48 Hours: Justice in the Heartland

CBSNews
(CBS)  You can drive a long way in Stanton County, Kan., and rarely see another soul.

In tiny Johnson City, the county seat, the locals trade gossip at places like the County Fare Café or the aptly named Rinky Dink Drive Inn owned by Mary Hart.

"It's a very close community. Things can divide it and cause hard feelings. Things can draw it close together," explained Hart.

It's the kind of place that doesn't welcome strangers easily. Deb Golub knows. She moved her family here from California after her husband died; her son, Mike, was 16.

Johnson was her boyfriend, Jim's, hometown, but it was all new to Deb.

"We're newcomers. We've been here since '94. I'm an outsider. My son was an outsider," Deb told "48 Hours Mystery" correspondent Susan Spencer.

Mike's sister, Crissy, stayed in California, but made a point of being part of her brother's life.

"I remember him calling me… about falling out of relationships and likewise. I remember confiding in him. And he was so good about that. And I think that we really connected," she said.

Initially, the local teens, like Danae Meurer, didn't know quite what to make of the newcomer they nicknamed "California Mike."

"At first, I just thought he was a smart-ass. I mean he was kind of full of himself and cocky and walked around tellin' these stories that none of us believed," Meurer said. "And then we asked his mom and found out that most of them were actually true… And it just grew on me. It didn't take very long 'til you were laughing as hard as he was when he was telling the stories."

Shannon and Steve Morris soon realized that behind that cocky exterior was a heart of gold.

"Mike would make you feel good about yourself," Steve said. "Mike was a good guy. He'd give you the shirt off your back."

"He was funny. We were best friends and stepbrothers and he was a very smart guy," said Beau Hines, who also called Mike a hard worker.

Mike was a skilled mechanic, who spent long hours repairing equipment for his boss, Eric Kramer.

"…dependability was really good. Anything you put that kid to, he would figure it out, he was pretty good," said Kramer.

Eric Kramer on Golub: In February 2009, veteran homicide investigators Paul Ciolino and Joe Moura spoke to Mike Golub's boss.

In 1995, Mike met another outsider - a young woman named Shannon Albers, from Montana. From the start, Mike was smitten.

"They seemed to get along very well at the beginning," Deb said. "It was 'Let's go party, let's go have fun…' It was a fast and furious thing."

But the honeymoon didn't last.

"The only time Shannon ever talked to me is when she wanted to complain about Mike. And that's it," said Shannon Morris.

"Michael never made enough money. She always complained about money," said Deb.

"She'd make comments like 'she has caviar taste on a hot dog budget,'" Hines said. "And she'd say that in front of all our friends."

The one bright spot was the couple's son, Mikey - his father's pride and joy. Deb said her son was an excellent father. ""He loved his boy. He was just a natural-born dad."

But having Mikey didn't save the relationship. At its lowest point, Shannon even called the cops, alleging that Mike had choked her. They arrested him.

"They had a fight," Deb explained. "And he had his hand on her throat, holding her away from him."

The charges were later dropped, but Shannon soon moved out, taking Mikey with her.

"He was in love with her and he was devastated when they split up," Meurer said. "That was a hard time for him."

Then, at the age of 24, Mike Golub had a heart attack - apparently the result of a genetic defect. It almost killed him.

"After his heart attack, he got scared," Meurer explained. "And he and I had a number of conversations that God had given him a second chance and that he needed to pay attention to that."

Friends said that brush with death was a turning point. So was a new woman in his life, Brooke Wilkerson.

"Young, fun - they went skydiving together… she brought out a lot of that life back to Mike," said Meurer.

In 2004, Mike and Brooke had a son, Kamryn. By all accounts, Mike Golub finally had grown up. His life was full.

"Mike turned into the young man that I would [have] been proud to call my son," said Hart.

"He was in love with Brooke and he loved his son, Cameron, very much and wanted to be the father that he never had," said his sister, Crissy.

"They were really happy and Mike was talking marriage, he was talking [about] proposing to her," added Meurer.

Mike's former girlfriend, Shannon Albers, also had moved on and up. She married Chad Floyd, who happened to be from one of the richest and most powerful families in Johnson.

According to Hart, "Everybody knows the Floyds, whether it be through farming or setting around a coffee table at the local coffee shop."

"Their name is so prominent here. They're very huge in farming here. They've been here for years," said Deb.

When asked what the attraction was between Chad and Shannon Floyd, Shannon Morris replied, "It was money. Period. She's a gold digger."

She wasn't out of Mike's life; they still were fighting - now over Mikey. And now Chad was involved.

Deb said Mike wanted more time with his son, but "Shannon and Chad weren't willing to share."

Mike was only allowed to see Mikey every other weekend. And despite the bickering, the arrangement seemed to work - for awhile.

But on May 20, 2005, Mike Golub drove away from work a little before 6 p.m. to pick up his son. He's not been seen since.

"And as soon as Steve got off the phone with Beau and told me he was missing, the very first thing I said was, 'You don't think Shannon did something to him?'" Shannon Morris told Spencer. "That's the very first thing I said."

I agree with mick7744, The reason justice wasn't served is because the jury was afraid of retribution from the defendant's family. Plain and simple. What a shame that Michael's family not only lost Micheal, but, never got the much deserved closure they should have gotten from a guilty verdict.
What a sad, sad story.
I send all the best wishes and hopes for Michael's family. I also hope that one day his son is able to know the truth and be with his Dad's family.

My husband and I watched the show tonight and all we had to say at the end was disgusting. That trial should have never been held in that town. Those two were guilty. It was clear as day! You could see it on their faces! They make me sick! They are murderers and their day will come.

Okay. Here is your guy not in the middle of the whole small town perspective, politics and etc.I don t live in Johnson but I know most of the people involved in this situation. I also have been reading the Bible lately too.I am going to address a few things here. I am a fairly educated person w. a college degree also. I know the Floyd's somewhat by business dealings and such and have overheard some of the community prospective from both sides, those who like them and those who don't. The things I have heard have been before the incident and after about all parties... I worked with Mike also.I have no relationship with any of the parties now so what I say has no effect on me or anyone I know. I look at this matter from right in the middle but not so much that either side could effect my overall opinion or the FACTS that I know about either side, Floyd's or Mike and his family. Now on with the FACTS and the fact of what some of the opinions were based on respectively.

Mike- Guy I met working and from time to time hung out with outside of work. We were n t best friends but we definitely knew, liked each other, and respected each other. I knew
Mike to be somewhat of a wild guy at times. He might have dabbled in drugs and w.e. from time to time and drank heavily at times too. It was on his own time. His family was important to him as well as his friends. Work was also a major priority in his life. I never once saw him out of control or unable to handle what he had on his plate for responsibilities. He was generally nice and fair with everyone he met that I knew of. I also have a wife that had a working relationship with him who knew him as a very knowledgeable worker and a hard worker.

The Floyd's seem to be people who kept to themselves about their own matters and dealings. They were at times harsh to some of the help they had that were from another ethnic background. By this I mean I think they had little respect for immigrants and it showed by their dealing with them. To most other people though they seemed fair. By this I mainly specify Chad's father and other presiding family members in the farm.

I think think that the Floyd's hurt themselves the most when they did not make any statements. All of the circumstantial evidence seems to point in their direction as well as motives. As for the "some drug dealer got him theory" I don think that is probable. This part of the state does n t deal with that kind of issue. I m no expert but I have been in Kansas most of my life and Stanton County is not high on the murder for drug related issues. I think if I was guilty I would n t want to say anything to everyone. I think most of us feel that way. BUT if I was innocent I WOULD PROCLAIM MY INNOCENCE TO EVERY PERSON KNOWN. I'm not passing judgement on anyone though. I think the evidence in this case speaks. I do think there were MANY flaws in the investigation as listed in other comments. I also for one would have a few questions for the guy who changed the window glass. The child should have been interviewed. I don t think that mike would just up and leave his family and friends and not resurface somewhere at some point in this amount of time missing. As stated the evidence, the way this was investigated, the knowing of both sides for me leads me to believe there was foul play. What was involved we are all unsure of.

Now about the comment that was made about The Bible being written by man. If you have ever read that book (and I hope you have)it is the work of man INSPIRED BY GOD. There are things in the Bible foretold that could NEVER have been known to happen by man alone. The spirit creatures out there unseen by the human eye working to the fulfillment of Gods Kingdom will soon be evident to you. If you read the Bible and applied all that was in it. Your life would have meaning. People who call themselves Christians in one country and kill in the same denominations in another country is not CHRISTIAN at all. Some denominations read the Bible and preach it. Some for get to do what they practice. Sin is a disease and it KILLS EVERYONE. Everyone SINS. Not reading The Bible and following its instructions the best you can is like going to the Doctor for a deathly sickness and him prescribing you medicine and you not taking it. Read the Bible. Make your own decision. IT MAKES TOO MUCH SENSE to be from man alone. Everything said in it is happening. Best wishes.

I am from Kansas and in some places of my dear state the good ole boy system works. And yes the Floyd's most likely did away with Mike to keep custody of Mike's son. I don't agree with it at all. It should have been moved to another county where the Floyd's influence was so strong.

JUDGEMENT DAY...((New Testament) day at the end of time following Armageddon when God will decree the fates of all individual humans according to the good and evil of their earthly lives)..

When I was little I was taught the 10 Commandments that come directly from the bible... .. One comes to mind when i read all these comments bashing the Floyds. It being THY SHALL NOT COVET.. All you people who are saying the Floyds run the town because their money you are JEALOUS and you are "coveting." (Which is WRONG.. jusr incase you didnt understand what I jsut wrote!)

Also it says that we will be judged by the evil in our lives on earth... Are drugs no longer evil? Is a meth lab okay now?!?! So instead of bashing the Floyds you all should read your bible and get more in touch with God and the TRUTH than just running your mouthsto make you feel important and sorry for yourselves!!

And just suppose that, by a stretch of the imagination, that we 'all' don't believe in what you are preaching. The Bible is a collection of MEN'S writings, collected by MEN, translated by MEN, collated by MEN, all to the express purpose of controlling the masses. You need to read something along with the Bible, something that will show you that all those stories in that book are actually much older than any of the manuscripts used to compile the Bible. All those stories can also be found in the history of multiple 'religions' and almost ALL of them predate the KJV, or any of the manuscripts claimed to be 'God's writing.'

Why don't police inspect all open wells to find the body? The body has to be somewhere..

No one obviously is looking at this case without bias. Every comment agrees with only what was broadcast. The statements made by the victims family should be considered slanderous and I would sue for libel if I were Floyds. The story only showed one side where the Floyds were made out to be wealthy tyrants pushing their power on people and controlling the town. So they are americans and bought their own land and put the money they made to good use. All I saw was a bunch of bitterness even considering the circumstances there was no other side to the story other than the glimpses at the fathers drug abuse and the new wifes affairs. There was no mention of his past because it is wrong to defame the deceased but the same standard should be held for the accused. To me there was alot of comments made by the family that were obviously small town rumors. They did say he was on meth and cocaine at one time? The statements about the Floyd family are just outrageous. There was little talk on the show of one of the defenses arguments that Mike had been doing something with drugs...whether he was just informing or dealing he was obviously in contact with those types which in my mind says reasonable doubt. Just because everyone wants to run to city hall and scream about justice and burn a cross in the suspects yards these days just shows how people get carried away in a mob to point the finger and not be able to look at the case objectively. I support the Floyds simply for the reason that they have to deal with the scrutiny on a day to day basis while the real people who murdered mike may still be slingin their dope. For anyone that wants to say HA they'll et theirs! just remember you do not know the whole story based on a slanderous one sided partial story. Another thing that pisses me off is the person that says the Floyds and Wingers own this and that... so what? They own some businesses. Farm ground, feedlots, and a bank. They only gained power by being influential leaders in the community, not by being the "mafia" or tyrants. They are very very nice people and I think to slander their name so frivolously is from your own jealousy. The idea that they are some mean and powerful jerks is just rediculous! To say that that woman was paid to say that is rediculous also. You should all stop being bandwagon hoppers and think of the fact that you only heard the bitter mothers side of the story.

I think it is so sad that all of these people want to live a lie! Producers hand picked the pictures, and people's statements just to infatuate the story. And yes, it is ture that judgement day will come. However, it will also come to those who ENVY a family simply because of what they have worked for, and have so much hate that they would wish something bad on them just so they could feel better about their own lives. Envy & Jealously are just as much of a sin as Murder....think about that.

Stories like this are infuriating. Johnson, Kansas has made a mockery of our justice system. I hope the lives of Shannon and Chad are miserable after the airing of this story. I find it interesting that the Floyd's are supposed to have all this money and their son is a truck driver????? I guess having money in Kansas and having money in Southern California have a completely different meaning. Also the house Shannon & Floyd lived in was a dump.... Okay, enough bashing. Golub family - I will pray from this day on for justice. The trial should never have been held in a town the defendants family own. I guess the people of Johnson have no integrity. People are convicted on less than what was presented by the prosecution. It is clear who the guilty party is. Hang tough - karma will prevail on this earth and the next.

This is just another example of the Golden Rule...those with the gold get to make their own rules.

Kind of like how America was victimized (and is still being victimized) by the outlaw Bush administration.

Those with the gold get to make the rules.

You are a true idiot! Your comment "Kind of like how America was victimized (and is still being victimized) by the outlaw Bush administration. " is totally irresponsible, stupid, low brow and indicates what kind of a person you are. Your comment has nothing to do with this case or the facts. Bet you are just an uneducated POS who crawled out from under their rock, has plenty of time on their hands to make these ridiculous comments because you don't have a job or much of a life!
