(CBS)  With the New York Yankees one win away from their 27th World Series title, the Daily News compiled this gallery of championship-celebrating back covers, along with a summary of each victory.

Click here to view the New York Daily News' 26 historic headlines.

Starting with the 1923 championship over the New York Giants, the series charts 26 titles through the Great Depression, World War II, the 1950s and '60s, the turbulent '70s teams and culminates with the late '90s dominance capped off by a subway series win over the cross-town rival Mets in 2000.

For Yankees fans, it offers a triumphant romp through the team's proud history. For everyone else, it sums up a century's worth of reasons to hate those damn Yankees.
