(AP)  A man opened fire with a rifle Tuesday at a drug-testing laboratory in suburban Portland, killing one woman and wounding two other people before fatally shooting himself, police said.

No names were immediately released.

The Tigard-Tualatin School District was in lockdown following the shooting at Legacy MetroLab, which was reported at 11:48 a.m.

"There were people running all over the place when the officers first responded," Tualatin Police Chief Kent Barker. "It was pretty chaotic at first."

One of the wounded was taken to Emanual Hospital, while the other was flown to Oregon Health & Science University hospital in Portland, police said. Their conditions were not available.

Witnesses said a woman in a bloodied lab coat ran into a nearby Subway sandwich shop after the shooting.

Alina Kurtavenao, who works at the Subway, said the woman had blood on a leg and on her forehead.

"She wasn't crying, she wasn't scared. I think she was in shock," she said.

Other businesses in the area include a framing store, a bank and a locksmith. The office mall was evacuated when police arrived.

Legacy MetroLab conducts drug and alcohol testing for employers and others, according to company spokeswoman Kathleen Gorman.

"There were probably six people working there," said Travis Bonser, a teller at a Chase Bank across the street. "It's just a regular lab."

With about 26,000 residents, Tualatin is a middle-class community about 13 miles south of Portland. It is also the site of the practice facility for the Portland Trail Blazers.

Every single day of the year, at least 80 people are killed with guns in this country. That's over 30,000 people every year. About 200 of those are legal DGUs. That makes your odds of being a murderer, rather than a "law abiding gun owner who used his weapon for self defense", greater than 100 to 1. Guns are NOT much use for defense. But they make great murder weapons!

"If guns are outlawed only outlaws will have guns" is a STUPID argument. Criminals may have LOTS of things I don't have, but I have absolutely NO INTEREST in being like them! Guns can't "defend" you, so why get a gun? Why act like a criminal?

Game on? Grow up. Guy buys gun, goes to workplace, shoots woman in the head. Where were you, playing video games? Watching GI Joe?

Seriously, grow up, guys. You're protecting people only in your dreams. Meanwhile, guy buys gun, goes to workplace, shoots woman in the head. Every day. Day after Day after Day...

I wonder if there's any significance to the location being a drug test lab?

Like, was this guy there for a forced test or something?

I know people who have had strong feelings about bad experiences with mandatory testing, but this??

Ah well, who knows? Not us, we says.

Where did all the gun happy conservatives go? How many more have to die before we give up this ludicrous obsession with assault weaponry? Need a rifle to hunt game? Sure, no problem. Handguns? For what, overthrowing a dictator that has hijacked the country? Get real folks, if we had to fight our own we would lose. Back when the Constitution was written people with a hunting rifle were pretty much toe to toe with most soldiers. Our Constitution was designed to ADAPT to current times, and real threats against the general public. Some traditions must change.

I share your frustration. However, in a country of 300 Million people, we have to expect this kind of instability to rear its ugly head once in a while. Even if an incident like this or the one at Ft. Hood happened everyday in the U.S., the people involved (the victims and the perpetrators) would represent a tiny fraction of 1% of the population. What makes these incidents seem out of proportion is the concentration and intensity of the news coverage and of course, in the past 15 years, the absurd overkill of the "opinion" shows on TV and radio. I'm not a gun owner or user but I live in a part of the country where a huge percentage of people own guns for hunting and protection. By and large, these are responsible people who are safety conscious. If the US were to ban guns, you can be assured that criminals would still have them. We might be able to stop a few shootings like this one, but a guy who has decided that hurting someone is more important than his own safety and freedom will always find another way to kill.

"Even if an incident like this or the one at Ft. Hood happened everyday in the U.S." -- phintel

Something like this DOES HAPPEN EVERY SINGLE DAY in the US! There are at least 80 gun deaths every day. 30,000 gun owners kill somebody every year in this country.

"What makes these incidents seem out of proportion is the concentration and intensity of the news coverage" -- phintel

NO. There are 80 every day and you don't even hear about 1 a day! The media are jsut ignoring the vast majority of gun murders. That's not "intensity of news coverage"; it's a virtual blackout.

So, phintel, you are completely wrong. You are just another tool of NRA.
