Second Cup Cafe: Jon Secada
(CBS)
Grammy Award-winner Jon Secada started out as a backup singer for Gloria Estefan in the late '80s and, while it was truly amazing for him to learn from a star, he felt it was time to step out of the shadows.
Suffice it to say, Secada made the right decision.
In 1992, he released his debut album, which went triple-platinum, and rose to the top of the adult contemporary and Latin radio charts.
Since then, the international superstar has sold 20 million albums worldwide, won two Grammys, written and produced his own hits as well as some for other artists - including Estefan, Ricky Martin and Jennifer Lopez.
And he's still cranking out the hits.
The humble Cuban-American singer/songwriter, who has always worn his heart on his sleeve with his touching ballads and smooth sound, is returning to his jazz roots. (He earned a Masters in jazz vocal performance from the University of Miami.)
Secada recently released his new jazz CD, "Expressions," and made his first credited appearance on Billboards Top Jazz Albums at No. 39. He even decided to make jazz versions out of "Just Another Day" and "Angel."
Earlier this year, he teamed up with jazz guitarist (and former New York Yankee star outfiedler) Bernie Williams and provided vocals on a version of "Just Another Day" on Williams' album, "Moving Forward."
Secada stopped by "The Early Show Saturday Edition"'s Second Cup Cafe to perform the classic "What A Wonderful World" and his hit song, "Angel."
He starred on Broadway as Danny Zuko in the 1995 hit musical, "Grease," the Emcee role in Sam Mendes' critically acclaimed 2003 version of "Cabaret," and as "Joseph" in Andrew Lloyd Webber's and Tim Rice's theatrical hit, "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" in 2004.
