5 Children, Mother Slain in Fla. Apt.

(CBS/AP)  Last Updated 4:10 p.m. ET

Five young children and their mother were found dead in a Florida apartment, and authorities were searching Sunday for the woman's husband, who had left the country.

Collier County Sheriff Kevin Rambosk called the homicides "the worst of the worst."

Sheriff's officials said they want to talk to the woman's husband, Mesac Damas, who is a person of interest. He's described as just over six feet tall, 230 pounds, with short black hair and brown eyes.

During a morning news conference Rambosk said Damas, 33, boarded a flight to Haiti from Miami International Airport on Friday.

Collier County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Michelle Batten said Damas has family from Haiti.

Haitian police spokesman Frantz Lerebours could not immediately be reached for comment. A message was also left with the FBI.

The victims were identified as Guerline Damas, 32, and her children: Michzach, 9; Marven, 6; Maven, 5; Megan, 3; and 11-month-old Morgan.

Batten would not say how they died.

Family members contacted authorities Thursday saying they had not heard from the mother. A missing person report was filed the next day, and on Saturday, the sheriff's office entered the home in a gated community in Naples and found the bodies, Batten said.

Damas left Miller's Ale House in Naples, where he worked as a cook, Thursday night. He arrived at the Miami airport Friday morning and boarded a flight to Haiti, the sheriff's office said.

According to CBS affiliate WINK Sheriff Rambosk called the killings a crime of passion.

"We don't see any indication that would lead us to believe the residents of Collier County should be abnormally concerned," he said.

WINK reported Saturday night that Damas' black GMC Yukon Denali was found at the airport. It has been secured by investigators who are checking it for evidence.

The man's father, Jean Damas Sr., told the Naples Daily News that his son had called his brother from Haiti. Damas Sr. also said his son and his wife have had domestic problems. A phone message left Sunday by the Associated Press for Damas Sr. was not immediately returned.

Collier County court records show Mesac Damas has prior charges for domestic violence against his wife. A 2005 charge was dismissed after a hearing.

OK, what is missing from this description?

Sheriff's officials said they want to talk to the woman's husband, Mesac Damas, who is a person of interest. He's described as just over six feet tall, 230 pounds, with short black hair and brown eyes.

It would have been nice to know if he was white, black, mexican, asian, or whatever. I am not making this an issue about race beacause it could have been anyone that committed the murder but when giving a description, the race is the first thing you need.

They should have armed those children, then the crime would not have happened (they could have defended themselves, especially if they had loaded assault weapons).

My heart goes out to the family, this is horrible! What can drive a person to do something like this? Just like Chris Coleman killed his wife and two kids so that he could be free and marry another woman...how about you just leave her and go and be happy, when is murder a solution to your problem!!! This is so sad!

As for Florida, I have no clue about what's going on, but I will suggest that you watch the documentary Cocaine cowboys part one and two....you will have a different take on it....this is nothing new....

Florida is an unlucky state. A lot of the crime committed in Florida is done by disturbed people that come from other states in the country, specially from the north. Later, some people around the country blame Floridians for the chaos and crime in the state.

Haitian men killing their wife happen often...especially in the Miami area... usually they have found another women and instead of leaving they kill their wife or have her murdered but I've never heard of a Haitian man killing his children. I understand that it's not about him being haitian but I've never read a story of one killing their child. That's one cold hearted man that kill a innocent child.

When will all of the idiots and naysayers finally realize that Florida is not at fault.

Stupidity breeds stupidity, whether it pertains to comments from people completely removed from the present topic, or those that believe that this doesn't or will not occur in their own back yard.

People from all races, colors, creeds and nations sadly kill others for no apparent reason, or whatever reason they perceive.

Five children are gone, their throats slit by a murderer. http://www.naplesnews.com/news/2009/sep/20/photosvideo-worst-worst-5-kids-wife-found-slain-na/

Pray for what's left of the family and that they find the idiot.
