(CBS)  It looks as if Aerosmith's lead singer, Steven Tyler, won't be ending a remarkable 40-year career with his Boston buddies after all.

Recent comments made by both Tyler and guitarist Joe Perry have led the public to believe that this may be the end of an era - and that Tyler may want to go solo.

Perry, who has been performing with the 61-year-old rocker since his youth, commented on the situation late Monday night on the popular micro-blogging Web site, Twitter, saying that "Aerosmith is not splitting up," but "looking for a new singer to work with," according to ABC.

He also Tweeted (commented on Twitter) that "one of the band members is "doing his own thing and said so in the press. That's all I know."

At first Perry didn't seem too worried about a possible break-up.

"Steven quit as far as I can tell," Perry told the Las Vegas Sun on Friday, Nov. 6 from his Boston home. "I don’t know anymore than you do about it. I got off the plane two nights ago. I saw online that Steven said that he was going to leave the band. I don’t know for how long, indefinitely or whatever. Other than that, I don’t know."

His nonchalant response came at a time of frustration within the band - partly due to unanswered phone calls from Tyler.

Although Aerosmith recently performed in Abu Dhabi, there have been many planned tour dates cancelled due to Tyler's injury; he fell off the stage and broke his shoulder at a concert in South Dakota.

Last year, Tyler also had to check himself into rehab and underwent numerous foot surgeries.

Perry's initial response to the rumors came after Tyler commented on the uncertainty of the band's future.

"I don’t know what I'm doing yet, but it's definitely going to be something Steven Tyler - working on the brand of myself - Brand Tyler," he told British magazine Classic Rock on Wednesday, Nov. 4.

Regardless of what Aerosmith's future may hold, there are no signs of Perry slowing down any time soon.

Before his Tweets (comments on Twitter) on Monday about possibly looking for a replacement for Tyler someday, Perry told the Las Vegas Sun that he didn't want the rest of the band's talent to go to waste.

"Obviously he hasn’t been giving 100 percent to this thing for a long time," Perry told the Las Vegas Sun. "He’s obviously had this planned for a long time. To disregard his brothers to the point where we have to find out about it on the Internet - it’s like, 'See you later, Bud.’ I still care for him as a person, or at least the person I used to know. But things change."

Aerosmith's last studio album was "Honkin' on Bobo" in 2004.

Steven and Joe should just get over it. These guys have been at each others throats on and off for years! You know how you get good seats to an Aerosmith show? Longevity with the fan club! I wonder if I should re-new? When you are sitting in the goods seats you can see the drama unfold. 2003 West Palm Beach Joe is getting publicity over bar-b-q sauce made there, we are yelling things like Bar-BQ that axe JOE! HOT SAUCE! Steven is pissed! Joe grabs my wife on the way to the lawn. Everyone around us is giving Joe all the love!Joe loves us.We all love Joe! Fast forward 2006 Tampa. Steven got his motorcyle fame working for him. He is working the other side of the stage from Joe the whole night, the crowd is really diggin on Steven Joe comes over once with a pissy atitude, hates this whole side because everybody is lovin on Steven! I wonder if these two guys know how this BS looks to their long time fans. Nobody is showing-up for Aerosmith without Steven. Nobody is showing up for Steven without Aerosmith unless it is at the corner bar!!PSBLISS
