Five family members, including a couple and three children, were found slain in their home, and detectives were trying to identify possible suspects, authorities said Tuesday.

Authorities discovered the bodies late Monday afternoon after responding to a 911 call about possible shots fired at the address, Logan County Sheriff Steven Nichols said at a news conference.

A 3-year-old girl survived the attack and was taken to a hospital in Peoria, he said.

Nichols declined to say why his office didn't release information about the slayings until Tuesday morning. He said detectives were following leads to try to identify a suspect, but that authorities could only say that the suspect was considered "armed and dangerous."

CBS News affiliate WCIA in Champaign reported Tuesday that police advised area residents to keep their doors locked.

"We are determined to identify and arrest those responsible," Nichols said.

The slayings occurred at the family's ranch-style home in Beason, a farming community about 140 miles southwest of Chicago.

Nichols would not provide details about the crime scene or the suspected cause of death, but said an autopsy was scheduled for later Tuesday.

Nichols identified the victims and gave approximate ages: Raymond "Rick" Gee,46; Ruth Gee, 39; Justina Constant, 16, Dillen Constant, 14; and Austin Gee, 11.

He did not immediately provide details about the girl who survived.

Others in this tiny community described the family as quiet and well-liked.

Postmaster Jodie Duncan said she saw the children every morning when they came to the post office to get on the buses that took them to school.

"They were great kids," she said. "Austin was in the post office every morning in the lobby on the floor doing his homework. He'd say he's more awake in the morning."

She said Raymond Gee worked in construction and that Ruth Gee was a stay-at-home mother.

There are no gunshot wounds on this family, so get off the gun crap.
No body deserves this and my heart is truly breaking over this. I did not know the husband or the kids, but I knew Ruth 20 or so years ago.
Lets quit blaming, and start Praying for the family.

Such a sad story, my heart goes out the the victims. Not knowing the details, I just wonder what the outcome would have been had the adult victims had a firearm at their disposal? Would their whole family be dead? Sad stories like this should be a wake up call to law abiding citizens. Concealed Carry needs to come to Illinois and the sooner the better. Concealed Carry works. I live just 7 miles from Beason, untill they find this murder do you think I will be carrying? Yes of course I will. I will do whatever it takes to protect my family.

"The DOJ tells us guns are used in self defense hundreds of time per day ... most of the time without even one shot being fired" -gunlickerdan

That is complete BS. It is absolutely NOT what the DOJ tells anybody. You LIARS like to brag about how you "waved yer gun around and skared the varmint off". You are delusional.

If someone wanted to kill you, dan, certainly he/she would first determine whether or not you were "armed". Since you carry a murder weapon with you all the time, and you are eager to shoot, the person wanting to kill you would NOT stand in front of you and announce their intention to attack, waiting for you to fire first. No. They would just attack without warning. If you've got a gun, they'll get an Uzi. If you've got an Uzi, they use a rocket launcher, etc.

There is NO POSSIBLE DEFENSE against a reasonably intelligent person with the desire and intent to kill you. As with war, the ONLY winning move is not to play the game. By owning a gun, by remaining paranoid, by seeing "danger" everywhere, you are "in the game". It ALWAYS ends badly.

Bet the killer was a white guy, just like the rest of the murderers involved in the most recent mass slayings.

Hmmm.... I wonder if it could possibly be a NO... NOOOO... a family member who did this to this family?

Christ. It's like Mad Ad-libs here in the good ol' child murdering USA. You just fill in the blank with a state of the union.

Apparently vitally important for these psychopaths as always to take out the children. And of course, it is ALWAYS much easier to kill people with a gun -- there is no other purpose for a gun than to kill and kill quickly and in rapid succession if necessary. Why buy a gun if a knife will suffice? It takes considerably more strategy and/or strength and agility to kill five people like this without a gun and without alerted survivors escaping. How freaking clueless do you have to be?

The problem begins when a person gets the urge to kill their family. It doesn't begin when they buy a gun. Didn't you read about the family of 8 that were beat to death down in Georgia a few weeks ago. And some 20 year old kid in Virginia this week killed 4 adults by blunt trauma to the head. None of those people escaped or fought off the killer. But go ahead and fear the guns. The sociopaths who are capable of violence won't hurt you without them, right?

"Killers definitely prefer defenseless victims."

And, apparently, guns prefer to kill their owners, because the NUMBER ONE fatalily by gun owners is SUICIDE, not "self defense". It's as if the guns are whispering to you, "I am so depressed. Nobody likes me. I have to end all my problems now. I'll feel much better after I eat this bullet... BANG!"

Guns are not the problem. Psychopathic people who get angry are the problem. If it hadn't been with a gun (and no where in this story does it say they were shot) it would have been with another weapon. Should knives be outlawed because people get stabbed? Should we make people cut off their hands because someone gets strangled? You get the drift. It's the person...not the weapon, who is to blame.

It does say "shots fired" but I agree it's not guns that are at fault...it's the people...if they can't get a hold of guns, they'll use knives or their bare hands. People like this aren't going to say, "Oh, since guns are illegal, I won't commit any crime."

You know I can't help but think about the shogun vigilante who methodically cornered a suspected thief and cut off his hand. These people are psychopaths, and they CHOOSE exotic weapons as a modus operandi. This student wasn't defending itself, it was following some psychotic ritual probably derived from some disturbed child-hood indoctrination of the Old Testament.

These are all the same people. They look for a reason to kill, and guns or exotic weaponry are part of this disturbing repression brought on by some apparently really goading and disgusted or shamed parents or some other severe bizzare childhood experience.

Here we have five more people likely killed with a gun. Around 30,000 Americans are killed each year with guns. Close to 70% of all homicides are gun-related. We have around 84 gun-related deaths per day. That's a shame. Guns are a nuisance to our society.

Criminals are a nuisance to our society. Did you read about the other families killed today? No guns involved. But you see the guns as the problem, not the people.

Shoollord has been blaming guns for all our problems for years. Schoollord knows everything and you should not be questioning his conclusions, he has an agenda to defend.

gunownerdan said that I blame guns for all of our problems. He should change his name to Pinocchio. I know people are killed without guns too. But I also know that most homicides and suicides are gun related. Seven out of every ten homicides are gun-related. Close to 6 out of every ten suicides are also gun-related. Therefore, guns are at the epicenter of our homicide and suicide problems. Guns are weapons designed to kill people not to save lives. That's why we have around 30,000 gun-related deaths per year and just 250 lives saved with them. That proves guns are a nuisance to society just like gunownerdan is a nuisance to the truth.

This is to insane to me. I don't know any of these families but it's just heart breaking to me that so many innocent children are losing their lives. This issue is beyond gun control because the ones that are actually committing these murders probably don't own a legal gun anyway. I live in upstate New York and three pre teen was shot almost two weeks ago...another teen just road up on a bike and fired into a crowd of teen....he wasn't not firing at anyone in particular just firing.

Most gun-related deaths are caused either by legal gun owners or with their legally owned guns. That's a fact. Gun owners buy all the lies from the NRA because they are dumb. Guns are designed to kill people. Anyone who likes guns supports what they are designed for. Gun owners shoot at targets shaped like human torsoes. Your score is higher if you hit the head or the heart. That's practicing to kill people. Those law abiding gun owners are law abiding until their wives decide to leave or until they are fired from their jobs. Then they practice with real people.

Banning guns won't solve the problem... It only keeps honest citizens from buying guns to protect themselves. Crooks and sociopaths who are determined to kill will just buy a gun illegally to do the crime.
gunownerdan replies:

One family was recently killed by being beaten to death so clearly hands and especially fists are the greatest nuisance to our society because you can't kill people with a gun unless you have hands, and even if you don't have a gun you can still kill with your hands.
