FBI Agents Kill Imam in Michigan Raid

(CBS/AP)  A man described as a leader of a radical Sunni Islam group was fatally shot Wednesday afternoon while resisting arrest and exchanging gunfire with federal agents, authorities said.

Agents at a warehouse in Dearborn were trying to arrest Luqman Ameen Abdullah, 53, on charges that included conspiracy to sell stolen goods and illegal possession and sale of firearms. Abdullah and 10 others were listed in a criminal complaint, but it was not immediately clear how many were in custody.

The FBI and federal security officials say the shootout FBI raids was part of a criminal investigation not connected to terrorism, reports CBS News correspondent Bob Orr. The suspects were "old fashioned crooks," one official said, with "lots of guns."

Abudllah, aka Christopher Tomas, refused to surrender, fired a weapon and was killed by gunfire from agents, FBI spokeswoman Sandra Berchtold said.

In a court filing, the FBI said Abdullah, also known as Christopher Thomas, was an imam, or prayer leader, of a radical group whose primary mission is to establish an Islamic state within the United States.

"He regularly preaches anti-government and anti-law enforcement rhetoric," FBI agent Gary Leone said in an affidavit. "Abdullah and his followers have trained regularly in the use of firearms, and continue to train in martial arts and sword fighting."

Leone said members of the national group mostly are black and some converted to Islam while in prisons across the United States.

"Abdullah preaches that every Muslim should have a weapon, and should not be scared to use their weapon when needed," Leone wrote.

The group believes that a separate Islamic state in the U.S. would be controlled by Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin, formerly known as H. Rapp Brown, who is serving a life sentence in a federal prison in Colorado for shooting two police officers in Georgia in 2000, Leone said.

Imad Hamad, regional director of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee in Dearborn, said he was briefed by the FBI and told the raids were the result of a two-year investigation.

"We know that this is not something to be projected as something against Muslims," Hamad said.

An FBI dog was also killed during the shootout, the U.S. attorney's office said.

Christian America needs to remind itself how America established itself by Native American genocide and the enslavement of Africans. Then too, we have interferred with counteless goverments, interceded in civil wars, killing untold millions, dropped atom bombs on Japan, and continue to wage pre-emptive and unprovoked wars whenever we think it serves our interest. And let's not forget the nasty black jobs our intelligence services do in our name (much of it in Arab lands). And we have supported the British Mandate that facilited the taking of Arab lands by Israel for religious reasons armed with American tanks, fighter jets, and modern weaponry of every sort, including nucear bombs, pointed at Arab countries. Saying that Islam is evil because of isolated instances of violent racicalism and revenge reeks with stupidity, hypocrisy, and jingoism.

I feel so sorry for the agents. They must have been so scared. I know they are not 'happy' that this had to happen. I'm so glad they do their job because I sure as heck cannot. I think it would probably help if we all stopped calling the guy 'Islamist' and started using 'criminal minded nutcase' instead. It's like when the crazy guy shot the abortion doctor and everyone kept calling him 'Christian'. If we keep letting the crazy people self-define as members ,even leaders, of religious organizations, then we give them respect and they don't deserve that.

This really bothers me. the feds can find this crook and take him out but they can't get involved in stopping gangs that are buying guns and killing each other and innocents on our streets. When is this madness going to stop.

I'm pretty sure that the feds belive that this was a matter of national security, where as gangs, they belive, are a matter for the coty or county police to handle.

There is a big difference between angry, hateful people illegally obtaining guns to use illegally for criminal purposes and those who legally obtain them to legally hunt and target shoot. If you don't want to own or use guns, that's fine. Leave those of us who choose to alone and stop criminalizing us. My sincere thanks, support and sympathy to the agents for having to be involved in this incident, endure the stress of it all and also in the loss of their canine companion whom support and respect.

Tomas was a wild chimp. The FBI had no other choice. Terror monkeys in this country must be stopped. OPEC should realize that their petty, convenient war will not work.

I believe this is the same slogan as the National Rifle Association, minus "you can have my gun when you pry my dead, cold hands off it."

The reason we keep our weapons is to defend our own rights. These whacko's want to take yours away. The difference is in intent.

OK, and your point is????????????

Just because you don't want to own a weapon don't tell me I can't own a weapon to defend myself against these wackos like Christopher Thomas aka Luqman Ameen Abdullah, 53; who converted to Islam while in prison and regularly preached anti-government and anti-law and taught/thought, "... [H]is followers have trained regularly in the use of firearms, and continue to train in martial arts and sword fighting."

These crooks just want to kill like other terrorists.

So Abdullah found out that Islam isn't always the religion of peace. In his case it was the religion of the piece... and he died by it. Good riddance.

He was using his constitutional right against "unreasonable search" and will be remembered as a martyr.

RE: jwesel1 October 29, 2009 9:28 AM EDT

Remembered as a martyr by who?

More idiot convict islamic converts?

Certainly not by civilized American society.

They should plate the bullet and weapon that killed the "Imam" gold and put it on tour around the US so I could see and admire it.
Now that's one bullet and one weapon the manufacturer should be proud of.
I hope the FBI agent is in the Thanksgiving parade so Americans can cheer him as a hero.
This is a lot different than when Bush gave orders to leave Muslims alone.

@bubbadubba

What? What about all those times liberals claimed Bush was illegally wire-tapping and infringing on the rights of these so called Muslim terrorists?

If you want to get into defending radical Muslims in the US, look no further than your good 'ole liberal institution the ACLU.

Same stories and what difference a HEADLINE MAKES!

Fox: Radical Islamic Group Leader Killed in FBI Raid
CBS: FBI Agents Kill Imam in Michigan Raid
MSN: FBI Gunfight Leaves Mich. Suspect Dead
BBC: Islamist dies in FBI Detroit raid
AOL: Leader of Radical Muslim Group Shot Dead by Feds in Michigan

--------------------------------------------

Personally I think the least sensationalized headline is MSN.

Anyone Agree?

Sure, and also the least informative. Could have been a bank robber or child molester or maybe an irate speeder instead of an Islamowackjob.
by Constitionalist October 29, 2009 9:50 AM EDT
That's because MSN is afraid of offending someone. So much so that they refuse to report an obvious truth. If the truth offends you, then you are probably some radical nutjob yourself.
