Second Cup Cafe: Vertical Horizon

(CBS)  Nine years ago, rockers Vertical Horizon made a splash on the record charts with five Top 20 hits, including their No. 1 single, "Everything You Want," which was the most-played song in 2000.

Now, they are at it again, and want to give their fans everything they want.

After a hiatus in 2005, the band returned to the studio in 2007 to begin writing and recording their new album, "Burning The Days," which hit shelves last week.

Verical Horizon - made up of Matt Scannell (lead vocals, guitar), Keith Kane (vocals, guitar), Ron Lavella (drummer) and Lee Nadel (bass) - stopped by "The Early Show Saturday Edition"'s "Second Cup Cafe" to perform their first single, "Save Me From Myself" off of their new album, "Burning the Days," as well as "Everything You Want."

Time off from the band enabled Scannell to venture out into unchartered territory.

For the first time in his career, he started collaborating with different songwriters, including classically-trained singer/songwriter Chris Mann.

He produced and performed on Universal Republic artist Tyrone Wells' album, "Remain," and began writing with pop star Richard Marx, who performed in the "Second Cup Cafe" last week.

Marx contributed to three tracks on "Burning The Days" - playing piano on "Here," and producing two of Scannell's lead vocal tracks.

Writing songs has always been therapeutic for Scannell during rough patches, but this time around, he says he's in a more positive place, according to the band's official Web site.

He also said "Burning the Days" is "sonically as good as anything we have ever done. I take great pride in this album and feel that our renewed sense of creativity will resonate with our fans."

Vertical Horizon began as a duo with Scannell and Kane, while they were attending Georgetown together in 1991.
