Rules Differ for Palin at Military Bases

(CBS/AP)  Updated 2:51 p.m. Eastern Time

Two military bases, two different sets of rules for Sarah Palin.

The U.S. Army will allow the media limited coverage of Palin's appearance at Fort Bragg but bar reporters from interviewing her or her supporters on the post, officials said Thursday.

At Fort Hood, meanwhile, officials say there will be no such limits.

"We're treating this like any other celebrity book signing tour," Bruce Zielsdorf, the deputy public affairs officer at Fort Hood, told Fox News. "It's part of selling a book -- you go different places and you're popular and people come get your autograph."

Texas' Fort Hood, of course, was recently the site of a shooting rampage that left 13 people dead. Palin's December 4th visit to promote her memoir, "Going Rogue," was reportedly planned before the tragedy.

Fort Hood officials reportedly view Palin as a private citizen, not a public official, and will thus allow troops and their family members to take pictures with her. Were Palin an elected official or engaged in a campaign for office, they say, those photos would not be allowed.

Fort Bragg officials take a different view of Palin, and have decided to treat her more like a political figure.

A Fort Bragg spokesman initially said the Army would ban the media from Palin's book signing next week, fearing it would turn into political grandstanding against President Barack Obama. After The Associated Press and The Fayetteville Observer protested, Col. Billy Buckner said the post would permit restricted access.

A small pool of reporters will be allowed to view and document the event but will be barred from the interviews. The public will be allowed.

Buckner said the more limited setup will allow reporters their right to access while preventing the appearance from turning political - something that officials believe would violate policy.

"If media are present, they can capture the imagery of what's going and sort of the ambiance of what's taking place," he said.

Fort Bragg, which is base for some 35,000 soldiers, does not hold many promotional events, especially not with political figures. Officials said they worried that media coverage would turn the appearance into a chance for people to express political opinions "directed against the commander in chief."

"The main reason is to stop this from turning into a political platform," said Fort Bragg spokesman Tom McCollum. "There are Army regulations that basically prohibit military reservations from becoming political platforms by politicians."

Palin has agreed not to give a speech, McCollum said. Palin will sign her new book for people and will not stop to pose for photographs, officials said.

Palin began a promotional tour this week for her memoir, with plans to travel through several states that were key to the 2008 election, including North Carolina. She made several stops in the state while campaigning on the ticket of GOP presidential nominee John McCain.

McCollum said it's not clear if military officials consider Palin a politician but noted that she has been critical of Obama while promoting the book. She said in an interview with ABC News that Obama should provide more troops to Afghanistan.

"It frustrates me and frightens me - and many Americans - that President Obama is dithering around with the decision in Afghanistan," she said.

Palin doesn't appear to be using her book signings to promote her politics. She spoke briefly to supporters in Michigan on Wednesday, saying it was great to be there and not mentioning Obama.

At least one person in the crowd yelled: "Palin power. 2012, yes."

She should not be on any military base. She is not an elected offical, is not a contractor offering services to the governement and not a miliary member or dependent.

It's like a USO show. She shows some thigh and 10,000 troops get a little aroused. It's all good.

Sarah Palin is going to be the 45th President of the United States of America! The Republicans will nominate her because if they don't that assures a Democratic victory. The GOP can't afford to have the right vote split.

Yeah, and after that I'll get out my shovel so I can go over and spread some salt whereever hell froze over. Americans, as a rule, are pretty stupid, but they aren't THAT stupid.

Palin will be in the headlines more than Obama will now because she gets more popular everyday. Obama lost his touch and Palin has now taken over. That's the good news for us. I hope she does run for president even as an independant. The democrats and the media fear her. Palin knows that Obama can't run the country and so do thousands of American people. They are finding this out every day. He doesn't know what decision to do first and last. And when is the "change" going to take place that he promised in his campaign and you people fell for it.

There was a lot of talk about Pres. Obama's 3AM phone call. Sarah had her own also. With her eldest son fighting for American's right to call Sarah, hillbilly, trailer park trash, and every other vile name, Sarah went to bed every night with the possiblity her 3 AM phone call was from the military, letting her know if her son had been hurt,or worse...

If your calling Palin trailer park trash are you speaking for yourself. If you are a college student you might as well because the media states there is a big problem of drugs and booze in the dorms. How aboout that. Plus boys and girls sleeping together. If that isn't trashy what is. And some of the younger set getting abortions. So when your talking about Palin look around you.

I'll bet Palin didn't even know these bases existed until a couple of weeks ago.........

Apparently she knows more than you that's why she was a mayor, governor and VP. Now what do you do for a living? Most of the college students today will never see the millions she is making and they will be lucky to get a job.

I love Rush because he is smart to the dumbodems. He knows exactly how corrupt and underhanded they are and that's what they don't like about him. Its also possible the republicans will win back the house. Obama can't run this country and housespeaker Pelosi and Reid are a big joke. We are in the biggest mess ever and it isn't all Bush.

Isn't the NY City trial of the 9/11 islamic terrorists a political grandstanding by Obama,Holder and the democrats against Bush/Cheney,the US military and the CIA ? This trial in NY instead of Gitmo is an attempt by Obama and the democrats to divert the attention of the American people from the failure of Obama, Holder and the democrats to prevent the worst islamic domestic terrorism in the homeland at Fort Hood since 9/11.

Well, it wasn't until the Republicans started making political hay out of the whole thing. Kinda like how the Democrats did Sarah a solid by keeping her in the media.

I saw a poll the other day that something like only 1 in 4 poeple favor Palin. What can't the media get that and drop her? She is irrelevent and everyday she is in our faces in the news.

The media can't and won't drop her because she is a polarizing political figure.

Love her or hate her, when Sarah speaks...
by maxcoffee-2009 November 20, 2009 6:49 PM EST
Yeah... I saw the same poll. Then the next day on Fox I saw a poll that said more and more people were in favor of Palin. As to which is true... I do not know. I tend to think that the 1 in 4 poll to be more trustworthy. But polls can be made to say anything.

The military's not immune to the craziness.
_______________

I know..right...I mean asking your commander in chief to prove he's met the constitutional requirement to command, is soooo crazy.....especially, since he refused to provide proof which was sufficient for these soldiers....crazy, just crazy wanting a commander that actually followed the constitutional requirements to be in that position...just crazy

(ps: I'm not one of them)
==================================================================

Well there's accepting proof and then there's denying said proof by constantly moving the goal posts or erecting new ones so the field of play looks like a disjointed menagerie of metal forks all askew. Of course the players of this game are on some perverted Quixotic quest willing to charge the latest and greatest goal post, each new one so disfigured they don't even resemble goal posts anymore.

I'm sorry, what what this game again?
