Israel Hits Gaza Tunnels, Weapons Plant

(CBS)  Israeli aircraft struck a weapons-manufacturing facility and two smuggling tunnels in the southern Gaza Strip on Thursday, in response to recent rocket attacks on Israel, the military said.

Palestinian security officials reported no injuries.

Israel went to war against militants in Hamas-ruled Gaza last winter to quash eight years of rocket and mortar fire that terrorized southern Israel and killed 18 civilians.

More than 1,400 Palestinians were killed in the war, and since it ended on Jan. 18, the attacks have decreased sharply. According to the military's count, 270 rockets and mortars have been fired at Israel since the three-week offensive ended on Jan. 18, compared with more than 3,300 in 2008.

But Israel says weapons and weapons-making components still reach militants through tunnels under Gaza's border with Egypt. And sporadic fire continues, including a rocket attack Wednesday that caused no injuries.

The Israeli military said in a statement that it would "respond to any attempt to disrupt the calm in Israel's southern communities."

Israel should secure the border with Egypt. It is Israels border with Egypt until the Palestinians in Gaza reach a peace accord and statehood.

18 in 8 years? Where did you find that figure? According to this BBC article (who do not "brown nose" Israel, I would think), 45 Israelis were killed in 2005, 60% less than in 2004. Just those two years give a total of about 100.

Anyone who can read this article and still stick up for the Israelis must have some sort of financial motive behind their brown-nosing. There is no way that 18 dead in 8 years could warrant a war that kills 1400. The Israelis are merely warmongers that want the US to continue to feed them with our $$$ and our weapons so they can continue to assault their neighbors and cause further anger among the other countries in the Middle East.

The Gazans have created a one-party sharia dictatorship that would be resisted by any adjacent secular republic. Endorsement of Gazan policies is an endorsement by either a Jihadist fellow-traveler or (as in Lenin's terms) a "useful idiot". We know that doesn't happen on the CBS News board.
