Dave Price Finding His Way

By
CBSNews
(CBS)  In our special series, "Dave Price: No Way Home," "Early Show" weather anchor and features reporter Dave Price is traveling across the country with what started out as just $50 to his name.

Catch Up with Dave on Twitter

Last Friday, we left Dave on the Santa Monica pier in California with $50 and a backpack. From there, it was up to him to find his way back to New York.

How did he do?

On Friday, Dave caught a ride from Santa Monica to Orange County. He babysat, did laundry and washed an SUV for a family -- who then took him on a private plane to Las Vegas. Once there, he worked at the CBS affiliate KLAS, reporting traffic and weather for about $5.

Then, he was off to the Retro Bakery, where he earned $10 making frosting. Unfortunately, Dave then lost those funds -- and more -- at the craps table!

So, without any money, Dave slept by the pool at a hotel. He was offered a free room, but as "Early Show" co-anchor Maggie Rodriguez pointed out, he couldn't accept it because he hadn't earned it.

On Saturday, Dave sold a shirt, and made some money back. Then he caught a ride on a Winnebago to Meteor Crater, Ariz., where he slept in the tow car.

Read the "No Way Home Producer Notebook" blog.

Dave woke up on Sunday at a truck stop in Winslow, Ariz., and convinced a trucker to give him a ride to a balloon festival in Albuquerque, N.M.

He checked in with "The Early Show" from there Monday morning.

Dave,
Travel through South Dakota and view the beauty of the great Missouri River at Chamberlain. Stop at the embroidery shop in downtown Chamberlain if you need to make some cash, or if you need a ride east, I'd love to help.

Dave, when you get to Iowa, how about a drive across the state in my 1939 Pontiac? I can pick you up whereever you are dropped off and take you across the state to the Mississippi River. I live in Des Moines close to Inerstate 80. Bed and bath also available.

Hi Dave,

We are a couple of retired Soldiers that have taken over our family business making jam, we have over 31 flavors like Baskin Robbins and could use your help in the various steps of making our gourmet jams. We are just North East of Interstate 80 from Des Moines, Iowa and could pick you up along I80 around the Des Moines area. We saw that you are scheduled to come through Iowa and would be able to take you on your next leg home once you have processed a batch of jam, we also could provide you a place to clean up it looks like you could use a shave :-). We wish you the best and hope to hear from you. Martin and Teresa

I am in the School of Social Work at UW-Madison. I and many others here find it appalling that your early morning ?newscast? is airing a segment making light of a person with limited resources that is stranded somewhere in the US. Has it not occurred to even one of your staff that this is the condition that at least 3.5 million people in America live with everyday? It is a condition called homelessness. Not only is this segment highly offensive, your early morning newscast then has the hypocrisy to belittle David Letterman for making light of his situation. I realize CBS has put too many resouces into this segment to pull the plug, but I hope you at least have the integrity to apologize for being insensitive to the plight of the homeless. No wonder most people now rely on the internet for their the main source of real news.

From what I see on the show it doesn't look like Dave is having a terrible time but we DO only get to see what the TV folks want us to see! It looks as if Dave and his crew (there is a crew, right?) are OK and aren't going into any dangerous situations.
Something to ponder: Is it creepy to have people coming out the woodwork to offer places to stay due to you being a celebrity? Do you feel their motives are heartfelt and they truly want to help? My opinion, as an average Joe, is I truly want to help but, I don't know Dave and the crew on any other level than what is shown in television so I wouldn't invite them into my home. This is what I have to offer:
If Dave & the gang makes it to Columbia MO there is a BBQ competion called Q-ing for a Cause, going on at Bass Pro Friday & Saturday. My family will be there. I'm sure he could find honest work, a place to sleep and some good food. Maybe, if he does a good job, he can catch a ride east! Good luck, Dave!!!!
