Russia Still Resisting Iran Sanctions

(AP)  Updated at 8:11 a.m. Eastern.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Tuesday that the threat of sanctions against Iran would be counterproductive, resisting U.S. efforts to win agreement for measures if Iran fails to prove its nuclear program is peaceful.

Lavrov spoke following talks with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, who is trying to gauge Moscow's willingness to join the U.S. in imposing sanctions if Iran fails to come clean on its nuclear activities.

Lavrov said Russia's position is that under current conditions even the threat of sanctions against Iran would be counterproductive.

Clinton said the U.S. agreed it was important to pursue diplomacy with Iran.

"At the same time ... we have always looked at the potential of sanctions in the event we are not successful" in persuading Iran to comply, she said at a joint news conference.

Iran insists it has the right to a full domestic nuclear enrichment program and maintains it is only for peaceful purposes, such as energy production.

Clinton's visit to Moscow is her first since becoming America's top diplomat and since President Obama - who visited Russia in July - vowed to "reset" U.S.-Russia relations. She was to meet with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev later Tuesday.

Beyond Iran, Lavrov said the U.S. and Russia have made "considerable" progress toward reaching agreement on a new strategic arms treaty.

The 1991 Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, or START, expires in December and negotiators have been racing to reach agreement on a successor.

The two diplomats also discussed a recent Obama administration decision to scale back a Bush-era proposal for an anti-missile shield in Europe.

Also on the agenda are Afghanistan, nuclear-armed North Korea, NATO expansion, the situation in Georgia after its conflict with Russia last year, human rights and arms control.

While Bush and Obama were robbing the treasury, Iran built the bomb.

While Obama continued to sack the treasury, Iran built a long range missile to fit their nuclear war heads.

Even if Iran HAD the bomb, they wouldn't try to use it against us, they have no reason to.

They also KNOW that they would be obliterated off the map, if they tried it.

By the way, we have missile defense systems all around our country on OUR borders.

We don't need weapons in Europe, to keep us safe, especially from a fictional adversary.

Iran's longest range missile is 1,250 miles, while America's closest point to Iran is 7,300 miles.

It wouldn't even come close.

Many experts disagree with that assesment. And amazingly the SECDEF thought the shield was a good idea until his new bass said it wasn't.

This was NOTHING but a giveaway of MORE taxpayer money to Haliburton, KBR, Northrupp-Grumann, etc, etc, etc.

Killing it was a good thing, and will save us taxpayers TENS OF BILLIONS of dollars in waste.

It had nothing to do with Russia.

A lot of good it did scrapping the european missile shield. Still no cooperation fronm Russia after spitting in the face of our freinds. And on top of it the Obama administration cancelled funding of a human rights group that tracks offenses in Iran. They wuold not say why but I think that is obvious. What will that get them from Iran? Nothing.

The European missile shield was useless, it did nothing for our security, and was nothing but a boondoggle waste of money, designed to enrich the military industrial complex.

This was a gift from Bush to his politically connected cronies, and all that it did was infuriate Russia.

Killing it was a good thing, and it wasn't done to make Russia happy, though that was a side benefit.

The White House spin doctors will of course find another contrived opportunity to reaffirm Russia's willingness for the sanctions.

Coincidences

Secretary of State Hillary: Aren't we going to wait for President Medvedev?

Prime Minister Vladimir Putin: Why?

Hillary: Because he is the President of Russia.

Vladimir: So?

Hillary: I thought that maybe he should be here to talk strategy.

Vladimir: Madam Secretary, the soup is getting cold. If you want to wait for Dmitry be my guest but I, Madam like to eat my soup hot.

President Medvedev: Hi everybody, sorry I am late. Can somebody warm up my soup, I hate it when my soup gets cold!

Vladimir: What a coincidence Dmitry, my soup is also cold. Do you know why?

Hillary: Is it possible to talk about Iran and the threat it poses to the world?

Dmitry: No Vladimir I don't know why. Tell me why?

Hillary: Please gentlemen let us not fight over cold soup when Iran is...

Vladimir: You are always late for diner Dmitry. For once could you be at the diner table in time?

Hillary: And North Korea should be dealt with in the similar way we deal with Iran...

Dmitry: Well, I am sorry Vladimir but I had some urgent things to do. I am the President you know!

Hillary: Please excuse me, I have to go freshen up.

Vladimir: The Prime Minister has urgent things do to also but it does not stop me from being at the diner table at six o'clock sharp!

Hillary: Mr. President, Vladimir and Dmitry are bickering about the state of the soup.

President Obama: Hillary, did you call collect again. You know that we are on a tight budget. What would happen if I called you collect all the time. This will come out of your pay check Madam Secretary. And don't forget to bring back the soap and shampoo and a towel if you can from your trip.
I've got to go Hillary, my soup is getting cold...

That's a whole lot of typing, without saying anything significant.

Why bother posting?
