Providence Poet Wins National Book Award

A Providence poet has won a National Book Award for his work.
Keith Waldrop, who lives in Providence and has taught at Brown for more than 40 years, was recognized at a New York awards ceremony Wednesday night for his "Transcendental Studies: A Trilogy." The phone rang unanswered at his office Thursday.

Other winners include Colum McCann for fiction and T.J. Stiles for his biography of Cornelius Vanderbilt.
Waldrop has published more than a dozen books each of his own poetry and of translations. His first book in 1968 was shortlisted for a National Book Award.
His latest book presents three linked poem sequences.
