Student Fells Intruder with Samurai Sword

(AP)  Baltimore police say a Johns Hopkins University undergraduate student armed with a samurai sword killed an intruder he discovered in his garage.

Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi says campus security and an off-duty city officer responding to a call for a suspicious person heard screams to call police around 1:20 a.m. Tuesday in the 300 block of University Parkway.

Guglielmi says the student told a man he found inside his garage to leave and the man accosted him. That's when Guglielmi says the student defended himself, cutting off the man's hand and causing a severe laceration to his upper body.

He says the man died on the scene, but police are not yet releasing his name.

Police are interviewing the student and his three roommates and are talking to prosecutors about whether to file charges.

NOTE TO SELF: Start wearing armor when I feel the need to break into someone's home.

I have to side with the student. I am a 38 years old disabled vet from the first Persian Gulf and I would hate to be the one who decides to take the chance in breaking into my home. Above my bed is a wall of weapons in which I have 2 five foot long broadswords, 3 maces, a short sword, as well a couple of real mean axes. I know that most deaths that occur in the home are related to handguns and I dont want to accidently shoot myself or anyone else, but come in my home and your dead no two ways about it I will not hesitate in the least I have no qualms in chopping your head right off your stinking shoulders or running someone through. I have my wall-o-weapons for a reason, to defend myself fully I know that if anyone were to look closely at me I make an easy target maybe even a pushover but not in my home I wont even blink the only good eye I have left. The only question I would have is who to call to clean up afterwards. My weapons are my pride and joy, but yet they are still very practical and very sharp and I know I have knicked myself enough times in learning how to use all them well. I hope noone ever decides to make that choice because my choice is already clear, defend yourselves at all costs and never let anyone tell you that you cant. To those who say ask questions first I have a slogan for you if I feel threatened by someone in my property I am killing them let the cops figure it out. IT IS MY PROPERTY FOR A REASON THE ONLY ONES WHO SHOULD BE THERE ARE WHO I SAY AND IF THERE IS SOMEONE IN MY GARAGE ANND I DONT KNOW ABOUT IT THEN IT IS SETTELED INTRUDER AND THERE NO REASON TO LET THEM GO OR EVEN TRY TO HOLD THEM FOR THE COPS JUST SO THEY CAN MAKE BAIL AND COME BACK AND FINISH WHAT THEY CAME TO DO IN THE FIRST PLACE BUT THIS TIME THEY ARE GOING TO MAKE SURE I JUST HOLD THEM NEVER BRING A KNIFE TO A GUNFIGHT BUT IF HE WAS ALREADY THERE THEN HEOR SHE ALREADY KNOWS TO KILL ME FIRST AND THAT IS UNACCEPTABLE TO ME I made it through the first persian gulf conflict with injuries and am not gonna let anyone harm me or my person ever again

In Oklahoma we have the "make my day" law. When someone breaks in your home and you feel that your life is threatened, you have the right to defend yourself and even kill that person without being prosecuted. That's the way it should be in the whole country. I hope this man is not prosecuted. He had a right to defend himself! P.S. If someone breaks in on me they'll get same treatment! I don't own a machete but I do own a very large knife that my grandfather made that has a blade that's nearly two feet long. It is razor sharp and will easily take off an arm or even a leg. Anyone who breaks in on me will find that out the hard way!

The police no longer tell you to cooperate, you are more likely to survive if you act. If someone breaks into your home while you are likely to be at home they are likely prepared to kill you.

This intruder was released from PRISON days before he broken into this home. I doubt the student had anything personally against him.

The college kid get the benefit of my doubt before the recently-released-from-prison-intruder.

Criminals better watch out.
A lot of us prefer shotguns over swords.
You have been warned!

Press stories start off with a snippet of truth - let's see how many of the "Rush to Judgement" crowd have the cahones to apologize later for shooting off their mouths without first loading their brains.

I heard of a similar case where the "intruder" was in fact the previous tenant, whose stuff had been trashed by the landlord.

"Shoot first and ask questions afterward" leads to the penitentiary at home, and tarnishes your country's reputation abroad.

Bring on "the rest of the story"!

This kid is a HERO!!! And, thank God he and his fellow roommates are still alive. We already lost a Yale Student and University of California Irvine student this week on their respective campus.'

He should be given a Medal of Honor for bravery. The city of Baltimore should pay for the rest of his college education in exchange for the amount of money he saved them from this career criminal.

I would say that justice has been served and any police tampering would just undo a right action.

Let the incident and the message stand.

Of course the student had the right to defend himself. The police, however, are obligated to investigate whether that was, indeed, the situation. 'Nuff said and case closed.
