In-Depth Fort Hood: The Victims A look at some of the people killed or wounded during the Fort Hood, Texas, shooting rampage.
Soldiers at Fort Hood continued to display a mix of anger and disbelief at Maj. Nidal Hasan's alleged role in the deadly shooting rampage that left 13 people dead and dozens more wounded.
"I can't really say this was done by one of our own. Soldiers do not do this to each other," said 1st Sgt. James McLeod, a first responder to the scene whose unit suffered three fatalities.
But for the first time in almost a week at Fort Hood, there was a homecoming of troops from war - a bittersweet time for the post still grieving last week's shooting. Nearly 300 members of the 1st Cavalry Division returned home Tuesday night after a year in Iraq - the first such reunion since last Thursday's deadly rampage, reports CBS News correspondent Don Teague.
"It's kind of bittersweet to me," Jennifer Goetz, the wife of returning soldier Specialist Sean Goetz told Teague. "So much loss and then just so much happiness right now and love and joy."
Meanwhile, military officials at the base are focused on ensuring the mental health of soldiers as Fort Hood slowly returns to normal after a fatal shooting rampage last week.
"The mission at Fort Hood continues," Col. John Rossi said Wednesday, a day after President Barack Obama joined other officials in a memorial for the fallen.
CBSNews.com Special Report: Fort Hood Massacre
Mr. Obama denounced the "twisted logic" of the attack and vowed their "killer will be met with justice - in this world and the next."
Rossi would not address the specifics of the case against Hasan, an Army psychiatrist.
Instead, Rossi said all the units affected must use a combination of "friendship and leadership" to help any comrades psychologically affected by the attack.
"We expect leaders to be invasive. You need to know your soldiers. It's OK to ask them how they're doing," Rossi said, adding that "battle buddies may know each other better than anybody else" and can be a valuable resource for identifying any emotional problems.
"Let's find it from within and then seek help if they need it," Rossi said.
Fifteen wounded in the attack remain in the hospital - four in intensive care - according to Rossi. He could not confirm whether any scheduled deployments would be delayed in the wake of the attack.
Specialist Logan Burnett, who survived three gunshots, described how he and other defenseless soldiers threw chairs and folding tables at Hasan - a desperate effort to stop the shooting.
A wounded Burnett crawled toward another building, where he was saved by a fellow soldier.
"He drug me by the collar, pulled me into the building and locked me in an office in that second building and performed first aid on me," Burnett said.
Further investigation into Hasan's background has led to more questions. He had e-mail contact with Anwar al-Awlaki, a radical imam who has urged Muslims to attack U.S. soldiers overseas - a revelation that has caused finger-pointing among government agencies about why more red flags weren't raised about Hasan.
And in 2007, Hasan delivered a lecture to senior Army physicians at Walter Reed Medical Center, where he spent time as an intern, resident and fellow, warning military officials against forcing Muslim soldiers to fight against their religious brethren. He advised allowing Muslim GIs the option of being conscientious objectors in order to avoid "adverse effects."
Rossi said a news conference is scheduled for Thursday at 12:00 CST at Fort Hood to further address the case against Hasan.

- This headline proves my point perfectly. It's tragic that this case will not be tried in civilian court. To the dismay of many of you revenge seekers, If this case was tried in civilian court with the verdict coming from the JUDGE and not a jury box, a 1st year law student could get this man off. While I don't condone his actions, I can certainly understand why he may have gone to this extreme. "Not one of us" ?! Probably not. An officer ..... a doctor ..... a well educated man who served in the military when a civilian career probably would have been more rewarding. "Not one of us" ..... You mean a recruit from nowhereville that barely made it out of high school who saw the military as his only option? No .... he's probably not one of you.

- Your own brand of racism is revealed with every condescending work you write. Your name "Society's Nightmare" fits you to a tee. You condone this man's actions, whose actions are ridiculously labeled as "alledged", by saying you understand them? He killed 13 people, and wounded countless others. He has no excuse-none whatsoever. And he deserves to be tried by his own peers. He is not "one of us", so correctly stated by a soldier who is protecting your right to comment while you sit back while he goes off to war for you. You have judged someone you know nothing about, while touting a killer's so-called accomplishments. His own teachers and advisors say he was a mediocre student, and a lazy one at that. And he chose to join the military-his own choice, his own actions. At the end of the day, this "officer, doctor, well-educated man" will have one more title-MASS MURDERER.
- please don't blame the american Muslim people for this isolated incident. He was a bad egg but dont' blame our own for this. The American Muslim has to deal with enough prejudice.they are Americans to.I know that most muslims are not terrorists but i did the research most terrorists are Muslim but don't blame our own, they live and love America as much as we do.

- Sorry dude, you cannot re-write history. He was and still is a member of the US Army.

- Yes Hasan was not one of them. He was not a regular brainwashed assassin for the big American corporations. He had a conscience and morals. He was questioning American terrorist activities in the Middle East and all over the world. Most civilians deny this truth. Forget about the mindless military leaders. Very sad and tragic American story.

- "He had a conscience and morals. He was questioning American terrorist activities in the Middle East and all over the world."
Really? What conscience and what morals did Hasan have? And, he was questioning US terrorist activities in the middle east? What US terrorist activities?
"Me thinks" you got it just backwards, all kinds of upside down.
You a big fan of Hasan? Glad he did what he did? If your answer to these two questions is yes, and you are in the US, then you should pack up and leave darn quick.
We got 13 dead soldiers and many others with bullet holes in them lying in hospitals. We got 300 million pissed off people that would love to have a "Friendly" face to face with you.
Hey, I'm all for freedom of speech but come on man. You just stepped across the line.
Maybe I misunderstood your intent. Did I? Can you answer some of my questions?

- soldiers do this kind of stuff to each other in all wars. It's called fragging. The germans did it to their own, the americans did it too, the russians....etc... if you are surprised about this than you know nothing about war.

- And where did the Germans do it when they did it? Brooklyn?
This is a fragging incident. We've had several in the past 8 years, it's just that this one was so ... public, for want of a better word.
- Now that's hilarious! Fragging? FRAGGING? A muslim terrorist freak goes on an unarmed base with two weapons his handler brought to him the day before and murders 14 people and attempts to murder 31 more UNARMED soldiers and you call this fragging?
You must be a democrap since you make no sense and have not the ability to use logic.

- Timothy McVeigh was a good Christian Caucasian who blew up hundreds in Oklahoma, including many children. The guys who set fire to the 16th Street Church in Birmingham that killed four innocent girls were white Christians. How about we ban all Christians from voting and the military, bulldoze their homes and treat them like 4th class interlopers? Sounds fair to me. Get a grip folks it was an isolated incident by a single individual. In order to make some sense the media is now portraying Hasan as some one man sleeper cell who had direct links to Hamas. How convenient for all those Israeli supporters and Muslim haters. This is no different than the hatchet job they did with Lee Oswald trying to explain one man's irrational behavior.

- OK Johnz, I'll get a grip and agree that it was an isolated incident. However, if I gotta do it then so do you - get a grip yourself.
We are going to discuss this whether you approve or not. You throw us all under the bus as "Israeli lovers and Muslim haters" which makes you an "Israeli hater and a Muslim lover".
Bin-Laden started this crap, at least for me, on Septempber 11, 2001. It has backfired on his sorry rear-end. Hasan is simply the latest to jump on the Islamic pile of "dead American infidels". Are you one who wishes to see that pile grow higher? It sure sounds like it.

- Hasan killed 13 American servicemen... Israel killed 34 American servicemen when she bombed, napalmed and torpedoed the USS Liberty. Are the lives of the 34 less important than the lives of the 13?
.
Come on people... face facts and quit with the self-flagellation.
.
We declared war on the Muslims years ago, when we became Israels butt-boys. Instead of heeding the advice of men like George Washington... and adopting an impartial foreign policy, we became the choir boys for AIPAC.

- Treason: betrayal of trust; the offense of attempting by overt acts to overthrow the government of the state to which the offender owes allegiance or to kill or personally injure the sovereign or the sovereign's family. His act was treason. He's a traitor. Doesn't matter whether he's Muslim, Christian or Jewish - he's a traitor to the country, its people and its government. Hopefully, he will be tried for the crime of high treason and executed.

- Not one of their own. The first sentence in his statement is correct. Let's read between the lines on what the second sentence really says. Instead of "Soldiers do not do this to each other" it should likely read... "This is what a dirty sand ni__er arab did to us and those people can't be one of our own."
Consider this story.

- Just shows exactly how messed up the military is, and I am speaking as an Army veteran. The guy who was supposed to be helping soldiers was a whack-job himself, and everybody ignored his disturbed and disturbing behavior.

- That is because we have a pro-muslim Government. The Obama administration has gone public apologizing for America worldwide for its apparent atrocities towards Islam. Obama even called the US a muslim nation. He can't even call this a terrorist act cause it could offend his muslim brothers. He staked his whole presidency on muslim issues. All the while being distracted by apologizing and trying to please everyone with smooth words, guys like Ahmadinejad, Chavez, Kim Il Jong all seek nukes and they will get them. We are in big trouble folks.

I am tired of this apolgy bit. If it wasen't for Britain, America and France searching for oil in Arabia and Iran what exactly would the region be selling the world ?..............sand ?
And for those preaching how bad the US has been in the Muslim world why don't you pick up some books and find out what the rest of the world has been doing for the last 100 years.
Do you think China, Russian and France have not been playing politics and chess in regards to the OIL ?
Nothing ever gets done about Darfur because China has a sweet deal with Sudan and their OIL.
Why do you think the Pan-AM bomber was released ? Britain has a stake in Libyan oil.
- To add the USA never needs to apologize to the Muslim world. I'm waiting for Russia, China,Britain France and others to apoligize for playing the same games in order to acquire OIL.
Briain/Scotland just released the Pam AM bomber to Libya. Why ? Because of OIL contracts with QuDuffy.
Why has nothing been done to Sudan and the killings in Darfur ?
Because China has a sweet deal with Sudan to acquire OIL.
Should I go on ?
