NATO Urges Linked US/Russia/NATO Defense

(AP)  The head of NATO called Friday for the U.S., Russia and NATO to link their missile defense systems against potential new nuclear threats from Asia and the Middle East, saying that the old foes must forget their lingering Cold War animosity.

Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen appealed for unity a day after the U.S. shelved a Bush-era plan for an Eastern European missile defense shield that has been a major irritant in relations with Russia.

"We should explore the potential for linking the U.S., NATO and Russia missile defense systems at an appropriate time," Fogh Rasmussen said.

"Both NATO and Russia have a wealth of experience in missile defense. We should now work to combine this experience to our mutual benefit," he added.

Russian envoy Dmitry Rogozin said the NATO chief's address had a "very positive tone ... cooperation with Russia is not a matter of choice [for NATO but] of necessity."

Fogh Rasmussen said in a speech calling for a rethink of NATO-Russia relations that long-range ballistic missile technology in the hands of such countries as North Korea and Iran threatens the West and Russia in large part because it could lead to regional proliferation.

"If North Korea stays nuclear, and if Iran becomes nuclear, some of their neighbors might feel compelled to follow their example," he said. "The proliferation of ballistic missile technology is of concern not just to NATO nations, but to Russia too."

Fogh Rasmussen said NATO and Moscow have failed to jointly take on global security threats including terrorism.

"When the Cold War ended 20 years ago, NATO and Russia developed rather unrealistic expectations about each other," he said. "Those flawed expectations ... continue to burden our relationship."

Fogh Rasmussen did not elaborate on how or to what extent the Russian, NATO and American anti-missile systems could be linked up.

The U.S. said the decision to abandon the Bush administration's plans came about because of a change in the U.S. perception of the threat posed by Iran. U.S. intelligence decided short- and medium-range missiles from Iran now pose a greater near-term threat than the intercontinental ballistic missiles the Bush plan addressed.

A new missile-defense plan would rely on a network of sensors and interceptor missiles based at sea, on land and in the air as a bulwark against Iranian short- and medium-range missiles.

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin on Friday praised Obama's decision and urged the U.S. to also cancel Cold War-era restrictions on trade with Russia.

Russian leaders had threatened to deploy short-range missiles to the Baltic exclave of Kaliningrad near Poland if the U.S. moved ahead with the missile defense plan.

On Friday, the Interfax news quoted an unnamed Russian military-diplomatic source as saying that such retaliatory measures would now be frozen and, possibly, fully canceled in response to Obama's decision to scrap the missile defense shield.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's foreign policy advisor Sergei Prikhodko told reporters Friday that Obama's move would require the Kremlin to "attentively consider new possibilities opening up for cooperation and interaction" with the U.S. But Prikhodko gave no hint on whether Russia could edge closer to the U.S. position on Iran.

A key irritant in NATO's relations with Moscow is the drive to bring ex-Soviet states and satellites into the alliance which now has 28 members. The membership prospects of Georgia and Ukraine especially have soured relations.

While proposing an unprecedented level of military cooperation with Moscow, Rasmussen said NATO will continue to admit new members if they are judged suited for membership.

Rogozin said Russia continues to object to NATO's claim to be Europe's premier security provider, saying the alliance must formally recognize the Collective Security Treaty Organization that Moscow created in 2002. Its members include Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

In the past, Russia has said it is ready to jointly work on missile defense with the NATO and the United States.

But it views Iran being far from obtaining a long-range missile technology and says it's necessary to jointly analyze missile threats from that country and other nations before taking any further action.

In 2007, Putin who was Russia's president at the time, offered the U.S. to use a Soviet-era radar in Azerbaijan as an alternative to the Bush administration's missile defense plan for Eastern Europe. The Bush administration said the facility couldn't replace the planned missile shield.

The NATO allies have done some technical work with the Russians on missile defense in the past. But this has slowed down in recent years as the relationship faded over NATO enlargement and the Georgian war. Fogh Rasmussen's speech is a bid to revive such joint work.

Turkey's military said Friday that it was planning to spend $1 billion (euro680 million) on four long-range missile defense systems but denied it was buying missile interceptors for use against Iran.

Well, without wanting to come across as a racist, both Russia & the West have a large common problem.................Militant Islam. It makes more sense to join with the Russians for all global issues be it Islamic expansion, China awakening, or E.T. visitation.

It was a wise decision. We are already spending too much on defense more than all the nations of the world combined. Good for you President Obama. It is about time we try to reap some of the dividends of a fallen Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War. Antagonizing Russia was a mistake bravo President Obama for having the courage to reverse a stupid decision.

President Barack Obama did not give away anything in making his decision to abandon the placement of an ineffective and costly missile defense system next to Russia's borders. Building this system would've been tantamount to Russia building such a system in Cuba and along the Mexican border. Of course, since the system itself is a total failure there would really be nothing to worry about, except for the fact that Russian troops would be so near our border. In making his decision, I'm sure President Obama and his advisers were well aware of the outpouring of ignorance that his decision would provoke from the far right. I'm very happy that we now have a President, who has the courage to stand up to those purveyors of ignorance and fear and who will make decisions based on common sense and reason. The majority of people in the Czech Republic and Poland didn't want this system on their soil. For different reasons, neither did I nor anyone else, who believes we waste far too much money on defense, while starving government programs designed to help the American people. Come 2010, I intend to work my butt off helping candidates, who support the President, to win congressional seats from conservative nut jobs, who with the former administration just about succeeded in destroying our country.

In an alarming article co-written by T. Christian Miller of ProPublica and Doug Smith of the Los Angeles Times, insurance companies responsible (under taxpayer-funded policies) for the treatment of civilian workers injured in Iraq and Afghanistan are reportedly routinely denying medical claims for basic care, as well as artificial limbs, psychological counseling and other services.

The same companies - primarily American International Group (AIG) - reaped hundreds of millions of dollars in profits from these insurance policies.

Folks,

Israel is nuclear with over 66 Nuclear Warheads. Why some nations can have it and others cannot?

The only reason Russia got Nuclear Missiles is because USA got Nuclear Missiles. Nuclear Deterrent takes care of the them not frying up each others.

The only reason Iran wants Nuclear Missiles is because Israel already got Nuclear Missiles. Why would Nuclear Deterrent not work between Israel and it's Arab neighbors?

The CEO's in this country are selling everything they can to foreign governments. The USA is the 1st or 2nd largest manufacturer and seller of military arms and hardware to anyone with money. The CEO of AIG is as we speak ripping off the civilian contractors working for the defense contractors in the 2 or 3 war zones we are currently involved in by gouging the Pentagon for workman's comp and insurance benefits pricing and then trying not to pay the workers for injury benefits (Insurance) and disability. All for extra profits and bonuses. Early this year it was reported the independent contractors were trying to get VA to take them because AIG was denying payments. They are the people that caused the derivative meltdown that has cost everyone money and hardship. The derivatives are still in the background and haven't gone away have they. Where are we any different than the Soviets?

Well, yeah, we are all still upset about Bush, sure....

[Insert satire]
"As long as he talks smart and able to speak in complete sentences, he has my vote"

How many people placed their vote based on that alone? Pathetic.

Yep, if Bush were never president, I don't believe Obama would be either. But, that doesn't take away the fact of, "dummied down" in my previous post.

Wow, Russia sells Iran nuclear technology, and the USA is going to reward them with missile shield technology.

This is what happens when you have a nation that cares about their phone more than they care about politics. and video games, and TV, and movies, and sports, and booze, and drugs, and porn... too dummied down to elect a competent president. Too stupid to read books about history, instead takes political spin on website forums at face value.

A president that lived and breathed, and was surrounded by people all his life, who hate America, therefor he hates America.

This man needs to go, and hopefully sooner than 2012. If you want to call me a racist for me making a point, then I'll be your racist.
