Special Report Health Care The latest news and analysis on the continuing battle over Barack Obama's health care reform plans.
The president told CBS News chief Washington correspondent Bob Schieffer that, in detailing his health care proposals, he is attempting to warn Americans that the federal budget cannot sustain the current system and "a lot of Americans are going to be much worse off over time."
Schieffer asked if the president could still keep his campaign promise that there would be no additional tax on people making less than $250,000 a year, no payroll tax and no capital gains.
"I can still keep that promise," Mr. Obama said, "because … about two thirds of what we've proposed would be from money that's already in the health care system and just being spent badly."
"This is not me making wild assertions," he continued.

President Obama did admit that "we are going to have to find some additional sources of revenue" to subsidize the other third of the cost. Insurance and drug companies are going to have to pony up, he explained.
Schieffer then asked how the additional cost to drug and insurance companies would not trickle down to Americans pocketbooks.
"They are passing on those costs to the consumer anyway," he responded. "The difference is that they're making huge profits on it, Bob."
By enforcing the rules and standards of care, the president said, he can assure Americans that they are getting "bang for their buck" in terms of medical treatment.
"Let me be honest," the president told Schieffer, "with a piece of legislation this complicated and a sector of the economy that's about one-sixth of our economy, there's a reason why for the last forty years people have been talking about this and it hasn't gotten done."
"It's hard," he admitted.

Check out what Obama and the Democrats want you to believe.
40 million new people insured + Zero new doctors = No higher taxes, not a dime increase in the deficit, and no rationing of healthcare....yeah right !
Something doesn't add up.....they are just lying - Reply to this comment
- Look out Mr. Shieffer, Chris Wallace is all upset that President Obama didn't make it onto FoxNews Sunday....It's got to be a wild conspiracy....lol. It couldn't have anything to do with Mr. O'Reilly shoving one of Obama's aids during a campaign event in Manchester, NH during the primaries....or suggesting the President is a Muslim.....no!!
Excellent interview Me. Shieffer. Thank you. - Reply to this comment

- We will save vast amounts of money and get better care when we finally wise up and have universal single payer. There should be NO profit in health care. Period.

Why shouldn't health insurance companies make a profit, they are no different then Auto, Home or Liability insurance companies.....do you think everyone exists just to serve the all mightly liberal masses, where no profit is made and everyone is out of business......businesses, including insurance companies exist for one reason, to make profit....remember that lib

- It is too expensive to stay on our present course of failed private corporations running everything including health care. We will actually SAVE vast amounts of money if we do Medicare for ALL.
When are we going to unite against the real enemy, the top 2% that are the corporate masters of the the GOP. We need to organize for boycotts and general strikes to bring the right wing fascists to their knees. We will take a little hit but in the long run we will avoid the concentrations camps and debtors prisons. - Reply to this comment
- President Obama?s heath care promises won?t be kept. Costs will rise exponentially, NOT fall. Therefore, our taxes will be the ones to pay for it. We need to support the goal of covering all individuals through private health insurance. We are NOT prepared to turn our health system over to the government.

- Mr Obama must be either sick or just ill to lie repeatedly so.
Maybe Mr. Obama realizes Americans
are on to him as being a fraud and a phoney, a person never to be either believed or trusted. - Reply to this comment

- The conservatives are so burned by all the bad stuff said about George W. - which they knew to be true - that no matter what Obama says or does they are throwing mud at him....even though they may agree with him on some items.

- The Republican way....screw up the economy and give billions to the rich to save their hide but screw the people who make middle class incomes by allowing insurance companies to dump them when they need medical care.

- Mr President,
I have been in health care for more than 25 years. Just the thought that we can provide health care to "All" is a miss conception. WE do that as we speak....emtala provides health care for all as does federally funded programs like FES!!! Most uninsured people access health care in the most costly way...via the emergency department. With better education of those who "don't get get" and penalties imposed on those accessing emergency health care we can get a handle on this situation. I recruit physicians to the most undesirable areas due to the lack of torte reform. I live in AZ and bringing much needed physicians to this area is my bread and butter. What you are proposing will kill "middle america". It's time to remove the lobbiest from "BIG Insurance and Drug Companies" from the back pockets of politicians and reign in the cost of doing business with the afore mentioned. You're a smart man but I will tell you greatly disappoint me with your lack of knowledge and being in the trenchous will try to deliver health care every day. SHAME on you and your advisors for moving forward with such a misguided venture. If you would look at the abuse within Medicare and take care of that it would save our economy billions of dollars. Find those people who know what is going on and let them loose on Medicare, insurances and drug companies.
With this I will close.....walk a day or two in my shoes and then let's talk!!!!!
Regards,

Notwithstanding its affinity for Mrs. Clinton, ACORN has even closer, more longstanding ties to Barack Obama. Thus on Feb. 21, 2008, the organization officially endorsed Obama for U.S. President. This endorsement came at the very height of Obama's hard-fought Democratic primary battle against Hillary Clinton. Welcoming the endorsement, Obama told an audience of ACORN workers and supporters: "I've been fighting alongside ACORN on issues that you care about my entire career."
Tracing ACORN's historical ties to Obama, columnist Mona Charen writes:
"ACORN attracted Barack Obama in his youthful community organizing days. Madeline Talbott [a Chicago activist who led the aforementioned ACORN effort to storm the Chicago City Council in July 1997] hired him to train her staff -- the very people who would later descend on Chicago's banks as CRA shakedown artists. [Obama] later funneled money to [ACORN] through the Woods Fund, on whose board he sat, and through the Chicago Annenberg Challenge, ditto. Obama was not just sympathetic -- he was an ACORN fellow traveler."
The New York Post reports the following about ACORN's links to Obama:
"Chicago ACORN sought out Obama's legal services for a 'motor voter' case and partnered with him on his 1992 'Project VOTE' registration drive. In those years, he also conducted leadership-training seminars for ACORN's up-and-coming organizers. That is, Obama was training the army of ACORN organizers who participated in Madeline Talbott's drive against Chicago's banks. More than that, Obama was funding them. As he rose to a leadership role at Chicago's Woods Fund, he became the most powerful voice on the foundation's board for supporting ACORN and other community organizers. In 1995, the Woods Fund substantially expanded its funding of community organizers -- and Obama chaired the committee that urged and managed the shift.
"The Woods Fund report makes it clear Obama was fully aware of the intimidation tactics used by ACORN's Madeline Talbott in her pioneering efforts to force banks to suspend their usual credit standards. Yet he supported Talbott in every conceivable way. He trained her personal staff and other aspiring ACORN leaders, he consulted with her extensively, and he arranged a major boost in foundation funding for her efforts.
"And, as the leader of another charity -- the Chicago Annenberg Challenge -- Obama channeled more funding Talbott's way, ostensibly for education projects but surely supportive of ACORN's overall efforts.
"In return, Talbott proudly announced her support of Obama's first campaign for state Senate [in 1996], saying, 'We accept and respect him as a kindred spirit, a fellow organizer.'"
In 2008 Obama's presidential campaign demonstrated its solidarity with ACORN by quietly giving one of the organization's front groups some $800,000 to fund a voter-registration drive on the Senator's behalf.
In November 2008 Matthew Vadum revealed how ACORN, after news of its implication in voter-fraud began to surface during Obama's 2008 presidential bid, tried to protect the Democratic candidate by covering up its own ties to him:
"In early October [2008], as media coverage of ACORN election fraud scandals intensified, ACORN removed a smoking gun from one of its websites. This was an article that linked Obama to ACORN and to Project Vote and made clear that the two entities were joined at the hip.
"The 2004 article was by Toni Foulkes, a Chicago-based member of the ACORN national board and now a Chicago alderman, and it appeared in Social Policy, a publication of ACORN's American Institute for Social Justice. Extolling Obama's political organizing abilities, Foulkes described the close connections between ACORN and its affiliate, Project Vote. She wrote that ACORN 'invited Obama to our leadership training sessions to run the session on power every year, and, as a result, many of our newly developing leaders got to know him before he ever ran for office.' So it was only 'natural for many of us to be active volunteers in his first campaign for State Senate and then his failed bid for U.S. Congress.' The upshot? 'By the time he ran for U.S. Senate, we were old friends.'" - Reply to this comment
- I don't know who is going to completely destroy this Country first, the illegal aliens or obama. Does obama have any idea how much could be saved on healthcare if he would ENFORCE the law and get rid of the illegal aiens.
Illegal aliens have made America the dumping ground for all their illegal alien children, then we have to school them and give them free medical care.

I for one, am sick and tired of these ILLEGAL ALIENS snubbing their nose at our immigration laws and the many other laws of this Country. If our Federal Government can not ENFORCE our immigration laws, and get these ILLEGAL ALIENS out of this Country, then let the States do it! One way or another, an end has to come to this illegal immigration, and not with AMNESTY! Amnesty will only encourage more ILLEGAL ALIENS to invade our Country and reward those who broke our laws and raped the American taxpayer in many ways...depressing our wages, taking our jobs, overwhelming our schools with their ILLEGAL ALIEN children, driving without a license or car insurance, all the crime from stolen identities to rape, drugs and everything else.
It's time for ZERO TOLERENCE with these ILLEGAL ALIENS. - Reply to this comment
- So far, its all been just a bunch of talk; its one thing to warn Wall Street and will be another issue to actually take action. I don't care about the health bill, if you want insurance, like everything else, you just go out and buy it, and I don't have a problem with capitalistic insurance companies. But the boost at Wall Street and a health bill take away free enterprise and are both a step backwards. So far, a bunch of talk and we still have kids dying overseas, here is a suggestion, raise the interest rates to around 14 percent and stop the gambling at the banks. At 14 percent, the banks would make enough to start business and get interest, what ever happened to that idea; consumption is not the key!
