Man charged in Canada hostage case

Man accused of taking 8 hostages in Canada charged with weapons offenses, unlawful confinement

(AP)  EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) - Police say a man who took eight people hostage for 10 hours inside the Edmonton Workers' Compensation building has been charged with unlawful confinement and several weapons offenses.

Patrick Charles Clayton, 38, held the hostages Wednesday over what police say was an attempt to settle his score with the Workers' Compensation board.

All hostages were released uninjured Wednesday evening.

Police Insp. Neil Dubord announced the charges against him Thursday.

Don Bellerose, a neighbor in the assisted-living facility where Clayton lived, said he was working in the concrete industry when he was injured on the job. Bellerose said he had been cut off from workers' compensation benefits.

Clayton is to appear in court Friday.
