Speedier XML on the horizon?

The World Wide Web Consortium intends to pursue a standard way to store XML data in a binary, rather than text, format as a way to make XML applications run faster. The move still has to be voted on, but a working group could be formed as early as this summer.

The decision to create a binary XML format already has its critics. There is concern that a major overhaul of the XML standard will create major backward-compatibility problems or not get adopted. More broadly, the debate over binary XML points disagreements over the future technical direction of XML.
