Tragedy at Fort Hood
In Fort Carson, Colorado, 14 soldiers allegedly committed or were charged with murder between 2005 and 2008 - and most were from the same brigade. An Army study concluded that the brigade "experienced slightly higher levels of combat than any other brigades." And in 11 of the 14 alleged murders there were documented problems with alcohol and drugs - less than half got help from the military.
Earlier this year, at Camp Liberty in Iraq, an army sergeant walked into a combat stress center and opened fire, killing five fellow soldiers. In the days leading up to the attack, that soldier allegedly had been acting erratically and had expressed suicidal thoughts. But a military report later pointed to a lack of guidelines for dealing with soldiers in distress.
"Such a tragic loss at the hands of our own forces is a cause for great and urgent concern," Defense Secretary Robert Gates said.

- Aside from the parallel shooting rampage at Fairchild AFB in 1994, does anyone remember details about a shooting at (Seymour-Johnson?) in the 70's or 80s? A military gunman shot the Emergency Room crew or similar details.

- CBS News needs to correct this story online and on the air. As several others have noted, the Oct. 16, 1991 shooting did not take place at Fort Hood and had nothing to do with the military. The shooter was a civilian and the incident occurred in Killeen, Texas.

- Typical trashing of our military.
A nothingburger story.
How about violence in the media, I would love to see that story.

- The shooting on October 16, 1991, took place at the Luby's Cafeteria in Killeen, Texas, not on Fort Hood. Please get your facts straight before reporting them. Your quote in this article regarding the worse mass killing in U.S. history prior to the Virgina Tech shooting sheds a bad light on Fort Hood, when in reality, the Luby's shooting was totally unrelated to the military.

- The US Army us under trained and it looks like the DOD is not doing their job when it comes to background checks. It is a pitty that this happens within the US military much less overseas. Shame on the US Army...a disgrace!! Step up to the plate and do it right. How can they expain this? "oh- we let a terorist goin the US Army?" or "our doctors do not need a background check or evaluations." NO EXCUSE Is the military belly up just like the rest of the economy? SHAME
