Congressman Wants Secret Service Review

(CBS/AP)  A New York lawmaker says he wants a review of the Secret Service after a Virginia couple was able to get into Tuesday's White House state dinner uninvited.

Democratic Rep. Edolphus Towns, who chairs the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, says the party crashing "compromised the safety and security of the president" and undermined the nation's confidence in the agency.

Michaele and Tareq Salahi , shaking hands and speaking with him at the function.

Towns has asked for a briefing on the matter next week.

The incident has sparked just as much concern from Republicans such as Towns's fellow New Yorker Rep. Peter King, the ranking Republican on the Homeland Security Committee.

"To think that two basically wackos were able to work their way in and be standing with the president of the United States," King told CBS News. "They could have grabbed any blunt object that was in there. They could have grabbed a fork or knife off one of the tables."

The Secret Service says it was "deeply concerned and embarrassed" that the Salahis were able to get in without an invite. The agency has acknowledged its officers never checked whether the two were on the guest list before letting them in.

A former Secret Service director told CBS News Correspondent Kimberly Dozier he's been told there will be a thorough internal investigation to determine who let them pass.

"It's difficult to know exactly whether or not this individual unilaterally decided to disregard the process the procedures in place," Ralph Basham told Dozier. "Or perhaps the confusion, the East Room, the entrance there caused part of the problem."

The Salahis' lawyer will only say, "My clients were cleared, by the White House, to be there. More information is forthcoming."

Not, so far, from the Salahis. At their Virginia home, a note says they'll be back Monday.

But their neighbors are talking about a couple they say spent too much time, and perhaps too much money, climbing up the Virginia social ladder of parties and polo matches.

A string of tradesmen claim they were never paid after the couple's lavish wedding, which was posted on YouTube.

"We had many occasions when tow trucks and other people have come looking for them because they want to be paid," horse stable owner Karen Frantz told Dozier.

Bravo Media has confirmed that Michaele Salahi is being considered as a participant in the upcoming "The Real Housewives of D.C."

The tin foil hat crowd say this is a liberal elite and mainstream media tactic. They just aren't concerned over security lapses during this administration. The right wing blog crowd just doesn't seem to be concerned over the serious lapses in security for President Obama. Extrapolate...

It is every congressman's duty to keep government functioning to the best of it's abilities. I really am concerned that only one has raised this issue and made it to the headlines.

We are in wartime, and President Obama deserves to have protection.

I'd like to see a complete investigation and review of not only Homeland Security, but this whole Administration.

Sure, a congressional investigation (review) of this trivial matter. How about investigations of corruption and tax evasion of congressional representatives? Now there is a positive move.

The problem, according to the Daily beast, resides with Desiree Rogers, the social secretary, who was socializing and not watching the list. If they do a congr'l investigation, she's going to be the first person they call.

Oops. Forget the investigation. We can't have a sister take the heat. Blame it on the honkey secret service.

These two, should have the book thrown at them. What a great reality show that that would make; lifestyles of the imposters and failures, live from the U.S. Penitentiary at Leavenworth, KS.

Yeah, there ya go! Must keep the commoners away from the elite top rungs of our society! They got past security, so that is on security, not them. If they had done this with nefarious intent, THEN, PERHAPS there would be a reason to raise the alarm and toss 'em in prison, but they obviously didn't. I can't get over how cowardly our nation has become.

She seemed to be very confident she could get in; even brought along a camera crew. This episode seems to be well-planned, well-executed. IMO there's the obvious question of whether they had inside help previously arranged?? I think this is more newsworthy than it seems; we're just lucky it was a blonde wannabe who pulled it off rather than somebody more sinister. Altho I'm sure the people at that party are very annoyed. More than annoyed. The photo of her all cozied up close with VP Biden is especially outrageous. Talk about nervy! I wonder what he thinks? I wonder what his wife thinks? -- I think these two people are overdue for a dose of true reality.
