Palin "Vindictiveness" in Her New Book?

There's lots of high drama surrounding Sarah Palin's memoir, "Going Rogue."

The former Republican vice presidential candidate and Alaska governor's book hits store shelves Tuesday, but it's already a best-seller.

Portions have leaked, and they're stirring controversy.

What type of chapter will the book write for her political career?

She's the latest in a long line of potential presidential hopefuls to pen a book, and Newsweek Senior Editor Michael Hirsh says it could show she, too, is gearing up for a run at the White House.

"I think very much so," Hirsh told "Early Show Saturday Edition" substitute co-anchor Debye Turner Bell. "There's a long and storied history there. And Palin has put her own particular stamp on this tradition. Whether it's going to get her what she wants, which is apparently a national stage leading into (the next presidential race in) 2012, is another question.

"There are a couple things that were somewhat disturbing about Palin that appear in this book," Hirsh observed, "(including) this streak of vindictiveness toward her political enemies, which we see now include many in the (Arizona Senator and former GOP standard bearer John) McCain camp.

"Basically, the book confirms all of the stories that have been out there for many months about the dissensions within the McCain camp, as well as some of the questions about her mastery of the issues. We see that in this book as well.

"So, 'Going Rogue' is probably an appropriate title," Hirsch said. "Whether it's the kind of president America wants, assuming that Sarah Palin is gearing up for a presidential run, is another question."

Bell pointed to a line in the book in which Palin says, "Before my plane even touched down in Anchorage, shocking character assassinations of those I love had begun."

Hirsh says that might have been a reflection of what Bell referred to as Palin's possible "naivete."

"Again," Hirsh said, "she seems to be mainly out for repudiation of her critics here, and what you see is a lot of self-involvement. And, again, is that the kind of thing that the American people want in a presidential candidate, with all these other issues pressing?"

Bell spotlighted another quote from the book, in which Palin, referring to reports she and Todd Palin would seek a divorce, writes, "Dang. I thought, 'Divorce Todd? Have you seen Todd?'"

Asked whether that sounds "presidential," Hirsh responded, "There have been those stories out there and, of course, she abruptly quit the Alaska governorship, and the stories swirled that she was having personal problems with Todd Palin. But they're still together. And, look, it's also what people like about her: She's very blunt. Whether that makes her a presidential candidate, again, is really something that people are going to have to decide as the book sells."

Does Hirsh think "Going Rogue" will help or hinder any presidential aspirations Palin might have?

"I think it's going to help her with her base, her relatively narrow Republican base," Hirsh replied. "I don't know if it helps at all with what she would need to actually be elected president, which is to appeal to something beyond the conservative base of the Republican Party."

So many of these comments keep referring to Palin as an Author. She didn't write this book. She had a ghost writer. Someone else actually wrote the book. Yes it is Palin's life, it is Palin's story, it is Palin's memory but it is not Palin's words. An actual writer, an author wrote the book. I guess this is a minor detail to everyone but me. I'm not saying this to detract from her book. But it does make me cringe when I hear her called an author.

The most "telling" thing is her comment that the Couric interview was to be working moms just chatting. This shows she never ever watched a Couric interview along with never reading. Katie Couric got the job she has now because of her reputation as a tough interviewer. Anyone who has kept up with Couric's career knows she is a very serious journalist. Sarah Palin evidently doesn't read or listen to real news. . . . . . .maybe just that Fox nonsense. It also shows Palin's real image of women. . . . .perky working moms; not serious educated journalist.

I don't see Mrs. Palin addressing issues in her book as vindictive. I see it as setting the record straight from her perspective. Mr. Hirsch is incorrect in assuming that all of Palin's support base is narrowly conservative Republicins. I do NOT fit that category at all. However, I do support this woman. I like that she is as candid and straight forward as she is. I like that she pulls no punches. I like that she's not as concerned about polical correctness as she is being transparent. I like that she's not afraid to take on tough issues and people. I like that she's not afraid to take on the media, biased on both sides. There are many other things I like about her, but space and time restrict my quantity. Sarah Palin is NOT going away any time soon. Whether or not she continues in official politics remains to be seen. But we WILL be seeing a lot of her for a long time coming in SOME compacity. Get used to it!

Absolutely, but how absurd can one be to buy into the GOP 2008 campaign slogan of "country first," when any intelligent person can plainly see that it is all about power and dividing the populace -- in other words, "party first and country dead last!"

Obviously, D.C. politics changes everything, and 99% of all those getting elected and moving to Washington, march in lockstep to their party, unless you are a blue dog Dem.

I still blame the highly-partisan nature and division in America to the repeal of the Fairness Doctrine in the late 1980's, which gave us one-sided political networks and conservative talk radio full of attacks. With the advent of the PNAC NEOCONS in the mid-90's, it was all about bringing down Bill Clinton for any reason whatsoever, so that the NEOCONS could have full control and world domination. The 1990's were actually pretty good for everyone, with the longest economic expansion in our history, a conservaDem in the White House and a fiscally conservative GOP House to balance the D.C. power. It was the swinging of the pendulum in 2001 that ushered in a terrible usurp of political power that historians will be writing about for decades to come.

Oh my God,

Why can't everyone get over the fact that Mrs. Palin is a quitter?

It is probably a good idea for Katie to not interview with EX-Gov. Palin. It kinda is awful a lot of money to spend on her and she keeps stirring up our country with her stupid new book.

She is about to put our country upside-down and put many newspaper companies out of business, if they continue to expose the talbolids about Palin.

Get over with yourself! Mrs Palin! I think she has a "Hollywood Syndrome", which means that She thinks she is suddenly being famous overnight by a book. Get a life!

We have better priporties to attend. There are millions of children being starved, people are getting sick! and we are in a Titantic of Economy.

Unfortunately that is pretty much true, although the wealthy and corporate elite own the media and continue to control policy like health care and tax codes, damn the middle class majority!

It's amazing how 24/7 cable propaganda in this technology-driven 21st century can sway WE THE PEOPLE as much as it does, but this fast- paced world thrives on sound bites and you-tube videos. With all the attacks on Katie Couric and CBS among these posts, I really wonder how the rabid right would react if the "librul" media started using the same exact methods of the murdoch network, and label the usual suspects as "fascists" and "elite corporatists" to match every "socialist" rant by beck/hannity/o'riely.

This scenario is not even about Palin it is about "standards" and standards for a healthy nation have to be higher than those expected for a reality TV show which is basically all this excruciatingly awful Palin show "really" is.

Yes, America's polarization is only getting worse, as we see the far-right evangelicals supporting this unqualified creationist while attacking everything that President Obama says and does as he continues to try to clean-up the bush/cheney mess.

With all the truly qualified Americans that would make good leaders, it is beyond belief that the GOP continues to throw "B" actors and reality show divas like caribou barbi at the general public, but then again, their plan has been to "dumb down" the populace for years.

My representative in Congress ran on a platform of issues concerning those of us in his district but once in Washington the party dictated to him how he should vote and he complied even when those votes contradicted is position when running. Unfortunately he is in a safe district for reelection since most voters vote straight party around here.

Is Narcissistic and vindictive. Did I mention she lies?

Obviously, this creationist-believing evangelist is a science-challenged icon for the rabid far-right religious theocrats, and just keeps throwing out the red meat for them to fight over, and for the majority of Americans to laugh about! She is definitely a JOKE!
