Dogs Rescued from Mo. Puppy Mills Fly East

(AP)  More than 50 dogs rescued from puppy mills in Missouri are flying to Long Island in the hope of finding loving homes.

The dogs were taken by bus Thursday to Chicago, where they were given a rest break and special Thanksgiving meals.

On Friday morning, Pet Airways was scheduled to fly the dogs from Chicago to New York's LaGuardia Airport. They will then be taken to the North Shore Animal League America in Port Washington, N.Y., where they will be put up for adoption.

Missouri launched an aggressive campaign last summer to investigate and prosecute unlicensed dog breeders.

In September, more than 100 dogs were removed from what officials called an unlicensed puppy mill in mid-Missouri where dogs were living in filthy conditions.

I t isn't enough that we take the dogs. We the people should be allowed by law to take all the property and sell it to aid in the recovery and recover cost of the operatrion of saving the animals. The operator of the puppy mill should be financially destroyed down to thier last penney, become a burden on the welfare sytThat would really show them pale faces.sem forced to sleep in the streets and be allowed to sign up for all the public benefits programs in the country.Thier children get free health insurance and they get ssi and medicaid. That would show them pale faces.

I was so glad to read this story! I am thankful that at least "some" of these despicable "puppy mills" have been shut down and the precious pups rescued. My husband and I are a retired couple with three doggies that are our children and bring us so much joy. It is a pleasure to interact with them and take care of their needs. They indeed give us all of their "unconditional love" every moment of every day.

People who spend money rescuing animals while other people are in need of help, make me sick. What a bunch of societal degenerates!

By rescuing these dogs to go up for adoption, people are helping people. An animal especially a dog or cat can increase a person quality of life. They provide unconditional love.

This is the high society Hamptons bunch, who could care less about "the little people".
The head guy there takes $300,000+ salary a year of these "charitable donations". Nothing but a way for socialites to get their pictures taken for a sham charity. Nothing more.

Puppy mills make me sick. But its people who continue to go to these "puppy stores" that help fuel these breeders. These dogs are from puppy mills. Also, people who continue to buy so-called "designer" breeds (labradoodle?) are just buying fancy mutts. Before your kids begin whining about wanting a dog because they saw this fancy mutt from some Hollywood celebrity, please stop and think about it.

I sooooo agree with you!! Until dogs cease to be a commodity and are viewed as living beings with specific needs that they are helpless to meet without humans that love them, puppy mills will continue their abominable activities. Until people realize a mutt is a mutt is a mutt, people will continue sell these mutts to a willing public. If you WANT a MUTT, go to your nearest animal shelter and ADOPT one. It costs a lot less and you do a good thing for an animal that was about to be killed because no one wanted it. If you want a pure bred dog, go to a reputable breeder and get one. If you can't afford the price tag, ask about rescue animals of that breed. Most will know of a good rescur group for the breed. And the animal will have already been spayed or neutered.

But, if you want a pure bred so you can also breed dogs if you like, have some class, compassion and basic HONOR, and don't do it for the $$. Do it for the love of the breed. You can't make $$ breeding unless one of two things is true: You are an extensive licensed breeder who shows your dogs well and earns real awards or You are a puppy mill. There simply isn't any $$ in breeding dogs outside of those two modles. And any GOOD dog breeder will tell you, they don't make much $$ because most of it goes right back into properly caring for their dogs... whom they likely love and rotate through the family residence.

Twelve years ago we rescued a dog just 15 minutes away from being put down. She has been the best dog I have ever owned and has brought years of companionship to our family. A furry treasure!
