Amanda Knox Found Guilty of Murder

American college student Amanda Knox was found guilty of murdering her British roommate and sentenced to 26 years in prison early Saturday after a year-long trial that gripped Italy and drew intense media attention.

Her Italian ex-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito was also convicted and sentenced to 25 years. They were also convicted of sexual assault in the 2007 murder of Meredith Kercher, a 21-year-old student from England.

The verdict was reached after nearly 12 hours of deliberation just after midnight, reports CBS News correspondent Allen Pizzey.

Knox was visibly distraught after the verdict, Pizzey reports. Knox began weeping and murmured, "No, no," then hugged one of her lawyers. Her family said they were disappointed.

There is an automatic appeal, but that process could take as long as two years, Pizzey said.

Minutes after the verdict, the 22-year-old Knox, who is from Seattle and the 25-year-old Sollecito, were put in police vans with sirens blaring and driven back to jail.

Prosecutors had sought life imprisonment, Italy's stiffest sentence. Courts often give less severe punishment than what prosecutors demand.

The American's father, Curt Knox, asked if he would fight on for his daughter, replied, with tears in his eyes: "Hell, yes."

"This is just wrong," her stepmother, Cassandra Knox, said, turning around immediately after hearing the verdict. Her family had insisted she was innocent and a victim of character assassination.

One of Knox's lawyers, Luciano Ghirga, was asked if she was desperate.

"Yes, I challenge anyone not to be," he replied.

A group of local youths who gathered outside the courthouse shouted insults and "assassin" at the Knox entourage as they walked in to hear the verdict.

Knox and Sollecito were charged with murder and sexual assault in the slaying of Kercher more than two years ago. All three were studying in Perugia in Italy's central Umbria region at the time.

Silence fell on the packed and tense courtroom as the jurors walked in. Kercher's mother and sister cried at the verdict.

"The sentence is fair and satisfactory for the family," said their lawyer, Francesco Maresca. "It was a heartfelt sentence. There is deep suffering on all sides."

A juror, a woman, also looked like she was crying after the verdict.

Kercher's body was found in a pool of blood with her throat slit on Nov. 2, 2007, in the bedroom of the house she shared with Knox. Prosecutors contended the 21-year-old Leeds University student was murdered the previous night.

Maresca acknowledged that the defendants' loved ones were also pained.

"There is deep suffering on all sides," Maresca said, adding that the victim's family planned to hold a news conference late on Saturday.

Knox and Sollecito had been jailed since shortly after the slaying.

Relatives and friends in Seattle clasped hands as they watched TV and waited for the verdict. Her uncle, Mick Huff, cried, "Oh God, no" when it was announced.

Other friends buried their faces in their hands and shook their heads.

"They didn't listen to the facts of the case," said Elisabeth Huff, Knox' grandmother. "All they did was listen to the media's lies."

Madison Paxton, Knox's friend from university, said: "They're convicting a made-up person," Paxton said. "They they're convicting 'foxy Knoxy.' That's not Amanda."

The prosecutors contend on the night of the murder, Knox and Sollecito met at the apartment where Kercher and Knox lived. They say a fourth person was there, Rudy Hermann Guede, an Ivory Coast citizen who has been convicted in the murder and sentenced to 30 years in prison. Guede, who is appealing his conviction, says he was in the house the night of the murder but did not kill Kercher.

The prosecution says Knox and Kercher started arguing, and that Knox joined the two men in brutally attacking and sexually assaulting the Briton under "the fumes of drugs and possibly alcohol."

Throughout the trial, prosecutors depicted Knox as a promiscuous and manipulative she-devil whose personality clashed with her roommate's. They say Knox had grown to hate Kercher.

During the trial, the most intimate details of Knox's life were examined, from her lax hygiene - allegedly a point of contention with Kercher - to her sex life, even including a sex toy.

Knox said Kercher was a friend whose slaying shocked and saddened her.

Defense lawyers have described the American, who made the dean's list at the University of Washington, as a smart and cheerful woman, at one point even comparing her to film character Amelie, the innocent and dreamy girl in the 2001 French movie of the same title.

That is the film Knox and Sollecito say they were watching at his home on the night of the murder, where they say they smoked marijuana and had sex. Knox said she went home the next morning to find the door to the house open and Kercher dead.

The prosecution maintains that a 6½-inch knife authorities found at Sollecito's house could be the murder weapon; they say Kercher's DNA was found on the blade and Knox's on the handle. However, defense lawyers argue the knife was too big to match Kercher's wounds and the amount of DNA collected was too small to determine with certainty whose it was.

The defense maintained there was not enough evidence for a conviction and no clear motive.

However, prosecutor Manuela Comodi said violent crimes can lack a motive. "We live at a time where violence is purposeless," she told the jury.

Knox gave contradictory versions of the night of the slaying, saying at one point she was home and had to cover her ears to block out Kercher's screams and accusing a Congolese man of the killing. The man, Patrick Diya Lumumba, owns a pub in Perugia where Knox worked. He was jailed briefly but was later cleared and is seeking defamation damages from Knox.

Knox later contended that police pressure led her to initially accuse an innocent man.

How can you put faith in a Legal system, that let 1200 Italian War Criminals go free, and shelter and honor them, plus a Legal system that harbor and sheltered high Nazi SS officials. 15 nations wanted Italy to hold War Crime Trials, But they just shoved it under the rug! Like they have shoved a lot of other things under the rug. It seems Italy is still using the same system that Mussolini did! Everything in the Knox case is basically circumstantial, and wouldn't get past a hearing in a Court of Justice in America. In America, you are Innocent until proven guilty by a Jury of 12 independent citizens chosen by LOT. In Russia, China, and Italy I guess, guilty until you bribe the judges!

I bet, considering your attitude here, it had nothing to do with Americans but it was just about you.
If you are a jerk and you are American, there are more chances people will be against you for the former than the latter. And this applies to any country you may visit.

I have read many of the posts outlining all of the facts that are certainly relevant and damning. But, none of it really proves the scenario that the prosecution sold the jury. It is just as likely that the reason Knox and Sollecito appear guilty is because when they discovered her body they knew that they would likely be the primary suspects that police would focus on. There may have been plenty of people who knew that she and the victim were not on good terms and their proximity alone puts them in immediate suspicion. As a result, they may have panicked and took actions to try to remove themselves from the crime scene. They may have even suspected eachother's involvement. The reason that their stories kept changing is that they were in fact lying to try to cover up for themselves and eachother in a crime that neither one of them was actually involved in. It is quite possible that Amanda did spend some time at the victim's apartment the night of the murder. But, is that something that a scared young girl would tell the police? Or would she assume that information would implicate her? Once the lying started, there was no easy way back to the truth. Because, when you think about it logically, to tell the truth, they would have to start by admitting that they had lied. Once, they have done that, nothing that they say would be credible. Everybody has jumped on this notion of a hasish fueld sex game gone wrong. It is a salacious fantasy but... Well, let me just say that in my personal experience and observations, hashish does not fuel violent behavior. However, it does often cause the user to think irrationally and it can foster a tremendous amount of paranioa. It seems to me that what we are actually seeing here are the irrational actions of a couple of frightened and paranoid (rightfully so) young persons who took a wrong turn early in the investigation and could not find any way back.

The Sicko Prosecutor in that Perugian courtroom, not unlike several prosecutors all over this world, is guilty of making up lies against innocent people. In his case, he already is being examined for past deeds, and his particular perverted fantasy imaginationscape here in this case against Amanda and Raffaela is so disgusting, so over the top, so destructive to decent human lives, that he himself should face charges and imprisonment. Is anyone looking into suing him? As for what was described as odd behavior by Amanda and Raffaela, look into what the police asked her to do, look into how the police held her hostage in a room for a 40 hour interrogation, leading her to say things under threat, physical abuse, terrorization, and creating scenarios for her to describe "what if?" which they knew they could use against her and twist around later, and she did not. Most victims of these types of interrogations say much more to implicate themselves than Amanda did. She held up very well under these conditions which break so many to the point where they "confess" to get out of that room and away from the hostile interrogators. Their minds are blown, they are terrified, and lied to. These laws must change so that interrogators can not tell lies and can not use tactics of torture until people who have never committed past crimes are manipulated to suit them. I saw a sweet girl and a kind boy comforting each other while they waited for the police to tell them more information, where others out there see something sexual. I do not understand how I can share this plane of existence with so many nasty minded people, so ready to attack others. Meredith was murdered horribly by a very sick creep named Guede. End of story. His past reveals all of those traits towards break-ins and attacks with knives held to the throats of the weaker-bodied woman.

NO LIES, ONLY FACTS THAT THE DEFENSE WAS UNABLE TO DISPROVE:

Amanda's and Meredith's blood DNA was found on the knife that killed the poor Meredith

The combined Amanda's and Meredith?s blood DNAs were found on the bathroom sink where presumably Amanda washed her hands off Meredith?s blood.

The knife that killed Meredith belongs to Raffaele and both Guede?s and Raffaele?s DNAs were found on Meredith?s bra. Testing of the knife showed that it had been washed with bleach.

Raffaele bought two bottles of bleach immediately after Meridth?s death.

Chemical analysis revealed bloody footprints in the house, matching the shoes of Knox and Sollecito, despite the testimony by Knox and Sollecito that they had not been in the house.

Amanda and Raffaele lied multiple times changing continuously their alibi.

Amanda also blamed for the murder a person she knew was innocent after just one hour and forty five minutes of questioning, trying to protect Guede, one of the participants to the killing.

It is also untrue that all Italian media was against Amanda. Some were in favor, other against. Lying continuously and accusing an innocent man did not help.

Finally, a jury of 8 people found all the arguments of the defense lawyers on DNA, knife, etc. FALSE. The defense was unable to disprove any of evidence and explain all Amanda's and Raffaele's lies.

Using all these false arguments will not help Amanda, they will only prove to the rest of the world Americans do not like a fair trials.
