Obama: No Higher Taxes With Health Reform

By
CBSNews
(CBS)  President Obama said that he did not promise too much in terms of health care legislation and continued to defend his plan during a Friday taping of "Face the Nation" at the White House.

The president told CBS News chief Washington correspondent Bob Schieffer that, in detailing his health care proposals, he is attempting to warn Americans that the federal budget cannot sustain the current system and "a lot of Americans are going to be much worse off over time."

Schieffer asked if the president could still keep his campaign promise that there would be no additional tax on people making less than $250,000 a year, no payroll tax and no capital gains.

"I can still keep that promise," Mr. Obama said, "because … about two thirds of what we've proposed would be from money that's already in the health care system and just being spent badly."

"This is not me making wild assertions," he continued.

President Obama did admit that "we are going to have to find some additional sources of revenue" to subsidize the other third of the cost. Insurance and drug companies are going to have to pony up, he explained.

Schieffer then asked how the additional cost to drug and insurance companies would not trickle down to Americans pocketbooks.

"They are passing on those costs to the consumer anyway," he responded. "The difference is that they're making huge profits on it, Bob."

By enforcing the rules and standards of care, the president said, he can assure Americans that they are getting "bang for their buck" in terms of medical treatment.

"Let me be honest," the president told Schieffer, "with a piece of legislation this complicated and a sector of the economy that's about one-sixth of our economy, there's a reason why for the last forty years people have been talking about this and it hasn't gotten done."

"It's hard," he admitted.

Attention: Independents / Democrats / Republicans

Check out what Obama and the Democrats want you to believe.

40 million new people insured + Zero new doctors = No higher taxes, not a dime increase in the deficit, and no rationing of healthcare....yeah right !

Something doesn't add up.....they are just lying

Look out Mr. Shieffer, Chris Wallace is all upset that President Obama didn't make it onto FoxNews Sunday....It's got to be a wild conspiracy....lol. It couldn't have anything to do with Mr. O'Reilly shoving one of Obama's aids during a campaign event in Manchester, NH during the primaries....or suggesting the President is a Muslim.....no!!

Excellent interview Me. Shieffer. Thank you.

Eurobob, that is EXACTLY why we need to remove profit for the drug and health insurance companies. The they CAN'T pass along the costs.

We will save vast amounts of money and get better care when we finally wise up and have universal single payer. There should be NO profit in health care. Period.

Why shouldn't health insurance companies make a profit, they are no different then Auto, Home or Liability insurance companies.....do you think everyone exists just to serve the all mightly liberal masses, where no profit is made and everyone is out of business......businesses, including insurance companies exist for one reason, to make profit....remember that lib

It is too expensive to stay on our present course of failed private corporations running everything including health care. We will actually SAVE vast amounts of money if we do Medicare for ALL.

When are we going to unite against the real enemy, the top 2% that are the corporate masters of the the GOP. We need to organize for boycotts and general strikes to bring the right wing fascists to their knees. We will take a little hit but in the long run we will avoid the concentrations camps and debtors prisons.

President Obama?s heath care promises won?t be kept. Costs will rise exponentially, NOT fall. Therefore, our taxes will be the ones to pay for it. We need to support the goal of covering all individuals through private health insurance. We are NOT prepared to turn our health system over to the government.

The private sector has FAILED US COMPLETELY. Just look around, it is unsustainable not to radically change the system.

Mr Obama must be either sick or just ill to lie repeatedly so.

Maybe Mr. Obama realizes Americans
are on to him as being a fraud and a phoney, a person never to be either believed or trusted.
