One Way Ticket, "No Way Home" for Dave

By
CBSNews
(CBS)  A one-way plane ticket, $50 cash, a small camera and a laptop computer.

That's all "Early Show" weather anchor and features reporter Dave Price will have to get home with in the coming week.

In the "No Way Home" series adventure, Dave will have to find a way back to New York on his own and with your help.

Dave will start his adventure in Santa Monica, Calif. The one-way ticket will land him there, then he's on his own.

If he travels by road, it's 2,806 miles. If he's going to drive, it would take 42 hours. He would spend about $340 in gas for that trip. The bus would cost about $200.

But Dave doesn't have that kind of money. Remember? Just $50.

What will Dave do to get across four time zones and all those states in between him and home?

He can't use credit cards, and people can't give him money. But he can earn it.

"Don't just give him a ride for free, make him do your laundry or clean your floor or something like that," "Early Show" co-anchor Maggie Rodriguez said. "Make it fun for us to watch and enjoy."

Another rule: Dave can't get assistance from one person for more than 1,000 miles.

Dave will forecast the weather from Santa Monica on Friday, and after that, the clock starts. He has one week from that point to make it home on his own.

Dave received some gifts from his fellow anchors, including a compass, Travel Boggle, a Rubik's cube, a copy of Jack Kerouac's "On the Road" and a comprehensive atlas of the world.

Dave said it will be fun to start the adventure and meet people along the way.

"I'm going to prove you don't need a lot of money to have a great time," he said.

"Early Show" co-anchor Harry Smith said, "I want on encourage our audience, don't be nice to him. The idea is don't help Dave. We want it see Dave struggle. It's all about the struggle."

Dave responded, "It's all about the struggle, but there's no need to people to throw their refuse out of their car window, as I'm trying to grab a lift."

You can follow Dave's journey on Twitter by joining "The Early Show."

Dave's producers will also be documenting his journey on the "No Way Home Producer Notebook" blog.

Hi Dave, I watch you every morning, and think this is so cool. I live in Vermont, so if I see you walking down the street you have gone the wrong way. What's your game plan if you don't find a job and run out of food money? Good luck!!
