A New Season of 60 Minutes, This Sunday

Gen. McChrystal, The Madoff Scam, And Dead Celebs' Lively Profits on Sunday's 60 Minutes, Sept. 27, 7 P.M. ET/PT

  •  (CBS)

(CBS)  60 Minutes' 42nd season premiere features an exclusive interview with the general in charge of the war in Afghanistan, a report on efforts to find money to repay the victims of Ponzi schemer Bernie Madoff and a feature on the still lively earnings of dead celebrities.

It will be broadcast this Sunday, Sept. 27, at 7 p.m. ET/PT.

CBS News National Security correspondent David Martin leads off with an interview of Gen. Stanley McChrystal as the war in Afghanistan heats up. Conducted over the course of a week Martin spent in Afghanistan with him, McChrystal details what needs to be done to turn around a war he has already said could be lost.

Then Morley Safer reports on how the thousands of Madoff victims might get some recompense when all the assets of the scammer are sorted out.

Marilyn Monroe, James Dean and Elvis are dead and now, so is Michael Jackson. But as Steve Kroft reports, they are very much alive when it comes to earning money for their estates.

These stories, plus Andy Rooney, on Sunday's 60 Minutes.

President Obama has spoken only once to General McChrystal and that speaks volumes to Obama's inexperience and arrogance. Clearly for this military officer to have put his career and pension on the line by speaking out, shows how close we are to the tipping point in Afghanistan if we haven't already gone past it.

McChrystal understands that this war is a special forces war and that means enlisting the civilian population to help him identify and eliminate the leadership of the Taliban insurgency he was a key force in almost eliminating the insurgency in Iraq.

Biden who appears to have been put in charge of Afghanistan will likely continue his obstructionism instead of letting the commanders decide what they need and when they need it.

Washington here's a piece of advice get out of his way and let him do his job.

In response to the question posed at the end of the 60 Minutes program this evening, I would say that the company that best represents America is Ford. It has withstood the test of time and recently was able to hold its own when other car manufacturers were depending on government financial support in order to stay alive.

OMG! What is the retirement age for old journalists 100 yr. old? HDTV doesn't do Morley Shaffer any good he needs a face lift or we start calling him Mortician Shaffer. Hint when women journalists reach the 50yr mark you force them out of the business.

Hey 60 minutes heres a revolutionary idea in this modern age of video and electronics how about having fresh year round programming instead of showing retreads for five months out of the year.

If you want to give your regular season staff a five month break, fine, you fired almost the entire 60 minutes II staff and you could easily have 60 minutes summer season and 60 minutes regular season. If that doesn't work because of contractual issues, bring back 60 minutes II just during the summer you had some great programming on it.

Thought this was going to be a good episode concerning the subject. All I saw was the typical un-insightful media stories trying to propagandize the public into complacency and acceptance of the status quo.
