Mysterious Spiral Light in Sky over Norway

(CBS)  A light appearing high in the Arctic sky early Wednesday morning baffled many people who saw it, and sparked lots of comments.

Just before dawn, the small blue light appeared over Norway. Small at first, the light grew into a spiral, then disappeared into what appeared to be a black hole.

In the northern community of Trondelag and on a Norwegian military base, cell phones snapped, video cameras rolled and bloggers got busy.

CBS News correspondent Sheila McVicar pointed out the Arctic sky is no stranger to atmospheric phenomena. The northern lights and the seasonal flight of Santa are just two, McVicar said.

However, this phenomenon apparently lies across the border with the Russian military and another failed missile launch, McVicar said, noting that a respected Russian daily newspaper reported that the third stage of a sophisticated Bulava intercontinental missile had failed. And Thursday, the Russian Defense Ministry reported that a test launch of a Bulava missile from a submarine in the White Sea had failed.

Space experts point to the spiraling of this missile as it malfunctioned as an explanation for the shape seen over Norway. The halo, experts claim, was produced by missile fuel, McVicar said.

CBS News space analyst Bill Harwood, added on "The Early Show" the missile failure seems like a plausible answer.

"Rockets can fail in spectacular ways," he said. "And when you look at vehicles up out of the atmosphere, where there's no pressure constraining those contrails, it gets dramatic."

Harwood said the Norwegian light looks like a failed mission off Cape Canaveral in 1989.

"As soon as the missile came out of the water, the nozzle went hard over and the rocket just started spinning end over end," he said. "... This video looks very similar to that and that would certainly be my assumption as to what went wrong."

Harwood added the spinning motion "clearly indicated" the failure of a solid rocket motor.

The failure is embarrassing for Russia, McVicar remarked. Of 12 known tests, she said at least seven have been unsuccessful. McVicar added the Bulava, a high-tech new generation weapon capable of carrying warheads up to 5,000 miles, may be on the verge of being scrapped.

anyone every stop to think that with it being so high in the sky that the wind up there would have made it impossible for smoke to create that perfect spiral and for it to stay like that for more than 3 minutes? you ppl forget that the air up there isn't stationary we have something in the atmosphere called the jet stream that keeps the air moving. and another thing if it was a missile why the hell are they launching it early in the morning when it was still dark out. doesn't make any sense if you think about it really. im not saying i know what it was but to all the ppl who think they know the real explanation most of the explanations that have been given really sound stupid when you think logically.

The enormous, spiral light with its glowing centre, seen over Norway on 9 December 2009, has excited and baffled thousands of Norwegians including astronomical experts. What does it mean?

On 12 December 2008 Share International Foundation announced that a large, bright ?star?-like object would soon be seen in the sky. It is a sign heralding the imminent appearance of Maitreya, the World Teacher, on His first television interview, which will take place in the USA.

The ?star? is really one of four enormous spacecraft placed around the world. Since December 2008 numerous sightings of the ?star? have been reported on YouTube and television news programmes. Share International magazine has received hundreds of photographs showing the ?star? in a variety of stunning colours and shapes.

The huge spiral manifestation over Norway is an extension of the work of these spacecraft and is irrefutable evidence of their reality. Our information is that further such manifestations are planned for the near future.

Your explanations are all wrong - - this spiraling light was Obama spinning up his Oslo acceptance speech for the Nobel Prize.

The Chinese are very interested in this technology of failed ICBM's. They have been looking for a new form of celebratory pyrotechnics to manufacture and export.

The Chinese...well, they're in the big leagues, now. Seem to get it right the first time, too.

Poor us.

While it's source is still worthy of debate. This excuse is weak at best and they are counting on the ignorance and gullibility of the masses. Deadened by idiotic pop culture and desperate to believe any story that restores their false sense of safe certainty.

Do a search on failed missile/rocket test videos. Watch as many as possible and suddenly the story they are attempting to feed, becomes idiotic and dubious at best. It is after all pretty stunning how the "failed" "rocket" managed a virtually perfect spiral. What a kawinkydink and how very neat and clean of it,,, in it's "failure". How charming it decided to be so very controlled and precise in it's failure.

I do not know what it was, but a a failed rocket of any known or typical type it does not seem to be. Especially when direct comparisons are made and all video and photo's from dif angles of the event are considered.

My thoughts exactly...it seems that "space debris" is the "swamp gas" of the 21st century...also, did you notice that the video on MSNBC has been replaced with a blurred, grainier version? It seems the stunning video from yesterday has been replaced with a poor-quality version. Hmmmmmmmmm..................
