David Martin reports on new details of suspected Fort Hood shooter Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, an Army Psychiatrist trained to help soldiers in distress.

(AP)  Updated at 8:33 p.m. EDT

One of two police officers who confronted the alleged Fort Hood killer says he shot Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan before kicking the man's weapon away, handcuffing him and ending the nation's worst killing spree on a military base.

Sgt. Mark Todd joined Sgt. Kimberly Munley, hailed as a hero for her actions, in a firefight with Hasan that lasted less than a minute. Todd, 42, was not wounded, but the exchange left Munley injured and Hasan critically wounded.

Special Section: Tragedy at Fort Hood

Seconds after Todd arrived on the scene, he said he saw a calm-looking Hasan, his gun drawn and his fingers pointing at people.

"He was firing at people as they were trying to run and hide," Todd told The Associated Press Saturday.

That's when Todd, a retired soldier who now works as a civilian police officer at Fort Hood, said he shouted at Hasan.

"I told him stop and drop your weapons. I identified myself as police and he turned and fired a couple of rounds at me. I didn't hear him say a word ... he just turned and fired."

There has been confusion since Thursday's rampage about whose bullets actually brought down Hasan, who was shot four times. At first, Munley's supervisor said it was her shot to Hasan's torso that leveled him, but Army officials would only say that an investigation was under way.

Munley was down by the time he engaged Hasan, Todd said. He wasn't sure if Munley had wounded the suspect, because "once he started firing at me, I lost track of her."

Todd said he fired his Beretta at Hasan. Hasan flinched, Todd said, then slid down against a telephone pole and fell on his back. Todd says he then heard bystanders say "two more, two more."

At first he thought they meant there were two more suspects, but realized they were urging him to fire two more rounds at Hasan, thinking he was still posing a threat.

Todd approached the suspect and saw that he still had a weapon in his hand. Todd kicked away the gun, which he said had a laser-aiming device attached to it.

"He was breathing, his eyes were blinking. You could tell that he was fading out. He didn't say anything. He was just kind of blinking," said Todd.

Todd handcuffed Hasan and checked to see if he was still alive. "He had a good pulse," said Todd. He also cut off pieces of Hasan's clothes so he could get first aid and noticed Hasan had gunshot wounds on his side and back.

From the time he got to the scene until Hasan dropped, the whole encounter lasted only about 30-45 seconds, Todd said. "It was pretty intense. There was a lot of people shouting, a lot of people giving directions," he said.

Munley, whose injuries weren't believed to be life threatening, won wide praise after the incident.

Fort Hood spokesman Col. John Rossi read a statement on Munley's behalf Saturday night. He said she and her family were thankful for the support and prayers that have come their way.

Rossi said Munley underwent a second surgery Saturday and is in good condition. She is most concerned that the wounded make a speedy recovery.

When Munley arrived at Metroplex Adventist Hospital in Killeen on Thursday she was rushed into surgery within minutes, said Dr. Scott McAninch. He said she had "lost a lot of blood," especially from a gunshot wound to her left leg that had hit an artery, and praised first responders for using a tourniquet.

"That pretty much saved her life," McAninch said.

$50 says he was on prescription drugs, not unlike the Virginia Tech shooter, the Columbine killers, Charles Whitman('66 U.T.sniper), Phil Hartmans wife, Richard Jennings, Susan Smith(drowned her 5 kids), the thousands of Veterans who have committed suicide since Bush-Dick-Dumbsfeld started these illegal immoral wars (as reported by CBS), just to name a few that we know of. No doubt many more incidents where toxicology is unknown, unchecked or unreported. Seems there is a pattern and a common denominator here......there are NO "safe" drugs

I wondered how he was able to kill so many with just a handgun. But if he had a laser sight, it makes more sense.

It also makes it harder to claim that this guy 'just snapped'. He was apparently planning this for some time.

"People are being killed every day, in the name of Allah and Islam." -- jayrh

People are being killed every day, for lots of reasons. Nobody knows why this particular wacko killed all those people.

Read the Babble: God kills the whole effing world because he isn't happy with his own work. God orders all his followers to kill entire towns and tribes, to kill all the men, to kill all the animals, to kill all the first-born children, to rape all their women, and to steal all their possessions. Also, christians and jews are supposed to kill any child that talks back or disrespects his parents, any woman who wears short hair, all witches, all homosexuals, all fortunetellers, everyone who fornicates, everyone who commits adultery, etc., etc. Read the Babble. It teaches all these thing! The only difference between a moderate Christian and a radical Christian is the desire to take action. Their teachings come from the same book!

Any nutjob with a gun can kill lots of people, and he can use ANY reason he wants. It's all BS! The fatal combination ALWAYS is:

nutjob + weapon

And the weapon is usually a gun, because guns are ideal murder weapons and they are easily obtained everywhere in this country and throughout most of the world.

In the name of Jesus I shoot you with a loving bullet to your heart...
Only killings done in the name of Jesus have been from fanatical Christians who try to terrorize doctors into following their beliefs. The terrorist side of evangelicals, The Evangelicans.

Radical Islam!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The most recent reports link Hasan to 9-11 terrorists!!!!

"He attended the controversial Dar al-Hijrah mosque in Great Falls, Virginia, in 2001 at the same time as two of the September 11 terrorists.Hasan's eyes "lit up" when he mentioned his deep respect for al-Awlaki's teachings, according to a fellow Muslim officer at the Fort Hood base in Texas."

It should be enough to convince people with just a mass murder and a Muslim... You have numerous signs though. And still, people want to blame something else....

Read the Qur'an. It teaches these these things. The only difference between a moderate Muslim and a radical Muslim. Is desire to take action. Their teachings come from the same book.

Read the newest book "Moslem Mafia" linking our countries largest Islamic group to radical Islam. See how they have gone on a campaign of misinformation and propoganda.

Wake up America! People are being killed every day, in the name of Allah and Islam.

"Indeed, an argument could be made that Obama should have canceled the Indian event, out of respect for people having been murdered at an Army post a few hours before."

This was in a Chicago newspaper editorial.
Stupid right wing Obama haters.
Just plain idiots.
Bush never cancelled anything and over 4,000 of our military died DIRECTLY because of him and his agenda to please oil companies.
Bush was still reading kids stories after 9/11 and we thought the entire nation was under attack so knock the stupidity off Obama haters it is getting really old and you people are looking more the fool every second.

Lots of people WERE armed. If any more had been armed, more people would have been killed in the cross-fire. The more people who have guns and shoot them, the more difficult it is for other people to tell who shot first, who is the actual perp. So, innocent people will be shot, and then the armed nuts next to those people will fire back at whoever shot them and then... you should be able to get the point, but I expect you're too stupid to understand.

Remember, each and every one of you reading this that does the job you are paid for and trained to do and do it every day, is a hero every day after work.
I know a lot of people that are getting sick of this "hero" thing for people doing their job.
I guess I would have been a "super hero" because I would have made sure the guy was dead and I would have emptied my clip killing him.
Now he will write a book, there will be movie, he will make millions, then he will be released saying his "insanity" is cured.
Life is great in the USA!

The UK Telegraph has learned that Major Hasan has ties to the 9/11 highjackers. Why has the the American media not discovered this fact? http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/6521758/Fort-Hood-shooting-Texas-army-killer-linked-to-September-11-terrorists.html

Because, idiot, the words "has ties to" and "liked to" don't mean much.

I have "ties to" you just by having read what you wrote and responded to it. That doesn't mean we have much else in common!

This man took a paycheck from the U.S Government to serve this country and when it came time to do it, he wanted out.The U.S put him thru school, gave him a well paying career and as long as he did not have to fight for the country that gave it all to him he was fine. Then he turned against the U.S and decided to kill in the name of Allah!Using his religion as an excuse when all these years he had no quams about working and getting a paycheck from the same U.S.Gov.
I think he was going to kill himself as well but was wounded before he could!I don't want to read "poor man he was called names etc.He killed innocent people, daughters, mothers, sons and fathers in cold blood!! I want to read he is a cold blooded killer sent to prison for life at the least! The weapons were his,he planned it all!He thought he was going to be rewarded in heaven just like suicide bombers thought! He hid behind his religion! He was a coward and should of never been in the service!

And the first tourniquet put on the female police officer was by my son, an Army officer, who with another was being shot at by the shooter and had dove behind cars. After the second police officer shot the shooter and he went down (after my son yelled at the police officer to shoot him because he was reloading); anyway my son ran to the female officer, took off his belt and put a tourniquet on her leg from which blood was spurting out profusely. (It was NOT a medic who applied the first tourniquet - rather the belt from my son and the other soldier with my son who applied that tourniquet.)
