Kidman: Women Aren't Weak, Sex Objects

(AP)  Nicole Kidman conceded Wednesday that Hollywood has probably contributed to violence against women by portraying them as weak sex objects.

The Oscar-winning actress said she is not interested in those kinds of demeaning roles, adding that the movie industry also has made an effort to contribute to solutions for ending the violence.

Kidman testified before a House Foreign Affairs subcommittee that is considering legislation to address violence against women overseas through humanitarian relief efforts and grants to local organizations working on the problem.

Asked by Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, R-Calif., if the movie industry has "played a bad role," Kidman said "probably," but quickly added that she herself doesn't.

"I can't be responsible for all of Hollywood but I can certainly be responsible for my own career," she said.

Kidman appeared before the committee in her role as a goodwill ambassador for the U.N. Development Fund for Women, known as UNIFEM, to promote the International Violence Against Women Act.

"In the real world, the laws go unenforced and impunity is the norm," she said.

The legislation has stalled in the past, but a sponsor, Rep. Bill Delahunt, D-Mass., said he and others plan to reintroduce it soon.

The Australian star told Congress that the U.N. women's fund needs more resources. "We need the money," she said.

Before the hearing began, a crowd of people lined the hall and around the corner to hear her speak.

Who says I want a weak sex object? Hey Nicole, are you strong enough to endure a spanking?

All one has to do to look at the current and past Horror film industry to see that victimization of women still exists. The evisceration of women are a staple in flicks labeled 'thrillers'. In real life, statistics reveal that women are far more likely to be a crime victim, as well as children...a sad commentary on society in general. Having a bible study and attending church does not make one immune to predatory individuals, abusive husbands/boyfriends, and molesting relatives.

"...portraying them as weak sex objects."

Gee, why might that be?

Maybe because, in real life, there are a plethora of women who's only goal in life is to have a man pull their wagon for them......

Many don't - but many do as well.

I haven't seen a woman portrayed as a weak sex object in years. All I see is women kicking male butt. No movie is complete nowadays without a kick-ass woman taking out hordes of men.

Have to agree with you here. Actually I think it's men who are often portrayed very badly. Look at almost any sitcom and the stereotypical father is some often overweight slob (i.e. Jim Belushi) who blunders through life and would be completely helpless without his invariably hot wife to solve his problems for him. The wives are never portrayed like this.
Rwsmith is right - in many movies you see truly gratuitous violence directed at men but rarely is this shown towards women. For example, how often do you see a woman being punched in the face compared to a man? Not even close.

What's up with all the judgements? Because she is pretty, she can't be intelligent? I don't care where she worships or who she was married to. Women are being degrated & abused since the beginning of time. Your "silly waxen hole" comments are what women fight against every day. I suggest you get your head out of your silly waxen hole and educate yourself.
