"Steeple Man": Accident Made Life Better

By
CBSNews
(CBS)  Michael Williams is being called "The Steeple Man" after his car was crushed by a 12-ton church steeple when a tornado ripped through in Shreveport, La.
The steeple landed on Michael's car, pinning him inside. Firefighters worked nearly an hour to pry him from the wreckage.

Michael was badly hurt, but he said on "The Early Show" it was a "miracle" he made it out.

"I think that in the very first few seconds that this happened, a decision was made by a power greater than myself that I was meant to be here -- that I was meant to survive this," he said.

Michael said the first thing he remembers after his car was crushed was seeing emergency workers running toward him.

"It looked like a scene out of a movie," he said. "Their coats were flapping, they were running in slow motion. And they surrounded me immediately. And I knew I was going to be all right from that moment on. "

Michael's wife Judy Williams said on "The Early Show" that this has been one of the "darkest times of our lives and one of the most luminous."

"I've said we've had the worst luck and the best luck," she said. "I am so eternally grateful to God for the miracle, to our friends who have supported us."

Judy said every day she tells Michael he's her hero.

"I'm so grateful that he is still here," she said.

"You're my hero, too," Michael told Judy on the broadcast.

When Michael sees the images of his car and the steeple, he said he remembers how much room was left for him in the car - "just enough left to be curled into a little ball."

"I was protected and shielded from this," he said. "And when I do look at (images of the steeple), it brings it home for me that I have so much to be grateful for. I think that this will change my life. … I'm a lucky person, and I've got a really good life."

"Early Show" co-anchor Harry Smith added that Michael is still in 24-hour care, but he's now living at home. In a couple of months, Smith said, Michael hopes to be able to start to walk again.

Actually - Michael Williams gets it! As an EMT for 25 years, I realized long ago that there is a higher power that determines whether one lives or dies. The rescuers can do everything perfectly but the patient dies. And then there are those miraculous rescues like this one!

"I realized long ago that there is a higher power that determines whether one lives or dies"

If you really believe this then there is no point in the rescuers doing anything is there? If the "higher power" has determined they will live then they will live...if they determined that they will die then they will die.

So he is "eternally grateful" to God for throwing one of his steeples on him and then letting him live. Hmmmmmm....

You are clueless about Christianity, but you insist on trying to ridicule it. FYI, Satan has free run of the earth and doesn't mind hurting or killing to make GOD look bad because people like you blame 'every bad thing that happens to people on GOD'.
Quit talking about things that you know 'NOTHING' about!!!!
I survived a 70 mph head on crash without seatbelts or airbags. I never got a scratch. Go Figure...

"I survived a 70 mph head on crash without seatbelts or airbags. I never got a scratch."

So how come Satan didn't make you die if he's so powerful?

Less than 2 miles from my house a sweet innocent 5 year old little girl was kidnapped. She was sexually abused and then murdered and her body dumped in the desert like garbage.

Why did God save you and Michael Williams but not her?

Grimm,

Why don't you just shut your mouth they did thank everyone that helped him. What else do you want. You are very ignorant with the comment that you made. How about this comment, SHUT UP! NO ONE WANTS TO HEAR YOU!

You're allowed to your opinion just like everyone else so I'm not going to tell you to shut your mouth.

Yes he did say they were grateful to all the people that have helped him. But spent more time explaining how it could only be a "miracle" that he survived. He and his wife mentioned it at least 3 or 4 times during this short interview.

If they believe and people like you believe it was a miracle from God that saved him then you are deluding yourselves and degrading the importance of the people who actually saved his life.

There is a reason people call 911 in situations like this instead of a church to request a prayer circle. They do that later once time isn't so critical.

How about instead of thanking God for this "miracle" you thank "goodness"? The goodness of the dozen people that worked for 30 minutes to extract you from your flattened and mangled vehicle. The goodness of the 40 doctors and nurses that spent the last 2 weeks saving your life and helping you recover. If it wasn't for the goodness of these people you would have died in your car from being crushed by a CHURCH STEEPLE. What kind of miracle would that have been?

Grimm,

He literally cannot wait to thank his rescuers in person. Unfortunately, right now, that's not possible. And by the way, they worked nearly an HOUR to get him out.

Did you HEAR the interview? He will never EVER forget the sight of those firemen coming towards him as he regained consciousness, and he said so before referring to the "miracle".

His family has personally delivered big, beautiful, professionally designed "Thank You" cards to EMS/fire personnel and hospital staff. The family obtained the names of EVERY SINGLE PERSON who worked to save his life, both while trapped in the car, and while in the hospital; and included those names on the cards. He and his family are WELL AWARE of who saved his life. I find your comment ignorant of the REAL situation and downright offensive.

Signed, a family member of Mr. Williams

That's good to hear Pyro55. I did see the interview and did hear him say he was grateful for his rescuers. But I also heard him and his wife spend most of the interview proclaiming that a miracle from God saved his life.

If it hadn't been for his rescuers he'd be dead plan and simple.

It's so easy when something good happens to a good person to say "God did that". Or when something bad happens to a bad person that "God did that". But what about when good things happen to really bad people...did God do that? Or when really bad things happen to really good people...did God do that too? If God didn't do it he certainly could have prevented it. Or maybe...just maybe...God just lets life unfold in its own natural order without that kind of personal one on one interference in peoples daily lives.

Beside...isn't it a bit arrogant to proclaim God saved your family from tragedy while not sparing your neighbors family from tragedy?
