Style Expert Katrina Szish Shares Thoughts on Looks That Stood Out For Better or Worse at 61st Primetime Emmy Night

(CBS)  The 61st Primetime Emmy Awards were full of TV stars dressed to the nines Sunday night. Some really hit the mark, and some fell a little bit short. So, who looked the best and who just missed the boat?

Style expert, Katrina Szish, shared who was best and worst dressed, and who took fashion risks and won on the red carpet.

THE BEST
Blake Lively-("Gossip Girl")

Szish said, "The best red carpet dresses should inspire a jaw-dropping reaction, and this lipstick-red Versace gown with the high slit and plunging neckline did just that. It is the fashion equivalent of a high-performance sports car. It hugs the curves and packs a lot of power. It was sexy, young, daring, powerful and incredibly refreshing -- not your typical red carpet fashion fodder."

Szish added Lively's Grecian hairstyle also livened up her look. "I think she really brought the wow to the red carpet that we've missed the past couple of years."

Drew Barrymore-("Grey Gardens")

Szish said sometimes Barrymore overdoes it, and looks "too costume-y," but on Emmy night, she said, she showed the small screen folks how it's done by showing how to be big screen Hollywood royalty.

"The beautiful shade of the Monique L'Huillier dress almost matched the hue of Drew's skin, resulting in a beautiful soft look," she said. "The strapless neckline, fitted bodice and full-skirt were the perfect complement to Drew's feminine figure, and her sophisticated hair completed the look. She was a show stopper."

Sandra Oh-("Grey's Anatomy")
"Sandra always makes fashion fun, and her gold strapless embellished sheath with rope belt by Marchesa was yet another homerun," she said.

Gold, Szish said, was a big trend of the night, and she did it perfectly.

"Her blown out hair," Szish said, "added a softness to the dress that completed the look very nicely."

Julia Louis-Dreyfus-("The New Adventures Of Old Christine")
The rich, jewel-tone teal strapless Vera Wang gown, Szish said, was simple, elegant and flattering.

Szish added, "This proves that less can be more."

THE WORST
Sarah Silverman ("The Sarah Silverman Show")
Szish asked, "Was this a leftover bridesmaid dress she recycled?"

The loud royal blue color was bad enough, Szish said, but the unflattering poufs hitting right at the hip seemed more like comedy than couture. They made her seem hippy and large, which she isn't."

Patricia Arquette ("Medium")
"I love the big-shoulder trend, I love the asymmetrical trend," Szish said. "But this is the perfect example of how not everyone looks good in every trend. The dress looked too heavy, too tight, and it wasn't flattering on Patricia's womanly figure. It was a major fashion statement that fell majorly flat."

Jon Cryer ("Two And Half Men")
Szish said Cryer's look was more reminiscent of Ducky in "Pretty in Pink."

"I can't excuse the bizarre striped sweater vest he wore under his suit," she said. "Just does not compute, plus it is inappropriate for a black tie event."

The Winners and Losers

THE RISK-TAKERS
January Jones ("Mad Men")
Jones' art deco-inspired, white architectural Versace masterpiece was a good fit, Szish said, for the "Mad Men" star. The almost armor-like, cut-out bodice, Szish said, exaggerated her flawless figure in the best possible way.

"It was a risk," Szish said. "The dress was a conversation piece, and she pulled it off."

Leighton Meester ("Gossip Girl")
Szish said Meester's Grecian-inspired white Bottega Veneta gown with puffs atop the shoulder paired with red lips, a loose up do and small red minaudiere gave Leighton an otherworldy, Snow White appearance.

"It was what young stars should look like on the red carpet," she said. It certainly wasn't your typical overdone prom look."

Mila Kunis (Family Guy-Voice)
The unexpected dark red shade with the ballerina-esque tulle skirt that fell just to the ankle was chic, edgy and girlish at the same time, Szish said. Her makeup, she added, was also sophisticated in a way that really complemented the look.
