Kennedy: Bishop Barred Me From Communion

(AP)  Roman Catholic Bishop Thomas Tobin has banned Rep. Patrick Kennedy from receiving Communion, the central sacrament of the church, in Rhode Island because of the congressman's support for abortion rights, Kennedy said in a newspaper interview published Sunday.

The decision by the outspoken prelate, reported on The Providence Journal's Web site, significantly escalates a bitter dispute between Tobin, an ultra orthodox bishop, and Kennedy, a son of the nation's most famous Roman Catholic family.

"The bishop instructed me not to take Communion and said that he has instructed the diocesan priests not to give me Communion," Kennedy told the paper in an interview conducted Friday.

Kennedy said the bishop had explained the penalty by telling him "that I am not a good practicing Catholic because of the positions that I've taken as a public official," particularly on abortion.

He declined to say when or how Tobin told him not to take the sacrament. And he declined to say whether he has obeyed the bishop's injunction.

The paper said the bishop's spokesman declined to address the question of whether he had told Kennedy not to receive Communion. But the bishop's office cast doubt on Kennedy's related assertion about instructions to state priests.

"Bishop Tobin has never addressed matters relative to public officials receiving Holy Communion with pastors of the diocese," spokesman Michael K. Guilfoyle told the paper in an e-mailed statement.

Kennedy did not return messages left on his cell phone by The Associated Press, and his staff refused to make the congressman available for comment. Tobin's spokesman told the AP that the bishop would not comment on the issue.

Church law permits Tobin to ban Kennedy from receiving Communion within the Diocese of Providence, which covers Rhode Island, but he cannot stop Kennedy from receiving Communion elsewhere. It was unclear whether bishops overseeing Washington and Massachusetts, where Kennedy's family has a seaside compound, would issue similar bans.

Kennedy could appeal the decision to officials in the Vatican, but the hierarchy of the Catholic church is unlikely to overturn a bishop, said Michael Sean Winters, a church observer and author of "Left At the Altar: How Democrats Lost The Catholics And How Catholics Can Save The Democrats."

"It's really bad theology," said Winters, who opposes abortion. "You're turning the altar rail into a battle field, a political battlefield no less, and it does a disservice to the Eucharist."

The dispute between the two men began in October when Kennedy in an interview on CNSNews.com criticized the nation's Catholic bishops for threatening to oppose a massive expansion of the nation's health care system unless it included tighter restrictions on federally funded abortion.

Kennedy voted against an amendment to a Democratic health care plan sought by the bishops. But he voted in favor of a health care plan that included the amendment he opposed.

Tobin, the spiritual leader of the nation's most heavily Roman Catholic state, demanded an apology from Kennedy after learning of his remarks and requested a meeting.

"While I greatly respect the Catholic Church and its leaders, like many Rhode Islanders, the fact that I disagree with the hierarchy of the church on some issues does not make me any less of a Catholic," Kennedy wrote in a letter to Tobin, agreeing to a sitdown. "I embrace my faith which acknowledges the existence of an imperfect humanity."

Their meeting fell apart. While Tobin called it a mutual decision, Kennedy accused Tobin of failing to abide by an agreement to stop discussing the congressman's faith publicly.

Tobin followed up with a biting public letter published in a diocesan newspaper.

"Sorry, you can't chalk it up to an 'imperfect humanity.' Your position is unacceptable to the Church and scandalous to many of our members. It absolutely diminishes your Communion with the Church," Tobin wrote.

In subsequent interviews, Tobin said Kennedy should not receive Communion like other Catholic politicians who support abortion rights. Still, the bishop stopped short of ordering Kennedy not to receive the sacrament.

Tax exemptions? Evil Bishops above God? Waaaay off subject. As a nondenominational Christian, I just wonder if anyone has been denied communion for other non-christian ideas and beliefs. Perfect example is the death penalty. Should proponents of it be denied communion? How about those who oppose health care for the poor or for children? How about proponents of war? Should anyone who voted or is for the invasion of Iraq be excommunicated? How about the very rich? (shouldn't they give it to church and charity?) Homosexuals? How about those like me who believe in homosexual rights though I do believe homosexuality is against God? I really don't understand how the church can single out a person/people on any single issue. We ALL are God's children and we ALL fall very much short in the eyes of GOD in both our actions and ideas. I believe in church and democratic government, but I certainly believe church and politics don't mix.

Why would Americans allow these sick catholic perverts to influence elected officials?!

ASSOCIATED PRESS Thursday, November 26, 2009
DUBLIN ? The Roman Catholic Church in Dublin covered up decades of child abuse committed by priests because bishops wanted to protect the church's reputation at the expense of victims, an expert commission reported Thursday after a three-year probe into previously secret church records.

Abuse victims said they welcomed publication of the probe into the mishandling of 1975-2004 child-abuse cases in the Dublin Archdiocese, home to a quarter of Ireland's 4 million Catholics. But they said government and church leaders still had far to go to compensate for past wrongs.

The government said the investigation "shows clearly that a systemic, calculated perversion of power and trust was visited on helpless and innocent children in the archdiocese."

In May, the government published an investigation into decades of child abuse in Catholic-run schools, workhouses and orphanages. That probe also found that thousands of boys and girls suffered rape, beatings and mental abuse by members of Catholic religious orders.

I agree that Matthews was out of line with the way he acted towards Tobin, but my problems is that Matthews just wasted an interview going nowhere.

Matthews spent 10 minutes discussing the issue of abortion with Tobin, and OF COURSE the Bishop is pro-life. Any person with common knowledge of the Catholic religion would already know this.

This is proof why MSNBC is consistently last in the ratings. If I had the chance to interview the Bishop I would want the story of the relationship between Tobin and Kennedy?

My questions would be:

Bishop, why do you think Kennedy would publicize this story now, since your request was made over two years ago?

Has their been any recent interactions between you and Mr. Kennedy?

Why did you make this request, after so many years of the Kennedy family being pro-choice?

This is the real heart of the story...come'on Chris get off of your soapbox and get the story!

If the Catholic Church wants to run a theocratic style government, then maybe they should move their church to Afghanistan and change their name from the Catholic Church to the Christain Taliban......

She would have been so much better for our country. Obama is ruining this country.

My God, newyorkmom, what is it that you would not blame Mr. Obama for? First and foremost, Mr. Obama never claims to be a devout Muslim. I have heard him say he is a Christian. But he is a Christian who does not want to impose his beliefs on others. Hence, he supports Choice. He wants every family or any person(s) to make the decision of continuing with a pregnacy or not to the individuals involved.

Secondly, what would you have him do with Iran? Start another bombing run and spend billions of dollars, we don't have, for another war? For your information, Iran is a sovereign entity and has the right to develop any weapons it deems necessary for its survival just like Israel. Though I think Iran is stupid to follow that course, it is its right to exercise.Like Pakistan, India and other Countries that are developing nuclear weapons to exalt themselves as world power, Iran is better of laying the necessary foundation to be coming an economic power, where her population has enough to eat and modern amenities to enjoy life to the fullest.

Thirdly, Mr. Obama is not responsible for the deficit. The deficit started long before he tookover the Government. Remember, Mr. Bush started his Administration with surplus and surplus forecast for the future.Within six months of his Administration, the forecast started turning negative - deficit. So, you are less than disingenuous to blame Mr. Obama with the deficit. You may not know, but Mr. Obama's every action has been to correct the fundamental problem of the deficit to get the economy going good again.

Lastly, by the Constitution of the Country, we are required to provide fair justice to everybody accused of a crime. It is customary in this country for the accused to face his accuser. There is no one judicial system for Citizens and another for Non-citizens. This is a unique characteristic of the American system that is envied by other Countries. Why should we renege or go back on this unique characteristics of our Country? These accused, no matter their nationalities, should be tried according to our judicial system, Period. So, rather than insulting the President you should be proud of him for doing it the right and only way.

Another point, try not to be too prejudicious in your rants about Mr. Obama. As for revote, you are out of luck. You are very wrong about Mr Obama, even Sec Hillary Clinton praises him on the way he handles the presidency and his duties as the president. Obviously, you don't seem to like the man and to you everything that is happening is his fault. You don't seem to see the light of the day. it's a shame.

WORTH REPEATING:
by lewtwohotmail November 23, 2009 1:09 AM EST
The most important point here is the fact that the agents (The Roman Catholic Church Bishops) of a sovereign foreign power (The Vatican) are attempting to control the United States Federal Legislative process via acts (or threats of acts) against the personal well being of the members of that legislature.

The actions of the Roman Catholic Bishops and those of Thomas Tobin in particular call into question the positions of the Catholic members of the Congress. Can these individuals fairly represent ALL their constitutes when their immortal soul is at peril if they fail to vote according to the hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church.

The issue here is not abortion but the manner in which the Roman Catholic Church is trying to force its agenda and religious dogma on the entire nation.

I don't believe you have a case, the point here is that a religion has a position on a certain issue which an elected official does not share - thereby resulting in the religion withholding a ritualistic ceremony which causes the elected official to whine about it.
