(AP)  The wife of U.S. Sen. Richard Lugar, R-Ind., has been charged with drunken driving and hit-and-run after police said she hit a parked car in northern Virginia.

Fairfax County Police say an officer stopped 76-year-old Charlene Lugar Wednesday evening at a McLean intersection after seeing damage to her car and smoke coming from the hood. Police later determined that she also hit an unattended parked car about two miles away from the traffic stop.

Both charges are misdemeanors.

In a statement, the senator said he is thankful that no one was injured and that he and his wife are "deeply sorry and embarrassed that this accident has occurred."

A trial is scheduled for Jan. 8 in Fairfax County General District Court.

COME ON! You liberals over-exagerate everything! How much damage to a parked car can a broom do?

A first-time drunk driving conviction should result is permanent revocation of one's driver's license.

That would make people start looking for designated drivers, or a cab ride home.

What's going on with these drunk drivers? First, John Kerry's daughter, Alexandra, and now Charlene Lugar?! Unbelievable...

There's a couple of mistakes here.
She must have forgotten that she's supposed to do her DUI driving on private estates during parties.
And the county patrolman (deputy sheriff) forgot he's suppose to let relatives and friends of politicians and ex-politicians commit their crimes without stopping them!

But, deputy...that's OK...on behalf of the citizens...WE thank you for your 'mistake'! Because those people aren't or shouldn't be 'above the law'!
