bauer, 27, Sarah Shourd, 31, and Josh Fattal, 27 - were detained after crossing the border from Iraq on July 31. The three graduates of the University of California at Berkeley had been trekking in Iraq's northern Kurdistan region, their relatives say.

They have been held in Tehran's Evin prison, where Swiss diplomats who represent U.S. interests in Iran have visited them twice.

Earlier Monday, Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said the three would be tried but would not say when proceedings would begin.

"They will be tried by Iran's judiciary system and verdicts will be issued," Mottaki told a news conference in Tehran, without elaborating. He said the three were still being interrogated.

If you're going to go on holiday to an active warzone then you deserve any and all consequences that come of it. I don't know if anyone remembers the story about the FL teenager, Farris Hasaan, that decided to see for himself just what war in Iraq looked like and stole over to the Middle East to have a look around. He said he wanted to do his homework and see for himself just what things were like in Iraq and going the "extra couple thousand miles" into an active war would be the ultimate way to show how sorry he is for being a priveledged, sheltered American. All the news agencies that reported on his secret trip over there laughed and thought it was just a funny little story of poor judgement by a naive young man. That's beyond poor judgement. That's 100% American arrogance. He got out totally unharmed, and as far as I'm concerned, that was too good an outcome for him. These hikers are showing the exact same thing, 100% American arrogance and entitlement. Nothing but a pure narcissitic idiot would think it's ok to go traipsing about a country in the midst of fighting for its own identity, and one that is split so many ways over its feelings about Americans an abacus is needed to keep up with all of it. And not only did the hikers go to a country the US government has one of the highest travel warnings on, they chose to go walking near the border of a country that's just downright opposed to just about all things American. It doesn't matter if the border was unmarked or not, they were close enough to be in questionable territory, just like those reporters that ventured over into North Korea. I don't have a lick of sympathy for any of them; I can't say I hope they get killed because I surely do not, but if that's what comes of their escapade then they took that consequence on themselves when they made plans to go into the fire.

Iran is also holding another chip that I notice is missing from this article: The disappearance of one of their nuclear scientists who went on a Haijj to Saudi Arabia. Iran is claiming the US is holding him. No admission from Iran that this person holds confidential nuclear secrets about the Iranian nuclear program either.

The charges against the hikers may be unfounded, but why were they hiking there in the first place? If 3 Iranians had illegally crossed the US boarder, what would we do? Would we assume them to be terrorists? Spies? Would we slap them on the hand and send them right home? We've been pushing our "Do as we say not as we do" foreign policy for so long that we don't know anything else. It's like 3 teens playing with a loaded gun and we blame the maker of the gun if something happens. I hope they are returned but they had no business being there.
