900-Pound Man Dies after Cut from Chair

By
CBSNews
(CBS)  A man weighing around 900 pounds died after he had to be cut out his chair in home, reports CBS affiliate WSPA-TV from Greenwood, S.C.

Authorities say he was stuck to a chair for nine months.

Daniel Webb, 33, died after being taken from his home on County Farm Road Wednesday. Webb had been in a medical chair for nine months, covered in sores and human waste.

Authorities say Webb died from cardiac arrest.

Webb hadn't left his house, or even walked for almost nine months. His wife Ada Webb says he hurt his knee and could no longer walk. He sat in a Lazy-boy for the rest of his life. "If he would have had the proper care we tried to get for him back in March this would have never happened," his wife said during an interview Thursday afternoon.

Ada Webb says she and her husband tried to get disability and insurance but could not and she says she didn't know where else to turn. "I only hope something good comes out of this because it was so unnecessary," Webb said. "They say he went into cardiac arrest but I say he died of a broken heart."

Emergency Medical Services Personnel says morbid obesity has become a real issue, and now they carry special tools onboard.

They had to use those tools for Daniel Webb.

Daniel Webb helped found the True Christian Fellowship in Westminster and was still an associate pastor.

Why have charges not been filed against this guy's wife? The idea of the government neglecting him is nonsense. SHE neglected him. She left him in a chair for 9 months, for goodness' sake! She kept feeding him vast quantities of food and left him to rot in his own excrement. Why is she not going to jail for such awful behavior?? Why on EARTH is she being allowed to look like a victim? Shame on CBS for not painting her as the horribly neglectful person she must be for letting her husband die in such a disgraceful way.

To emalkire "if you have any other ideas for me present them but don't say i'm whining when I'm informing."

I don't know for sure if you are whining, informing, or making excuses. One thing is for sure, if your body does not metabolize certain foods quickly and efficiently, you will gain weight. Some foods are just bad for you - fried food, sugary food, potato chips, most fast food, etc. - stay away from all that.

The real secret is to eat fewer calories in a day than you burn that day. It takes about 1800 calories a day to maintain 170 pounds. Move around as much as possible.

The 900 pound guy got that way because he ate too much, stayed in that chair and eventually died. Whoever kept bring him food should be so ashamed of themselves. My guess is it was his wife, now she is a single mom with a baby, just because she fed the guy to death. Everyone agrees that is a terrible thing that could have been prevented.

For those of you people so intent on hating: GET A HEART. Yours is cold and dead. I feel for your families. You, obviously, know nothing of life and its vagaries.

There are many people in this country who do not know about nutrition. If one does, it is incumbent upon that person to share their knowledge. Try volunteering for a food bank. Reach out. Help. Read "Younger Next Year," by Chris Crowley and Dr. Harry Lodge. Check rules 6 & 7: Care. Connect and commit. Read the Dalai Lama's work. Find your heart before it's too late.

Fat people have long been made sport of by fools posting anonymously in Usenet in a group called soc.support.fat-aceptance. I speak up for the regulars in this group and for that I am a target that is harassed on-line and in real life. I know first hand about how cruel these idiots can be. Don't believe me? Do a Google.

How did they pay for the volume of caloric content it would require to put 900 pounds on this guy? He must have been pokin' down the groceries constantly. That had to cost a thousand a month just for HIS food--and they couldn't afford to get a sore knee checked? Did he have a job? Did she, and if so, who's been taking care of the kid? How did the entire neighborhood ignore the smell of this guy slowly rotting to death?? There's a LOT more to this story that would be helpful to know. What do we get instead...?

We know he was a Christian--as if that explained it all.

Thanks, CBS news. Maybe next time you could 'photo-shop' Sarah Palin's face into that picture and really make your elitist pals giggle.

Fat people tend to be a commodity representing the last safe prejudice. You would be suprised how cruel some people can be and when they pass away, they are blamed for their own demise and bidden good riddance. This family lost someone they loved. Let them keep their dignity.

I don't think this is the problem. I mean, sure, not eating is a solution to obesity but this is a bit like killing a patient with a flu so he won't get pneumonia. The point is that it SHOULD NOT be required to pay too much attention to food. In those 100-year old baseball photos you mention - I bet none of those people paid attention to what they ate or how they ate. Same thing abroad: in e.g. Europe people don't pay any more particular attention to food than in the US. There must be another, much more fundamental reason why people remain thin over there while Americans get fatter and fatter. My opinion is: tainted food supply. There simply can be no other explanation. All first-time visitors to the US notice that "food here is terrible". I suspect two ingredients are particularly suspect: corn syrup (instead of real sugar) and growth hormones in meat sold in US stores. Neither of those are used in Europe and I believe growth hormones are actually banned there. I'm not sure about genetically altered food but, again, IIRC it's banned in Europe and the only exception I think is in Spain where a certain type of genetically engineered corn is allowed but only for feeding pigs. What happens is that growth hormone probably screws up normal growth patterns in children - that's probably why adults who emigrate to the US tend to remain thin but their children - despite the same genes - get fat. Unfortunately, that's what you get if you allow only money, lobbies, and nothing else to dictate your food supply.

This guy was obviously on a self destructive binge. Maybe the only way to control it would have been to cut off his food supply, but the rhetoric from the "fat acceptance" crowd doesn't help people like this. Neither do those who claim that people who can't afford fresh fruits and vegetables are doomed to obesity; this is nonsense. Look at 100 year old pictures of the crowds at baseball games; most of these people didn't eat healthy diets, but they ate less of everything. Same goes for people who live in countries where food costs more. The first thing authorities should do when people get too fat to manage their lives (or let their kids become obese) is take their children away and require them to get sterilized. This is like a disease that should not be allowed to be passed on from one generation to the next.

Heres something the wife could have done....stop feeding him. I would have told him to get his lazy ass up and get it himself if he was hungry. I also like the part where he is part of a church. It must be a great place to be Sunday but no other day...fellowship...LOL I see they really helped their fellow man.

People like this are disgusting excuses of humanity. Lethargy and gluttony aside, these fat, worthless, non-contributing members of society neither deserve our pity, nor do they deserve our sympathy. When one of these worthless pieces of garbage gets to this point, the classic defenses usually pop up out of nowhere: it's not his/her fault they're big, they had a bad childhood, it's the fast-food companies' faults collectively, etc.

The tough part to swallow, even before the Health Care Reform measures in Congress right now, is that if you DID end up as obese and worthless as this "person", you could be declared DISABLED, and that would make that person eligible for Welfare, Disability, Medicaid, etc. So...in essence...you treat your body like a trash disposal, and don't worry, the American taxpayer will take care of you.

To hell with that!

Whether it's drug, alcohol, having too many kids, obesity, etc...if YOU CREATE THE CONDITIONS THAT NOW CAUSE YOU MISERY, YOU SHOULD BE ELIGIBLE FOR NOTHING. Zero. No help. No aid. YOUR FAULT.

As Americans get fatter and fatter, this will happen again. And Diabetes will continue to affect more and more.

We're the true victims, not these circus freaks that have no self-respect.

Likewise, if you stop over eating you lose weight. Your body cannot sustain any weight if calories are restricted, it will lose weight. You can literally not make something out of thin air. To maintain 900 lbs. you would need to consume 6000-12000 calories a day depending on activity/metabolism, not a normal calorie intake for anyone unless you are a Minnesota lumberjack & swing an axe all day.

You know people like you make me sick. do you know what his genetic disposition is. maybe its in his genes. As the wife said he was injured and couldn't walk. lets see you try to do something after a knee injury that puts you in a wheelchair. you might want to read the article all the way through before you post something so heartless and cruel. People like you are just Jack a**es with no understanding of the situation.I'll bet if you ended up in that situation you wouldn't be saying these things.

You cannot get to 900 pounds by being lazy and overeating.

This clearly involved genetics.

It is a great tragedy for his family that because so many people judge that there is something mentally, instead of physically, wrong with anyone who is obese, not only don't people like this get the help they need, but they are kicked in the teeth with insults, as is all too clear from reading many of these posts.

"You cannot get to 900 pounds by being lazy and overeating. "

Seriously? That is precisely how one gets to weigh 900 pounds, eating more calories than one is burning.
by NorthernIllinois November 23, 2009 5:53 PM EST
Are you kidding??? 900 pounds isn't genetic. It's a result of too many calories, not enough moving around. This entire family is fat, they eat too much of the bad stuff. Get real.
