Osman Danquah, co-founder of the Islamic Community of Greater Killeen, said he was disturbed by Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan's persistent questioning and recommended the mosque reject Hasan's request to become a lay Muslim leader at the sprawling Army post.
Danquah said Hasan never expressed anger toward the Army or indicated any plans for violence, but during the second of two conversations they had over the summer, Hasan seemed almost incoherent, he said.
"But what if a person gets in and feels that it's just not right?" Danquah recalled Hasan asking him.
"I told him, 'There's something wrong with you,'" Danquah told The Associated Press during an interview at Fort Hood on Saturday. "I didn't get the feeling he was talking for himself, but something just didn't seem right."
Authorities accuse Hasan of firing more than 100 rounds Thursday in a soldier processing center at Fort Hood, killing 13 and wounding 29 others in the worst mass shooting at a military facility in the U.S.
Hasan himself was shot and wounded by a civilian first responder and was hospitalized under guard. CBS News correspondent Dean Reynolds reports Hasan was transferred yesterday to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, about 150 miles southwest of Fort Hood, where he is said to be in a coma.
At the start of the attack, Hasan reportedly jumped up on a desk and shouted "Allahu akbar!" - Arabic for "God is great!" Hasan, 39, was seriously wounded by police and is being treated in a military hospital.
Special Section: Tragedy at Fort Hood
The military has said Hasan was scheduled to deploy to Afghanistan, but family members suggested he was trying to avoid serving overseas.
Hasan's relatives who live in the Palestinian territories have said they had heard from family members that Hasan felt mistreated in the Army as a Muslim.
"He told (them) that as a Muslim committed to his prayers he was discriminated against and not treated as is fitting for an officer and American," Mohammed Malik Hasan, 24, a cousin, told the AP from his home on the outskirts of Ramallah, a Palestinian city in the West Bank. "He hired a lawyer to get him a discharge."
The Army major also had previously questioned the United States' war on terror.
A former classmate has said Hasan was a "vociferous opponent of the war" and "viewed the war against terror" as a "war against Islam." Dr. Val Finnell, who attended a master's in public health program in 2007-2008 at Uniformed Services University with Hasan, said he told classmates he was "a Muslim first and an American second."
"In retrospect, I'm not surprised he did it," Finnell said. "I had real questions about what his priorities were, what his beliefs were."

Danquah said his conversations with Hasan occurred following two religious services sometime before Ramadan, the Islamic holy month that started in late August. He said the soldier, who transferred to Fort Hood from Walter Reed Army Medical Center in July, regularly attended services at the Killeen, Texas, mosque in his uniform.
During his talks with Hasan, Danquah said he told him that Muslims were fighting each other in Afghanistan, Pakistan and the Palestinian territories and that American soldiers with objections to serving overseas had recourse to voice such concerns.
"As a Muslim, you come into a community and the way you integrate normally - I didn't see that kind of integration," he said. It was not immediately clear if Danquah had informed the Army about his concerns.
Most of the wounded from Thursday's attack remained hospitalized, many in intensive care.
Former President George W. Bush and his wife, Laura, visited wounded soldiers Friday night at the post hospital. A Bush spokesman said the couple spoke with family members of the wounded and personally thanked hospital staff members and Fort Hood leaders.
Texas Gov. Rick Perry said Saturday after visiting with the wounded that he was humbled by the conversations he had with soldiers. He said at a news conference that he told the wounded soldiers that the entire state is behind them, and that "there's 24 million Texans praying for them and wishing them well."
On Tuesday, President Obama and the first lady will travel to Fort Hood to attend a memorial service.

- I think it is odd, that the Army does not allow soldiers to belong to extremist organizations, such as skin heads, neo-nazi's and other undesirable organizations, nor to affiliate with such - not even to have posters in their barracks rooms or tattoo's of Thor or Thor's Hammer (due to extremist group association/affiliation) however - when it comes to religious extremism there appears to be some acceptance or turning a blind eye. Odd is it not?

- I say get rid of all the muslims both home grown and aliens. Even if they're not terrorist they still support what these murderers do. When do you ever hear a muslim speak out denouncing these crimes? They live off our land and our government and all the time they laugh at us. Is it going to take another revolution to get our country back? I think its time, before we are forced to walk around with turbans and burkhas all in the name of islam. And Obama should be sent along with the lot of them. He is a muslim sympathizer and will let them get away with it. Wake up America!!! Down with the mosques!!!

Major Muslim Fort Hood Terrorist Linked to 911 Terrorists
Surprised? The only dhimmis who will express SHOCK! will be the media and the authorities. Oh, that's right, they won't mention it.
What is it going to take?
Fort Hood shooting: Texas army killer linked to September 11 terrorists
Major Nidal Malik Hasan worshipped at a mosque led by a radical imam said to be a "spiritual adviser" to three of the hijackers who attacked America on Sept 11, 2001.

The radical Imam Anwar al-Awlaki, accused of supporting attacks on British troops
Hasan, the sole suspect in the massacre of 13 fellow US soldiers in Texas, attended the controversial Dar al-Hijrah mosque in Great Falls, Virginia, in 2001 at the same time as two of the September 11 terrorists, The Sunday Telegraph has learnt. His mother's funeral was held there in May that year.
The preacher at the time was Anwar al-Awlaki, an American-born Yemeni scholar who was banned from addressing a meeting in London by video link in August because he is accused of supporting attacks on British troops and backing terrorist organisations.
Hasan's eyes "lit up" when he mentioned his deep respect for al-Awlaki's teachings, according to a fellow Muslim officer at the Fort Hood base in Texas, the scene of Thursday's horrific shooting spree.
As investigators look at Hasan's motives and mindset, his attendance at the mosque could be an important piece of the jigsaw. Al-Awlaki moved to Dar al-Hijrah as imam in January, 2001, from the west coast, and three months later the September 11 hijackers Nawaf al-Hamzi and Hani Hanjour began attending his services. A third hijacker attended his services in California.
Hasan was praying at Dar al-Hijrah at about the same time, and the FBI will now want to investigate whether he met the two terrorists.
Charles Allen, a former under-secretary for intelligence at the Department of Homeland Security, has described al-Awlaki, who now lives in Yemen, as an "al-Qaeda supporter, and former spiritual leader to three of the September 11 hijackers... who targets US Muslims with radical online lectures encouraging terrorist attacks from his new home in Yemen".
Last night Hasan remained in a coma under guard at a military hospital in San Antonio, Texas, and was said to be in a "stable" condition. Born in America to a Palestinian family, Hasan, 39, was an army psychiatrist who had chosen to sign up for the US military against his parents' wishes. - Reply to this comment
- Wake up America!
The goal of Islam is the world domination of their religion! Read the Qur'an yourself... In the mean time stop spreding their propaganda. See for yourself what their attitudes are towards non-believers, how it's ok to spread their religion by violence, what awaits those who die in the name of Allah...
Islamic violence has been going on for centuries... Find out for yourself! Whether you want to admit it or not, they think they are at war with us! We are the non-believers! We are their enemy!
Haven't you ever wondered why whole countries cheer when something bad happens in America? Haven't you ever wondered why the news has something violent happening in the name of Islam every single day?

- We all need to accept that - just as there are many troubled Christian minds and souls...there are also many troubled Muslim minds and souls.
This troubled person was desperate and possessed reasoning that was deeply ruined by his emotional unhealthiness.
Mental disease is blind to religion, race, and nationality. Many of us are brought to the door of mental disease by conditions around us that are not under our control and serve the needs of the disease without being the least bit conscious that we are doing it.
Disconnection from healthy establishments, poor judgment, and poor discrimination values will inevitably lead a vulnerable person into a troubled condition that we see expressing itself with violence.
Mental disease is simply mental disease. Violence is simply violence. When a person allows their heart to become a home to mental disease and violence, we see this kind of behavior.
If you don't put garbage into your mind, it probably won't find its way into your heart or soul. - Reply to this comment

- All I can say to you is that you're probably a jihadist yourself. You're trying to justify what this piece of garbage Hasan did, and its not going to fly. He is a terrorist plain and simple. This less than human piece knew exactly what he was going to do and planned ahead. And all you can say is that he is mentally ill? How stupid are you? All you are is a sympathizer that cheered when he killed those innocent soldiers in cold blood. Or worse yet a liberal wacko that loves Obama and his liberal views for muslims, being a muslim himself. It is time Americans took their country back and not let Islam take over.
- What happend to "1 Nation Under God", all I can say is, "Don't Turn Your Back", don't trust these people, and I mean Muslims, they are taught to kill Americans..We all need to look into this Muslin relgion, or is it a relgion, no I don't think so..

- There is no doubt fault in what his chain of command did not do, that is to say they failed to follow up on what he was no doubt saying publically. Hard to imagine that he kept his displeasure to himself, since many of his friends are not surprised that he is the villan in this act of terrorism. Anyone catch his Colonel boss on TV? She sounded like she was trying to cover her ass for not doing what a senior Army leader should have done... investigate this **** poor subordinate. This human garbage turned on the very people who looked up to him and treated him with respect. I hope he wakes from his coma and lives so he can get multiple life prison sentences and be used as a sex puppet for the next 30-40 years by 72 of his almost a virgin fellow inmates at the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth, KS.

- Quran 2:191 (Muhsin Khan): And kill them wherever you find them, and turn them out from where they have expelled you. And Al-Fitnah (trial) is worse than killing. And fight not with them at the sacred Mosque. But if they attack you, then kill them. Such is the recompense of the disbelievers. ...

- The Muslims I know do not believe this way--they are ordinary nice people making a life for themselves and, as far as religion is concerned, they mind their own business.
I don't know much about the Quran, but I looked up this verse in 2 English versions, and the meaning of the quote is different in context--with the verse before the one you quoted, it seems to be referring to killing in defense:
(189) Fight in the way of Allah against those who fight against you, but begin not hostilities. Lo! Allah loveth not aggressors. (190) And slay them wherever ye find them, and drive them out of the places whence they drove you out, for persecution is worse than slaughter. And fight not with them at the Inviolable Place of Worship until they first attack you there, but if they attack you (there) then slay them. Such is the reward of disbelievers. (191) But if they desist, then lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful. (192) And fight them until persecution is no more, and religion is for Allah. But if they desist, then let there be no hostility except against wrong-doers.
And again,
190. Fight in the cause of Allah those who fight you, but do not transgress limits; for Allah loveth not transgressors.
191. And slay them wherever ye catch them, and turn them out from where they have turned you out; for persecution and oppression are worse than slaughter; but fight them not at the Sacred Mosque, unless they (first) fight you there; but if they fight you, slay them. Such is the reward of those who suppress faith.
- Why don't you read the whole Qur'an? The whole thing is full of violence. This is what Islam and Muhammad teaches. Pay attention to who they consider "non-believers", how it is ok to spread their religion through violence, how it is ok to deceive people about their true purposes, what awaits someone who dies in the cause of Allah.
I don't understand... If you just watch the news, some kind of violence happens every day in the name of Islam... Whole countries cheer when something bad happens to Americans. The biggest Islamic organization in America has been implicated in having ties to radical Islam and deceiving us as to their true purpose... Yet, Americans still come to their defense... Are they really so dumb as to not see what's happening... Maybe so, after all they elected a man as president that can't seem to stop apologizing to the Muslim world...
Their are peaceful Muslims... These are people that either aren't religous enough to know what the Qur'an says or are able to ignore large parts of it.
Wake up America!

- Durning WWII first generations or second generations did not go to Europe if they were from Italy, or Germany. How come we are sending these people who should not be going to Iraq to Iraq?
What is wrong are we so short of military personal?
And why are we in Iraq? - Reply to this comment

- I can't answer number two and three. But the answer to the first question is that we desperately need people who can understand the Islamic population and for heavens sake, Man, they are Americans who volunteer their service - what is wrong with you?
- Antoniof123 is correct. If you are fighting Japan you do not enlist the Japanese. Who needs to "get to know" and "understand" the enemy you are trying to kill? That is ignorant. This is the beginning of a worldwide religious war....and one side is radical islamic teaching..aka.muslim theocracy. Countrys will not be the boundarys of war...ideology and reloigion will be regardless of your nationality. Wake up people...(sandy19731)
